Exceeded Expectations

My partner and I ate here recently on a Saturday afternoon with a living social voucher. I must admit when we parked across from 1861 in their car park I wasn't sure about it as it doesn't look overly inviting (this is just my opinion). However, on entering I was pleasantly surprised ... I was recommended this restaurant by an old and trusted friend and I was not disappointed. Whilst visiting the area with a friend for a long weekend, we decided to dine at 1861 one evening and enjoyed a delicious dinner served by a delightful waitress. The menu choice was excellent and the food was very good. Lovely atmosphere and beautiful... More

Friendly, wonderful welcome by owner and waitress no swearing when tray of glasses inadvertently dropped and food to break the diet for and not regret an ounce!

We head many good comments about 1861 and went for Sunday lunch. We hesitate to go out on Sundays as very often the quality of the lunch seem to be of a lower standard. Not at 1861! You could not fault it: from the warm welcome, the professionnal serving and the exquisite food. The Chef has certainly a great future... More

I booked a table at this restaurant to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary. I had heard many good things about the 1861 restaurant and decided it was time to go there. Upon arrival my wife and I were surprised to find we were the only customers. It was actually a Wednesday night so we were not overly concerned. We were... More

We were lucky enough to book a table for lunch the day before. We had not been before and it took a little finding. This family run restaurant is not large but is immaculate. Front of house is efficiently and knowledgebly managed by the wife of the Chef. The waiting staff are attentive and take time to explain each dish.... More

We live in the New Forest, so sadly only get to eat at 1861 when visiting family in Abergavenny. Lunch last week was predictably good, the whole experience of ambience, front of house, wonderfully cooked and presented food and attentive service, it's just all right. I haven't found a restaurant for years to which I can take anyone, safe in... More

I only write a review after a specific visit but, for those of you that haven't experienced Simon's creativity and Kate's hospitality, there are a number of opening comments. This is the only restaurant I go to where on mentioning that one of a party of four would be vegetarian, a complete a la carte vegetarian menu was produced so... More

Decided on somewhere indulgent and 1861 sprung to mind. Did'nt book just dropped in and luckily had a table. The welcome os great, seated quickly and along with menu had olives and cashews to nibble on as we considered the menu. Whilst we were in the recption area (ante room??) a couple arrived whom I must admit didn't receive the... More

My wife and I booked a table at 1861 to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was a mid week booking so expected it to be quiet and arrived to find we were the only customers. If you are looking for high quality cuisine then this is the place for you. Set on a lovely countryside main road we were given... More
