The Bear has an impressive princely past and it's a hotel steeped in the tradition of the area. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor started their love affair and at the height of their passion, played out much of the drama at The Bear. As you would expect, traditional is the order of the day and exposed beams, fireplaces and antiques create the perfect setting for business or a romantic lunch or dinner.
What's cooking?
Anything from warm apple crustade with Anglaise sauce and noisettes of lamb with grilled vegetable gateaux and a rosemary jus, to smoked salmon and fennel soup and baked cod fillet with a tomato compote and broccoli hollandaise.

We took my wife's Grandmother and her parents for afternoon tea as a Birthday surprise. The staff reserved a fantastic room for us and we're very accommodating when the stairs proved too much of an obstacle. They quickly set up downstairs for us and hosted us there. Came here last week for Sunday dinner, was absolutely amazing, the food was outstanding and the price was very reasonable, drinks are a bit on the expensive side, the staff were amazing, couldn't do enough for you! Would definitely go back for Sunday dinner!

Did not stay at The Bear. It looked very nice and obviously aspires to appeal to those wanting something a little more special than the norm. We simply popped into the bar for a drink and were surprised to be charge £15.90 for two small glasses of Merlot! Nice surroundings but surely a little overpriced.

We booked this hotel for New Year's Eve 2015/16 with friends. It is a lovely 'Olde Worlde' building with plenty of exposed beams & the smell of a log fire when you enter the main building. All of the staff were friendly & very attentive from the moment we arrived. To start the celebration there was an excellent afternoon cream tea... More

We were staying at this hotel and on arrival booked a meal for 10 people. They had no space in the restaurant of bar but kindly set up the Churchill room for us and this was perfect for us to catch up. The food was good and the staff really helpful.

For such a character hotel there is no central lounge with log fire. The lounge is on the first floor and seems very separate from everything. The only fire is in the bar.

Dear Guest Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were disappointed that the fire was not lit in the Churchill Lounge. We had chosen this hotel as it said it was 2 Rosette but when we saw the menu to be honest we were a little disappointed in what was on offer. I stayed at 'The Bear' and ate dinner here with 3 business associates in November 2015. It was my first visit to Woodstock and 'The Bear' has real character and a charm... Uneven floors, plenty of beams and interesting old artefacts. The Menu has some great choices and we all opted for the full 3 courses. I had the Mackerel... More

My wife and I try to visit the UK annually. For years, we have flown into Heathrow, rented a car and headed to the Cotswolds. Typically we stop for lunch at The MacDonald Bear in Woodstock.
