A pleasure, again!

Yet another great evening at 1861. Celebrating with friends, we had the foraging menu and there was even a version for me, the awkward veggie! The flavours of the hedgerow plants were amazing and the elderflower sorbet was the stuff of heaven! The food, as usual, was astonishingly good, the... read more

Skimming over the other reviews for 1861 they seem to be either amazed at the quality, or disgruntled over high prices and snobbishness. But all those reviewers had sought out the restaurant and had come some way to find it. We just happened to be driving past, feeling hungry, and saw this isolated pub-ish looking building on the B4521. We... More

Had a family meal here last night and it was absolutely brilliant. We had the six course spring foraging menu plus extra cheese course and every single course was original and delicious, so much care and loving attention had gone into its creation, we're still talking about it today. Thank you to Simon and family for making our celebratory meal... More

I've visited 1861 a number of times, and always been impressed by the reliably good food, the attention to detail and atmosphere. Lots of nice touches like ordering in a welcoming room outside the dining room, the amuse-bouche and pre-desert, and the array of homemade sweets with coffee show the owners really care about the food they are offering. Everything... More

We booked this restaurant for a family meal to celebrate my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary - a very special occasion, which was made clear during the booking process. We were a party of 14. Half were children, half of the group had come from North Yorkshire. We were dismayed upon arrival to find that we had been seated on 2... More

We booked this restaurant using a voucher through Travelzoo and went with an open mind; we were not disappointed, in fact it was delightful and far exceeded our expectations. The experience started with a warm and friendly greeting by the owner and was followed by superb organisation, close attention to detail and excellent food and presentation. The atmosphere was homely... More

Very peculiar atmosphere in this place. The food was fine but certain aspects of the service were rather comical. Our waitress was very good but the female owner is priceless. Imagine Mrs Bucket, sorry Bouquet, in her earlier years and you get the picture. Our group were in suppressed giggles from the moment we arrived. Our drinks order was frostily... More

I'd been hoping to come to 1861 for a long time. We came mid week and used our taste card, which made the meal incredible value for money. Despite me getting our booking time wrong, we felt totally looked after from start to finish. The scallop was perfect. Our palate cleanser of a cucumber and mint jelly was amazing -... More

Recommended to us by many, including the writer and foody, Simon Wright we were excited to take our elderly ( though v spiritedly and exceedingly on the ball) step mum and sister. This was a lovely experience. The food is ample. The ingredients local. The service spot on but not over-done. The recommended wine v good value and the desserts... More
