It has been a while since our last visit and i must say the Ground floor dining area is a bit soulless and far to bright. i much prefer the cosy atmosphere downstairs. That said the food as always is top class we started with Rillette De Poisson & Poelee De Saint Jaques both excellent followed by Mrs Bs favorite... More

Upstairs or downstairs? This is the animated French Living debate. I have to say I am with you and would opt for downstairs every time, but I am somewhat biased because the cellar is the original restaurant and holds so many wonderful memories. You may be surprised to hear that we have a huge loyal following of customers who will... More

My husband and I visited French living yet again on Tuesday night, we have been here numerous times now and really love the place. We went for the set menu this time, as the options were ones we were going to choose anyway. We shared our starters of snails and beef carpaccio, I then had the venison for my main... More

This is our fourth trip to French Living. We go there to have good hearty French food, decent wines, and friendly service. The fact is that service is a little slow, the interior is simplistic, and the dishes are uncomplicated. French Living is what it is - It won't win a Michelin Star, because it doesn't try to. Last night,... More

If freshly cooked, French classics was the criteria for a Michelin star, maybe we would deserve one. Although our rustic, home-made interior is just a tad too shabby chic for Michelin (having said that, we do now boast a chandelier!) Home-made anywhere will always encourage a slower than average service. I visited a Michelin starred restaurant in London a few... More

We went to French living for the first time for my partners birthday. When we got to the restaurant it was very quiet and we didn't initially feel very welcome, as we were told "just sit anywhere" (even though we had made a reservation) however as the night went on and my partner spoke French to one of the waitresses... There are some nights when we have only a handful of reservations in the book, which means that if you arrive early, the restaurant is yours! Free to choose whichever table you like. On busy Saturday nights, we have usually allocated the table to the reservation, which makes it more tricky to make changes if a customer is not happy... More

As a bona fide Francophile, no visit to Nottingham would be complete without a visit to my favourite French restaurant French Living. I first visited Stephane and Louise's restaurant twenty years ago and today I still come back for more. A good, robust rural feel to the menu is assured and the food is good, honest and enjoyable. The downstairs... More

Usually I love restaurants where you feel like you're abroad or just elsewhere. In FL you feel like that but only because you're in the basement which has a really strange atmosphere. The food was very average but it's what I've come to expect from French restaurants! My friend enjoyed her dish but I can't even remember what I ordered... More

Preconceptions are incredibly tricky to shift. From personal experience I know how hard it is. For example, I try to clean my mind every time Indian food is mentioned but my stomach starts churning before even reaching the restaurant. So I do identify with your troubled mind-set regarding French restaurants although my mind deals with French much better than it... More

For an unpretentious taste of rustic France this cannot be beaten .My favourite dish is traditonal snails in garlic butter followed by rare French cut of steak outstanding washed down with a bottle of matide red. Perfect setting for pre theatre patron Steffan and his friendly team are hard to beat. Very atmospheric and very good value

This used to be a basement french bistro with bags of atmosphere, welcoming staff and good food. It has now moved upstairs into a "shop window" type cafe with no atmosphere and an overbearing female in charge. The food han't changed, but the experience has been ruined.

French Living has evolved over the years but we have never removed the original basement restaurant. You can still dine in our atmospheric cellar, however, due to popular demand we have extended restaurant dining to the upstairs which includes a unique deli corner where you can buy our delicious French farmhouse cheeses and other French epicerie goodies and gifts. I... More

I wish I had something good to say about the food as the service was very nice. Unfortunately the execution of my meal was dismal. I felt that I had stepped back 20yrs, food swimming in fat or very over cooked meat and veg. Sprigs of mint in the puddings and a strange looking spike of rosemary in the rubbery... More

French Living represents classic, traditional cuisine and our French chefs are all trained to excecute French classic, home-cooked dishes in the time-honoured tradition which means that even 20 years ago these dishes would probably have been served in the same way. If you are searching for exploratory cuisine, avant-garde presentation, gastro-pub food, or even gastronomic French haute-cuisine, then French Living... More

My partner and I have started having our Saturday mornings at French Living for breakfast. The breakfast menu is excellent and the food is very appetising with first class service that sets you up for the weekend shopping. Highly recommended P/s and you can pick up some nice cheeses and foody treats at the same time
