This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Great food in a great atmosphere

We ate here on a busy Friday evening and were treated to some unusual dishes, well cooked, beautifully presented and served by a very attentive and friendly front of house team.

If you want a quick snack or something more substantial then this is well worth a visit. I was surprised to find that not only did they have the tables that you see from the window, you can go past the kitchen to a slightly larger space that was wonderful..... AND on a sunnier day I think we would have... More

We had a great meal at this small Bistro in York. They menu has plenty of choice and the wine is not over priced. The place was buzzing which made service a little slow, so maybe some bread and oil would have been good to make the wait for the starters a little better. The food was excellent with a... More

I was recommended the pork belly and boy was it a good one! The sauce complementing it was really tasty and the black pudding croquette was a good take on the traditional cuisine. The truffled potato gratin was a tad sourish for my liking though. The staff was friendly as well. From the dish I ate, I'm guessing they do... More

I only had a slow cooked pork belly and it was absolutely delicious! It could be the best pork belly I've ever had. I was too full for dessert, but my next table ordered espresso and it smelled too good so I had a double to finish my dinner. One thing u need to be aware of is the service... More

Fantastic food and lovely friendly service - so good we went back the following night! Looks small from the street but stretches way back to an outside terrace with the city walls above.

Visited Cafe No 8 after reading good reviews and we were not disappointed. Well balanced menu with something for everyone, food was excellent and not over priced. Wine reasonably priced and service attentive.

Came highly recommended by our GH owner and although the food was good the service was cold and impersonal! The place was not over busy for a Friday evening but even so it was difficult to attract the attention of the waitress and eye contact was frequently avoided. We were never asked if things were OK, even when paying the... More

Before our short visit to York we found this restaurant here to Tripadvisor and very glad we did. As always, it's the slighlty 'off the beaten track' places that are the best. My husband, 10 year old son and I agreed the food was excellent and the service warm and friendly. The roast beef was particularly delicious and the puddings... More

Great location. Easy parking just one street away. Went for lunch. Very relaxed but pleasant dining room to back. Delicious and reasonably priced food. My wife loves Banoffee Pie and said this was by far the best she had ever eaten. All the dishes were excellent. When we are next in York we will visit again. The description 'cafe' does... More
