We visited the 1861 restaurant as a reunion celebration. Six of us attended and had an excellent meal. The staff were very attentive and created a very enjoyable and memorable occasion.

My wife and I had a mid week lunch and as I'd expect the place was rather quiet but hence the lower marking for atmosphere. Living in the area we have often passed but were put off because of the appearance of the building however as the Scots say yer canna judge a sausage by its skin. we were warmly... More

When one looks at a foraging menu, one cannot help but feel one is taking a risk - but for us it was a risk well worth taking. Delightful venue, capable of being intimate as well as coping with a larger party. Despite being busy, we were welcomed and not made to feel rushed. Calm assurance surrounded us and delicious... The welcome was warm and friendly, and we were very happy with the choices available to us on the menu. Delicious seasonal food, made with care and beautifully presented. Our waitress was very friendly and pleasant. My only criticism would be the atmosphere and decor. It felt like an old country pub which had been given a coat of paint,... More

Location excellent, welcome excellent, lounge and restaurant excellent, service and presentation outstanding. They really make you feel like an important diner and the staff are very knowledgble and well trained, little surprises between courses. Food was well cooked and beautifully presented. I was a little dissapointed with the size of portions and the cost, but my three guests were delighted... More

I absolutely HATE to leave a bad review of any business, particularly as the lady who owns it is so pleasant. We are food lovers and frequently dine in Monmouthshires delights. I had fancied this place for a while but the drive out from Abergavenny had previously put us off. When we went we took our two young daughters and... More

We visited this restaurant on 30th September with our tastecard. It was a 15 mile journey from our hotel and well worth the trip. The service was excellent and the food presented well and very tasty. We both had the scallops to start, these very nice but the portion was somewhat small for the price we had to pay. The... More

We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch. Rob from White Castle Vineyards recommended we visit 1861 during our vineyard tour. He recommendation was well deserved. We enjoyed Sunday Roast with starters and the great atmosphere. We particularly liked the zucchini (courgette) tempura starter. The staff was very nice and the setting is charming.

Just come back from a lovely Saturday lunch at 1861. Went with group of four. The service and food was excellent. Can't understand the previous review as the waitress was charming and could not fault the food. The only problem is it is in the middle of nowhere!!! However it is well worth the journey. We even stopped of at... More

Went here for an anniversary meal and we were really disappointed. The food is over-priced for what is served, lack of vegetarian options, service is poor and made to feel like an inconvenience being there. Atmosphere is nice within the restaurant itself but overall not a great experience
