Only OK

The food was OK, nothing special, cost a lot! I was very disappointed we went as birthday treat. The staff were very pleasant. I would never choose to go again, much nicer places around here.

Visited on a Thurday eve with a travelzoo voycher, table booked for 7pm at 6:55 restaurant in darkness, not a good start, lights finally came and we were greeted with a not to warm reception. were shown into the lounge and given a glass of prosseco, olives and cashews, we made our selection from the menu and were shown to... Drove up for the weekend and had a lunch time meal with a voucher, very friendly welcome no snobbery here and a very pleasant seating area. Cannot fault the food my taste buds were truly entertained and the staff are amazing. Compliments to the chef as every thing was cooked to perfection and my wife who had doubts before going... More

We had dinner this week part paid for by a voucher. First of all the service was excellent, the atmosphere was cosy and warm, and the food was tasty and presented well. We were somewhat disappointed with the cost of the dinner for what we had, however. The food was very nice but very much over priced for its 'volume'.... More

Had a voucher which part paid for a mid week evening meal meal. Bit of a drive from Cardiff but well worth the effort. Very difficult to find any fault. Service was friendly and good standard. Food was excellent with some nice touches. Reasonable choice of affordable wines. Nice and warm ambiance. Overall excellent experience and will return.

My wife and I decided to try this restaurant which is in an area where there are several quality and popular establishments. We decided to go Saturday lunch time which we had to book. Three course menu is £25.00 per head and although not a lot of choice it was all perfectly cooked. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal... More

Visited the 1861 this evening. We were very lucky because a friend had found a discount offer so we actually paid approximately one-third of the actual cost of the meal! However, had we paid the full price we would not have complained. The food was excellent, interesting, tasty and perfectly cooked and presented. The service could not have been improved,... More

With a choice of the Hardwick , Walnut Tree or the 1861 Restaurant, I would always go for the 1861 Restaurant. Excellent Pub food, sensibly priced and good service with a talented chef who is very amenable to any special request.

First visit to 1861 and a real treat. A good menu and a nice wine list including wines by the glass. With a number of fine restaurants within a ten mile radius, 1861 holds its own very nicely.

Again a very enjoyable evening, 2nd visit. Food was good. Service & attention to detail was superb even down to little touches for my partners birthday. Would have liked to see the fire lit in the dining room to add a little warmth to the dining room on a december evening.
