This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

so we were having a hard time deciding where to go for dinner...after a stellar brunch at brew and brownie i called back to see if they had a good recommendation for a dinner place that had a similar cuisine and decor as their restaurant...they didn't really have any strong suggestions. we should have just trusted the reviews and gone... This restaurant was just a two block walk from where we were staying in York. We got reservations on a Thursday night, and I am glad we did. The place was packed, with seating both up front and in the back. They had a varied menu, which included daily specials. Our service was friendly and helpful. The food was excellent.... More

We stumbled upon this small independent bistro in Gillygate, not too far from the cathedral, and were really pleased that we did. The food and service were both wonderful, with the menu offering a nice varied selection and the waitress able to advise on gluten free options. I had a really nice beef terrine with a wasabi sauce to start... More

Loved the fresh food, the flavours, the portion sizes. Italian flat bread sandwiches were amazing! The bread was a cross between naan and pitta, and quite doughy, and filled to the brim with rare sliced rump beef, home made horseradish sauce and salad. Nothing to dislike!

we pre-booked our dinner on the strength of Tripadvisor reviews and we weren't disappointed. It's a small bistro, very close to York Minster, which was really easy to find. We ordered starters from the daily specials board - black pudding with crispy bacon and a hot smoked salmon with beetroot and Melba toast. We both had the same main course... More

My partner treated me to a meal here. The pate was very tasty and the quality of the steak was superb. Polished off a very quaffable bottle of red and would have loved to try the cheese board but didn't have the space left after the first two courses.

Four of us for a meal Sunday evening. Excellent service that gave us plenty of time but staff were there when needed. The menu offered a range of dishes all very tempting. The food did not disappoint; all of a high standard. The price was good for the quality of food offered. We did think that the mains and starters... More

What a great restaurant. The food is absolutely fantastic, I actually think the spiced haggis I had as part of the lamb dish is one of the nicest things I've ever eaten! The restaurant itself is small, basically decorated but clean and cosy. Drinks are reasonably priced with a good selection, and the staff were all really nice. Can't wait... More
