This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Excellent breakfast(?)

We went 2 days in a row. The first day breakfast was excellent. Big and tasty. So we went back for more on day 2. However the portion was much smaller - so much so I thought they'd brought the wrong order. After a quiet word they did bring extra food to make it up. I would rate day one... read more

I'd heard raving reviews about this place. It was OK. My lunch was a little soggy. Maybe I caught them on an off day.

Another quest for the perfect Sunday lunch bought us here, a place we'd eaten at many times before, but just for snacks and tea/coffee. They only sell expensive bottled beers and even more expensive soft drinks so a tipple with lunch is pretty restricted. Three of us that day and we ordered two lamb and one beef (no other meat... I honestly didn't expect this kind of menu for a place that, by its own admission, is a "cafe", but the food was absolutely delicious, in really unusual combinations but that really worked. I can't sing its praises enough. Their vegetarian dishes are amazing and it was lovely to not feel like I was missing out by choosing a vegetarian... More

This was our second visit, the staff here are great they are friendly and helpful and the service is tip top. The food on our second visit was just as good as the first, I had an artichoke starter which was light and fresh and the boys both had strips of lamb belly bread crumbed with some sort of tomato... This restaurant deserves a three rating for the quality of the food but there is something a little too ambitious about the place. It would really be better as a cafe, with its mismatched wooden chairs and plastic banquettes, seven tables in a very small space (two more tables at the back). Perhaps it's just me, but it does matter... More

Hello, Thanks for your review. I'm a little confused as our tables and chairs all match and we have a lot more than 2 tables in the back room. I don't share your opinion that we are over-ambitious, we just serve quality price at reasonable prices and always have done. I don't think we will be turning into just a... More

Nice intermit bistro lovely service with a relaxed atmosphere. Food cooked fresh and I love being able to see the Chef create his colliery delights with ease and purpose. Tasted just delightful. Happy all round and will be returning next time I'm in York.

Sunday three course was a very good deal (a bit higher Friday and Saturday nights for the same menu). Food was creative (without being silly), fresh and delicious, including some good veggie options. A nice selection of wines by the glass, too.

Visited for my wife's birthday whilst in York for the day. Excellent prix fixe menu with very good choice and excellent value in pleasant surroundings overlooking the garden. Service was pleasant and well judged and everyone enjoyed their food. We will return.
