Peaceful lunchtime

What a lovely place. I was just passing this bistro and decided to step in after seeing their menu. I am glad I did. Professional and pleasant staff and a relaxed, rustic atmosphere. I didn't have a drink but the selection looked impressive. Not cheap but not breaking the bank either. I will have... read more

The specials here are frequently changing and each one is just as brilliant as the last, good drinks selection too. Professional, friendly staff combined with a very comfortable atmosphere makes this a great spot for lunch or dinner. Ideally you want to be having a meal or a drink here before going downstairs to the comedy club.

My in-laws and I have just had a lovely 2 course evening meal at The Stand. There was about 10 main courses to choose from; monkfish keralan curry, fish (hake) and chips, burger, vegetable pie, lamb & couscous. I had the fish and chips, it was fresh, lightly battered, and a minty pea purée...possibly the nicest fish and chips I've... More

I had tickets to a show at the comedy club downstairs, and being unfamiliar with this end of town, opted to eat at the bistro. Reservation made over the phone was fine, table waiting for my arrival. Simple steak and chips was delicious and served as was requested. Good food, great value and served with a smile. My server (didn't... More

Back in the day when I was in my 30s and working and living in Newcastle, High Bridge Street used to be a device to get one through to Grey Street from the Bigg Market and back again. It was puctuated with a couple of lively bars and very posh boutiques, one of them is now called The Stand and... More

We had about 90 minutes after the matinee at the Theatre Royal before a lecture so walked to the Stand around the corner. We both had mushrooms on ciabatta toast as a starter which was delicious. I followed with a beef burrito which was really spicy & tasty. Hubby had gammon which was presented beautifully in large "nuggets" with a... More

Thought we'd give this a go and enjoy a night downstairs in the comedy club; so pleased we did! The 3-course for £20 is excellent value in any major city on a Saturday night, we've been to London this week and paid twice the price and been disappointed with the quality. We weren't disappointed here. My wife had the King... More

Food was okay, ordered a medium rare steak which when came was much closer to rare. When it came to pay the bill we all payed separately, and when then told we still had £13 to pay but couldn't tell us what for and as we had all pay for what we got we refused to pay, were then forced... More

Fantastic food to start off and amazing night, it was incredibly cheap, the food was of a high standard and I more more than satisfied. One small room for improvement, I did order olives and they still had the stones in. it wasn't made obvious until I nearly cracked a tooth on it.

This hidden gem never fails to deliver top-quality, beautifully-presented, yet really reasonably priced food with such consistency. Whether we're grabbing a quick bite from the daytime cafe menu or treating ourselves to a couple of courses from the bistro menu later in the day, every time we've been to this fabulous bistro we've always left with big smiles and a...
