An oasis of calm

Really enjoyed this place: excellent food - one of the best burgers I've ever had; and very good beer (Shropshire Lad). The service was relaxed and friendly as well as efficient. First visit for six of us, we were all very impressed, nice atmosphere, good service, extensive wine list, outstanding food! This is local fine dining, do not expect large portions, but beautifully presented food, bursting with flavours.

We stayed self catering in the stables which is adjacent to the hotel. We found it extremely overpriced and tatty, has not been kept to a high standard. The location is very central which is probably the only plus i would give it. Not the best staff in the world,on our departure we were not asked if we enjoyed our stay or any... More

You can see this restaurant is aiming high. We ate here as a party of 10 and had pre ordered from a set menu. The setting is very atmospheric and has a great ambience. The staff are immaculate and everything appears spotless. The starters were excellent. When the main courses came about 5 people in our party had ordered steak,... More

Sunday lunch for wildly relatives birthday. First problem, there seem to be no disabled access and one of our party was slightly disabled. There ensued a struggle to enable this person to get up the stairs to our table. Service was terribly slow and poor all the way though. Caesar salad for starters was fair. A fish course of cod... Great service, food just average for the price. Fatty Pork and 2 pieces of broccoli was the only vegetable expect for mash the size of a teaspoon. I appreciate they are trying to create fine dining but this was taking it to a whole new level. We actually picked up a pizza on the way home. Why not present the... More

The staff were really very accommodating and friendly, the wine list was comprehensive and drinkable. the upstairs restaurant and ambiance excellent. however the food was not what I expected, my starter of Belly Pork was very good, however my main course The Lamb Tasting plate 20 quid was as described no more than a taste, I went home for dinner... Loved the ambiance staff friendly and service excellent. Starter very disappointing. Two tiny bits of 'langoustine' in very fatty tasting breadcrumbs that had the appearance of small scampi. So much breadcrumb that didn't even see fish let alone taste it. It was described as 'crispy langoustine' The snow crab mayo good though. If you like cucumber this is the dish... More

We arrived quite early and were more or less the only dinners while we were there, a private party seems to have limited the bookings . A well priced option of 2 courses for £16 and a carafe of wine for £10. My pork roast was pretty good, a bit more crackling would have been welcome, but my wife had... More
