Not as good as it used to be

This establishment was an old family favourite and I remember going as a child and getting the beautiful wheaten bread and scones and so on. It has changed a lot. Service was friendly but slow and got our older mixed up. Chicken was very dry. Scampi was beautifully cooked. Were hoping to have... read more

Every time I'm in Newcastle this is where I go for ice cream. I much prefer it to Mauds which is more commercialized.

The Strand was a pleasant surprise - it's a bit pokey and not very well presented but the food was relatively cheap and was tasty. The dining area gives the impression that it's just going to be a bit tacky and not great but when the food did arrive (the waitresses managed to mix up our food and another table's),... More

Popped into the strand with my wife on a Sunday summer afternoon for a cup of tea and a wee bun. The young waitress who served us was very pleasant and polite. The service was good and the building had still got a homely feel despite being given a bit of a facelift. My wife asked for a small tub... More

Had a wonderful and reasonably priced lunch here today. The menu has a wide selection for 5 pounds and the dessert was heavenly. The dessert came with a choice of fresh cream or ice cream - choose the ice cream. It is homemade and absolutely delicious.

My husband and I decided to pay The Strand a visit. We had been at The Strand a few times before and enjoyed the old fashioned atmosphere and food, especially as the food was served with free tea, bread and butter. We noticed on this visit it had had a bit of a face lift which was good, therefore, we... More

Recently bough an ice cream here and asked for a small cone, I was rather disappointed to receive one small thimble of ice cream on top of a cone, I should have complained at the time but didn't The ice cream is as good as ever but really terrible portions.

While visiting Newcastle Co Down for the recent Irish Open Golf Tournament, we dropped into this lovely restaurant for breakfast. A friendly waitress took our order within a few minutes and even though there was 5 of us our breakfast was served promptly. There was a decent choice on the menu and when we got our breakfast it was a... More

if you are looking for the best breakfast in Ireland - the Strand offers one of the most hearty and generous meals we have had on our tour. Judging by the crowds and the friendly and prompt customer service, this a obviously popular place. As visitors from Australia, we are no strangers to quality ice cream. We would have to... More

We have been here many many times and always returned because we loved it! But yesterday my opinion changed, we went in and sat down as usual at the front seating area and one of the staff walked passes I called to her for a high chair and she just glared at me as if I had spoken anything but...
