This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Simply superb food, beautifully presented, everything to like!

This was my first visit to Cafe no. 8 - and I loved everything about it. The food was superb, they are clearly using the best local ingredients around, cooking everything to perfection and presenting the food beautifully too. I really wish I had taken some photos of the food (which (I have never... read more

Café No.8 didn't disappoint when we decided to eat there at random one evening. The food and wine from the set menu were delicious and the service friendly and attentive. Food was beautifully presented, with a delicious range of flavours and the venue was intimate and comfortable. Will be returning soon!

This was my first trip to Café No 8 due to the fact that it is situated slightly off the centre of the main city and my mistaken impression that it was only a Cafe despite living in York all my life. Wow, what a find. Went with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday and was annoyed that... More

Yes, it's small and cramped (or cosy and intimate) so reserve your table in the conservatory to secure that view. I'm told it's always busy, and now I can see why. How on earth the kitchen brigade turn out such accomplished dishes working in what resembles nana's scullery is beyond me. But they do and our dining experience was well... More

2 courses for £10. Superb quality food. Light & full of taste. Just what you want at a lunch time. Excellent service. Well worth a visit. Better range of juices, maybe?

We stopped in for a breakfast, based on some suggestions of others on the TA forums. We were not disappointed. The breakfast selection was varied enough, including the old favourite (Full English). Cafe No. 8 also does a "Mini English" - which I found to be about right personally. I'm not normally a cooked breakfast person, so this was ideal.... More

The menu changes regularly; the food is fresh and very well cooked in a modern British style. There was a good menu choice with specials that tempted and a short, simple, very affordable but not too predictable wine list. (we were offered the option of BYO if the wine list was not extensive enough). It is a small venue split... More

Our first meal of a two week vacation in England was at this restaurant. The 3-course meal was the best meal I had of the entire trip to York, the Cotswold area and London.. The sauces in our meals were to die for. The food, service and presentation were impeccable. We also enjoyed the small, cozy and intimate feeling of... More

As part of our trip to York my wife and I visited Cafe No 8 and we were delighted to fine the food was. We arrived at about 6.30 without booking (as long as our meal was finished by 7.45). I ordered Lasagne (made with pumpkin, mushroom etc)' and a lovely array of beautifully cooked veg. My wife had pan-fried... More

We had sea bream with a caper and lemon butter sauce; sadly, the lemon didn't really come through. There was also too much salt in this dish. The vegetables were cooked well, i.e. crunchy. Unfortunately, the potatoes came drenched in butter. We already had a butter sauce so didn't need yet more fat. The rhubarb and custard meringue was a... More
