Description: This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

We visited Cafe No. 8 after hearing good things about it whilst living in York for 8 years. We were made to feel very welcome and the atmosphere was great. Cosy little restaurant, but the real thing to write home about is the food. It was delicious! After perusing through the well-put-together menu and deciding that we actually wanted EVERYTHING... Food was excellent and a little unusual, service efficient but friendly, I had pigs cheek and black pudding with choritzo which was amazing, hubby went for the lamb which was also great, our starters and pudding were also very good, A set price for 2 or 3 courses and wine was good value with a thoughtful selection.

Having visited the restaurant before I made it my choice whilst in York last Sunday. Unfortunately I was left really disappointed. The roast beef was almost in edible and I was left underwhelmed by the rest of the meal. I even felt the restaurant not as pristine as it should be. Sadly I won't return.

I ate dinner at Cafe No. 8 three of the six nights I spent in York in June. Food is locally sourced and perfectly prepared. Atmosphere is cozy and friendly.

Encouraged by the many excellent reviews on this site and unable to get a table as a walk-in on a Monday, we were really looking forward to our booked dinner the following night. Didn't mind the ambience and the inexperienced waitress tried very hard but it must have been the good chef's night off. Our meals were obviously re-heated from... More

The street view would not prepare you for the back room and garden view which backs onto the city walks. We were lucky enough to have a table looking through the open doors. Gorgeous. The terrine came without bread which would have enhanced it. The vegetarian stuffed pepper was excellent. Vegetables were three variations on potato.!!! Reasonable prices for this... More

A small shop converted into a tiny restaurant, so light on atmosphere and maybe not the place for a special date unless you’re both foodies. Excellent food prepared by an imaginative chef with an assured touch. Confident seasoning, portions just right, fair pricing; one of the best meals I have had this year. Smiling, attentive service from waitresses who were... More

Visited Cafe No.8 today for a light bite but the menu quickly changed our minds and had full meals and a banoffee pie between us! The food was wonderful, I had the garlic mushroom stroganoff with chips, which I would highly recommend. The fruit cordials were also lovely. The staff were all really cheery and polite. When everyone around us... More

The price is very reasonable also for the quality. I will definately go again. The only quarm was the toilet bin not working or... More
