Visited this restaurant on an extremely hot day for Sunday dinner. Unfortunately, with no air con we all suffered from the heat so making our visit very uncomfortable. The price of the 2 or 3 course menu was very good. But have to admit that I found the food to be average. Everything was just ok, nothing to rave about.... More

Delicious food, excellent cheery service, and phenomenal value. Portion sizes for my food was perhaps 10% smaller than normal, but then my wife's pâté and fish broth were more than she could manage. Service was exemplary, dealing with a slightly troublesome table behind us swiftly and sensitively. I had the hot smoked salmon, hake and cheese board, all of which... More

We went to this restaurant for lunch after we had seen it on tripadvisor and were not disappointed. The food was excellent for the price and we had a nice bottle of wine to go with it. The staff were all nice and friendly and we would certainly go again if we were in the area.

Chose this restaurant on the strength of its reviews here and we're sadly disappointed. Poorly laid out restaurant with lacklustre local talent only there for the wage. There was absolutely no atmosphere at all and the food was poor. Not worth the cost.

Sunday Lunch at the 1709 Bistro We visited again in July with friends for a Sunday lunch and we all had a wonderful time. Homemade tomato and basil soup, stuffed vine tomato, coriander and pine nut couscous with dressing, followed by chicken with spicy Thai sauce, handcut chips, Sunday beef and roast fillet of haddock with new potatoes, spinach in... Thought we would try this restaurant for lunch but won't be returning. The Shredded pork salad with candied walnuts was in edible........the crackling was sharp and the candied walnuts difficult to bite without breaking your teeth and impossible to eat with cutlery. The treacle tart for dessert had a hard crusty top with a thick pastry case and a chewy... More

This is a quirky restaurant with staff who make you feel welcome. The lunch time menu is great value for money with two courses only costing £6.90. There are vegetarian and gluten free choices so something for everyone.
