Nice but a bit 'twee'

I agonised between giving three or four stars and decided to be generous as we had a very pleasant day out in a lovely setting. Going into the restaurant felt like intruding into someone's house. There were two doors off the entrance hall, there may have been a sign which we missed, but we... read more

On visiting 1861 for Lunch today I must say that I had one of the best restaurant experience I have ever had. I use the word 'experience' as from the moment we stepped through the door into the Chic Lounge, we were greeted by the female Owner and made to feel most welcome. On being handed drinks and nibbles of... More

Although we did find it tricky to book because we had a voucher that could only be used on certain times and days , we was pleasantly surprised.. Food is out of this world , with very nice little touches eg olives on arrival , amuse Bouche .. Everything I tasted was full of flavour and presented beautifully . If... More

Started with a pleasant drive out into the fabulous Monmouthshire countryside from Mardy. From the moment we arrived the welcome and service could not be faulted. Our choices of lamb and guinea fowl were delicious. My dessert choice offered a superb range of various cheeses which could only have been improved if I was given a small card explaining the... We visited 1861 for Sunday lunch and were blown away by the food. I am a vegetarian and had the unique experience of being given a 2 page menu listing vegetarian dishes. The choice was amazing. I started with the broccoli soup with stilton mousse and had goats cheese gnocchi for my main course. My companions had roast lamb (perfectly... More

We ate at 1861 to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we were not disappointed. Chef Simon has an exquisite touch and delivers great flavours presented beautifully. Local and seasonal produce is used wherever possible, which I like. Kate is a great host at front of house. She is very attentive and her attention to detail is first class. We were... More

I am surprised by the most recent reviews for this restaurant. My husband and I thought that the food was superb, service excellent and all staff were polite and welcoming. The attention to detail was impressive and I can honestly comment that this is one of the nicest meals that I have had for a long time. The food is... More

We visited for lunch on Thursday, restaurant was busy which we thought was a good sign. We had a voucher which we had bought to treat my parents which included a main meal and glass of prosecco. We were served this in the lounge with olives and cashews which was a nice touch, however the attitude of the female owner... More

The food was OK, nothing special, cost a lot! I was very disappointed we went as birthday treat. The staff were very pleasant. I would never choose to go again, much nicer places around here.
