The Bear has an impressive princely past and it's a hotel steeped in the tradition of the area. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor started their love affair and at the height of their passion, played out much of the drama at The Bear. As you would expect, traditional is the order of the day and exposed beams, fireplaces and antiques create the perfect setting for business or a romantic lunch or dinner. What's cooking? Anything from warm apple crustade with Anglaise sauce and noisettes of lamb with grilled vegetable gateaux and a rosemary jus, to smoked salmon and fennel soup and baked cod fillet with a tomato compote and broccoli hollandaise.

A bit of a disappointment

This restaurant is set in a lovely olde-English building dominating Woodstock and had the added attraction of a place to park - quite difficult in Woodstock, so we opted for lunch. We had great service in a panelled sitting room where we had a drink and then went to the restaurant and ordered... read more

This is a charming quaint hotel in the old fashioned style. Service is good. Rooms are adequate. Food is mixed. Good but expensive wine list. Car parking is easy but approach via Refectory Lane and not the front entrance if your car is anything else than very small and narrow. There is nowhere better the stay in Blenheim/Woodstock. Handy for... More

We were very pleased with our choice of hotel for our special weekend away. Everything about The Bear exudes that old English charm that really was appreciated. We had a wonderful room with 4 poster bed - the very uneven flooring throughout the hotel only added to the experience. So far so good. We reserved a very nice table for... More

We spent Friday night at The Bear - it was a birthday treat for my husband and I had booked dinner bed and breakfast via the hotel website. The check in process was friendly and efficient and I happened to mention it was my husband's birthday during the conversation with the receptionist. Our room was on the top floor of... More

Tea at the Bear is a treat. Our party of five had the traditional afternoon tea, consisting of finger sandwiches, fruitcake, scones with clotted cream and jam, petit fours and of course, tea. All were wonderful and beautifully presented. It's expensive (about 18 GBP/person) but it's enough for a full meal and more. I've stayed at the Bear in the... More

We have eaten several times here over the past few years and while the service has always been attentive and the surroundings relaxing and professional (crisp table linen and napkins, comfortable chairs) the food has sometimes been a bit hit or miss. Last week it was very much a hit for Sunday lunch. Very good prawn cocktail with a delicate... More

We booked into this charming, characterful hotel for 3 nights, including the New Years Eve celebrations and we enjoyed our stay. The party on NYE was very good, due mainly to the extremely astute and personable DJ who got it totally right; fantastic music that suited the demographic of guests, something for everyone and all managed very professionally - A1... Having stayed at The Bear on several occasions I know the restaurant well. This visit for mid-week dinner was a vast improvement on previous meals eaten here. You will still struggle to find a hot starter other than soup of the day, but a least the terrine was room temperature and not fridge cold, and much better for it. The... More

Great ambience, food and service. Dinner was fabulous - classic food brought into the 21st century. Breakfast was one of the best I've had for years - great ingredients perfectly prepared and presented.

This was not our first visit, we were very much looking forward to it as previously the food had been very good. We booked a table for 7-00, as this was the only time slot availible.
