Popped in for a quick pub lunch a couple of weeks ago, thought a plate of ribs would be a good choice, serious mistake. Looked like they had been microwaved in a bag then a great big pile of BBQ sauce plonked over the top, not what was expected, the chips were good though. Eaten there several times since it... More

The Black Boy has a nice atmosphere and good pub food. It's popular for lunches and in the summer it has really nice outdoor seating

The Black Boy is local to us and we use it either for meals with friends or popping out when we cant' be bothered to cook. There is always something to tempt us on the menu and a variety of places to sit and enjoy the food. The restaurant is a bit noisy as there is not much to soak... More

My partner booked this restaurant for dinner last minute and the staff were very accommodating as we had to change the time, they informed us of a large group coming in shortly after us and so service could be a bit slow. The restaurant area is decorated to a high standard but still retaining a cosy pub feel, the staff... More

It's easy to locate in Shinfield, i.e. close to the roundabout by the old Reading Borough Council Offices also just off the M4. The Pub is typically Old English Style as it's hundreds of years old. It's comfortable, unpretentious, snug and roomy. Yes there are beams, barrels and subdued lighting in the bar area with simple decor and a few... More

Read a few other reviews and shocked! If we weren't with another couple I would have responded to the rude women who aggressively said "YES" after we had patiently stood at the bar for 5 minutes with the reply...." I had booked a table but you can give it to someone else if that's your idea of customer service" perhaps... More

Today have experienced less than accommodating treatment at this place, particularly my cousin who is a new Mum. This is NOT a baby friendly pub! On arrival was told to move from the bar area as under 14's are not allowed. Moved to a quiet restaurant area and was stared at every time the baby made the slightest noise. Had... More

A pleasant pub serving food in a restaurant atmosphere. The food is fairly priced - £13.50 for Sunday lunch beef main (£19.95 for the 'special' Beef Wellington) and puddings £5.50. Good range of beers while you are waiting. A good venue for family gatherings at lunchtime. It is our second visit. We had evening meal there the first time and... More

Weather was good, so we sat out in a pleasant non smoking area, child portions very generous, well staffed, good selection of food, must be good, as was well attended, but, no delays in service. Slight drawback was parking. Get there early!
