This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Wow, I really want to slam this place so I will able to get a table next time I'm in York but it deserves a big 10/10 review. We were unbelievably fortunate to walk in and get a table for Sunday lunch, albeit by the door, but to be truthful we'd have sat on the pavement to eat that well... read more

A late lunch, snack required we had pate with delicious warm toasted olive bread, crispy salad, fab chutney. Lovely to have plenty of bread with pate for a Chang rather hen one tiny piece as often given! Really delicious.

Those who know York will know that there are some great little indy cafes, restaurants and shops along Gillygate (pronounced 'Jillygate' for those who haven't been before), so Cafe No 8 is both at home in the company and, in my opinion, more than meeting the standard. We'd not been before so sought it out on a cold January Saturday,... More

Small, relaxed and informal York bistro with a relatively small dinner menu. Good quality ingredients cooked with imagination. Knowledgeable and friendly service. Have been for lunch a few times, but this was the first time I have been in the evening. Could happily have chosen anything from the menu and puddings all looked great. Good value and unpretentious, booking recommended... More

I took my young daughter here for lunch. She chose the fish cakes and I chose the indian style vegetarian option. Both were beautifully presented and were delicious. Service was attentive and professional. My favourite place in York.

Went for a relaxed Sunday lunch. Fabulous mushroom soup and crusty bread. Salad and pesto toast a bit pricey. Good service and would recommend.

Been here a number of times. The food is impeccable we loved our meal this time round and think the cafe has great consistency in terms of food/ choice/ attentiveness of staff and atmosphere. The staff do a great job here and we would fully recommend a visit to any one. Keep up the good work!

Picked this one as had already seen all the good reviews on here and it certainly lives up to the hype. The service was excellent and all the staff are very friendly. We had two full English breakfasts and because my girlfriend doesn't like black pudding they happily put extra mushrooms on for her. The food was beautifully cooked and... More
