A very unassuming, somewhat out of the way venue. Nevertheless a very enjoyable evening. The staff are very attentive, the welcome in the bar/conservatory was very nice and made a change from being ushered straight to the table. The food was fantastic. Great choice for veges (like me). One drawback - cosmetically the conservatory was shabby as far as paintwork... More

I have driven past this place for the last 10 years and it was only a couple of days ago we (wife and I) decided to give it a try. Perspective: I am well travelled and love my food, whether it's from a street vendor in Chiang Rai or a Michelin stared restaurant. I love good service. Location: lovely, picturesque.... More

Everything you'd expect from a top restaurant. Chef keeps you amused with tidbits between immaculate unpretentious courses. A treat in a classic pleasant house nestling in English countryside.

My wife arranged a surprise experience for me at L'Ortolan, where we worked in the kitchen for a few hours and then had a tasting menu at the chefs table. It was great fun to meet all the staff, and have a laugh with Chef Alan and his brigade, as well of course of being at the heart of the... More

Went for a celebratory dinner with family. Lovely pre-dinner drinks on terrace and served by really warm and helpful staff. Dinner itself was just delicious and we went for the Gourmand menu with the cheese course before desert. The accompanying wine was excellent and we only chose the standard and not luxury selection. The tawny port we ordered with the... More

Thank you rockdrive22. We are delighted that you enjoyed your celebratory dinner with us and have passed all your kind comments on to the team. The fish tank is definately a feature not to be missed. We have seen some fabulous pictures taken by guests looking through to the kitchen and positively encourage anyone to do the same! We look... More

We ate here as a birthday treat for my partner and whilst the food and the service are very good,I don't think this is somewhere I would return too and at £325 for two its very overpriced. £13.00 for a glass of mediocre champagne!!! We ordered the tasting menu accompanied by the wine choice which was nice as we had... More

Dear Lippy48. Thank you for review. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food and wine on the evening and also found the service to be good. We're sorry to hear that the Champagne was not to your liking. At £13 a glass it would have been our new house Champagne, Charles Heidsieck Brut, which has won many... More

Good impressions start from car park. Plenty of room, so you don't worry that your new car will be scratched. Then you enter and warm greeting from staff prepare you for being well looked after. We were offered to have a drink at the bar or conservatory and we decided on the latter. As soon as we placed an order... More

My boyfriend took me to L'Ortolan for lunch on my birthday. The staff were friendly and welcoming and it really doesn't matter what you wear which is good as I was in my riding clothes. We had cocktails in the conservatory to start with but I was disappointed as I had a Peach Bellini with no stirrer and all the... More

I took my mother here for her birthday surprise and booked the chefs table in the kitchen. This was great! We were greeted and seated in the bar / conservatory area and met with a glass of champagne each. We were then brought canapes whilst we were able to peruse the vast wine menu, the Sommelier helped us greatly as... More

This was my first visit to L'Ortolan, courtesy of a Client. First impressions I have to say were not great-chipped paint, scuffed wallpaper in the uninspiring bar area. Food was ok but very much on the cusp of losing its One Star I would have thought. Interesting (no I should say bizarre) choice of wines to go with the seasonal... More

Dear Ian H. We are sorry to hear that your visit to L’Ortolan was slightly disappointing. We agree that parts of the décor need a refresh and this is currently in progress. I note that you dined with us in May which was just before the first stage of our refurbishment in the bar conservatory. The chef is aware of... More
