Sunday lunch with the family

very quaint English pub. Low beams and open fires. Lots of character. There was 10 of us for lunch. Age range of 7years to 75 years. We all had the roast. I had beef. There was 3 slices of medium cooked beef. It was served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower... read more

4 of us stopped off at this lovely little pub during a circular walk around Guildford. You instantly feel welcome when you walk through the door and the roaring fire was enticing. We never ate on this occasion and just had some drinks, crisps, and nuts. It's a place I could easily spend all Sunday afternoon lazing in. The food... More

This place is stuck in the 80s, with its crocheted doilies, steak Diane and over-cooked veg. Its prices are the one thing that are right up-to-date, though. It does have some charm (the building is pretty), but I found the service overbearing and was disappointed to see it's taken the route of adding a 'discretionary' service charge to the bill.... I genuinely cannot fathom why this pub receives positive reviews. Other than the fact that the unpleasant pub landlord/manager treats the customers as if they've invaded his hobbit hole and stolen all his cheese, the screamingly overpriced food is below average. The menu, all English fare, but written in French for poshness, seems to do the job of attracting some... More

Met old friends for Sunday lunch. Great value, very tasty house red, humorous service with old fashioned professionalism rarely seen nowadays, just fab all round!

We visited the Withies after Christmas after a gap of nearly a year, and although I was sad to see some of the staff, including Pepe (who had been there for ever) have retired. The food is still as good as ever, the best crab salad anywhere, selection of fish (I like the sole) tender, well hung steaks, game in... More

We came back to The Withies after almost ten years. It had gone down hill from the time we visited regularly in the 8o's and 90's. The service was terrible ; we had to ask for napkins, we had to ask for a wine list when our main course arrived. The starters were very good (Scallops for me and crab... More

We have been here many times and as always The Withies is fabulous. The Suckling Pig alone is worth the visit. Truly delicious. Pate and Whitebait to start with followed by the Suckling Pig (of course) and a whole Dover Sole served on the bone. Washed down with a bottle of Puligny Montrachet. Perfect. Service was spot on. Seriously good.... More

We have been going to the Withies for many years, and nothing has changed! It's still the quaint lovely building with a great atmosphere. The food, the menu and everything else has stood still, except the price! Our beef stroganoff tasted good, but was plonked on a plate with no finesse. The service was mediocre, and some of the staff... More

We had guests from Sri Lanka and they wanted to experience an old British style pub/ restaurant. This is perfect as there is a good selection of real ales (not really to our guest tastes but they tried it none the less) and the design of the place is as it was hundreds of years ago. Great real fire was... More
