Good 2 hour walk in great countryside then great pub lunch.

Our Probus club monthly walk was well attended for this one because of the beautiful countryside walk around Abinger Hammer and Common. What was a real bonus was the friendly welcome from the landlord and his wife when we arrived to pre-order lunch. A tired and hungry 24 walkers were then... read more

The pub is inviting. There is nothing really special about it, you enjoy being there. They have a garden outside with a view on the hills, and a few scattered tables. The tables are spread out, so you have privacy. The food ... is pub food, just good, nothing spectacular about it. The beer is also OK. Bottomline, a good... More

Nice pub and you get a warm welcome here and good service. Food very good especially the steak and kidney pudding, Nachos to share and all the puddings. Has great views from the garden which is well kept. Wide selection of wine that you can order by the glass.

It had been a number of years since I last ate here, partly because I didn't like the attitude of the previous owners - this was a common complaint. There is none of that here now. I had supper there with my brother and we were both charmed by the jovial spirit that existed behind the bar, and by the... More

Although unusual for us, because pub Sunday lunches always end up with overdone meat to keep the grey pound happy, we went to the Volunteer for Sunday lunch. We liked how it looked, liked the fact it was off the beaten track, and service was pleasant and efficient. Good menu, good selection of beers. However, the meat was overdone. And... More

I've visited the volunteer on and off for 10 years or so. Had one bad meal from previous crew, otherwise all good. Dog and child friendly, good honest pub food (they make their burgers from rump steak mince!), good service and the owners actually give a damn :-)

I was taken here by a friend for lunch last Sunday, as he wanted a Hall & Woodhouse Pub in a lovely setting, to show me the beauty of the Surrey Hills. What an absolute gem this place is! A truly beautiful setting, nestled in the quaint village of Sutton Abinger, near Dorking. The wonderful Georgian Building looks out over... More

On arrival, this pub seems to have it all. A beautiful old building with fantastic views and a pretty, spacious garden behind. The menu looked inviting and the beer (despite three pumps being off) was pleasant. However, to my mind, staff drive any business and when you have the two (seemingly more senior?) staff members sitting on the benches at... More

We always enjoy eating here. There are lovely outdoor tables in the evening sunshine watching the sun set, rabbits leaping about in the fields opposite, and horses strolling over the hill in the horizon. The views are stunning. The food is served fast, and isn't hugely imaginative, but it's beautifully cooked and presented. It would be good if the menu... More
