Not as we remembered, it was better!

We first came here 40 years ago when the Italian owner was so welcoming as we arrived very late one lunchtime and enquired if we could have lunch after a traumatic encounter with a traffic policeman. Years later we saw on TV that they had got a Michelin star and were not surprised. This time we... read more

We were visiting the area in late May and booked in advance to eat for lunch. Their own website has a reservation system. This is fine dining with minimum competition in the region and advance reservation is necessary for both lunch and dinner. It was midweek at lunch and, using an American expression, the age profile of the guests was... More

We try to eat here at least once a year and our visit in July did not disappoint. We ate midweek from the set menu which was excellent value for £30 for three courses. Delicious terrine with green herbs, following by a generous portion of tasty lamb shanks and we finished with a refreshing summer pudding. There are very good... More

Our arrival for lunch was disappointing. The lady on reception was gloomy to say the least, instead of a smile & a welcoming greeting, she just said "yes". It was the same when we left no "thanks for coming" etc. Just the bill and turn Her back on us. However the waitresses were charming & very helpful. I must say... More

Booked as an Anniversary treat duck parfait to start was lovely the rack of lamb was just decent but if I had paid what I had wanted then around £70-£75 not £114.00 it was decent food but I feel a little pricey for what is was. Friendly staff beautiful location.

We try and make an annual pilgrimage to eat Shaun's food and this year was no exception. My wife had two starters, the turbot and the confit of quail, I had the Kerala fish curry and the kidneys all washed down with a carafe of rosé. All superb and the portions were sized just right. One can be concerned about... More

I agree with some of the comments below. We came for a Saturday lunch and while everything was good (pate & soufflé to start, cod and pork for main and floating islands for pud.) nothing was great. I think the food lacked the inventiveness and creativity to warrant a Michelin star. Can’t help feeling that the people from Michelin are... More

A serendipitous find... a wonderful restaurant with some amazingly good food. A little expensive (especially the drinks) but well worth it.

We were returning to the Walnut after many years. We travelled for about 90 mins to reach this restaurant and were not disappointed. We started with soufflé and kerela fish curry followed by halibut and squab pigeon and then fig tart. The whole meal was fabulous. Dishes were perfect - just the right quantity of food, perfect ingredients and everything... More

We went a bit out of our way to eat here, and were not exactly disappointed, but not overly excited either. The food was good, as expected given the Michelin star, but not amazing. The service was definitely not up to Michelin standards. When asking about a glass of wine for a starter with fish, the waiter replied that she... More
