Welcoming atmosphere and superb food

We are lucky enough to have some truly wonderful restaurants in the Abergavenny area but 1861 is definitely our favourite. We went again last night and the food was wonderful. I have read previous reviews that said negative things about the food but I can honestly say I have never had anything but excellent food, wine, service and atmosphere. It... More

Jolly might sound like a strange opening gambit for a restaurant review but that is how it made us feel on a cold, damp Friday night after a long week at work. Yes, it is a little like sitting in someone's front room; yes the decor is a little odd; yes the food is a little hit and miss but... More

We were given a voucher for this restaurant as a Christmas present and decided to use it for lunch at the end of a very wet January. After booking a table the previous day, we arrived to be greeted by a very helpful and friendly lady who took our coats and gave us some drinks and nibbles while we looked... More

1861 is in a very imposing building, but, in a reverse of the TARDIS, it seems much smaller on the inside. The decor is confusing too - modern sofas and flatware against a backdrop of white walls, black beams, and twee knickknacks. (It needs the attention of a restaurant consultant or an interior designer, who'd soon put things right.) Service... More

My wife and I had a lovely meal here recently and can't wait to go back ! The food was outstanding and very generous on size :-) nothing was rushed either. Lovely little setting nestled in the hills

We had such a fantastic evening here. Service and attention to detail was spot on. Food INCREDIBLE, we had the Menu Prestige (taster menu- a must for adventurous eaters!) which did not disappoint! Love how rural and intimate the setting is. As you arrive, you are seated in a lovely seating area to relax with a drink whilst your table... More

An 80th birthday lunch for my husband which was made special by decorations on the table plus the traditional lit candle. Excellent food and service. Locally produced vegetables were appreciated as was the attention given to cooking them to suit my husband's dietary needs The friendly and homely atmosphere enhanced the quality of the whole experience. It was just as... More

What can I say, it's an hour drive away but we just keep returning to the 1861. Seared scallops is my wife's choice of starter, The smoked and confit duck is mine. Would recommend all of the mains and the platter of mini deserts or the cheeses finishes the meal nicely. We've had the tasting menu twice and matched wines... More

This has become one of our favourite restaurants within half an hour from home. We had a celebration lunch for our wedding anniversary in April and this month we took another couple as birthday gifts. The whole experience was delightful from beginning to end. We had vouchers for main meals and a glass of prosecco at £25 for a couple... More
