Description: This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

We had a family meal on Saturday night at No.8 expecting it to be as good as everyone has talked about. Four steaks were ordered plus a fish dish for main courses. The steaks ordered were requested 1 medium,2 rare and 1 medium rare. These arrived very well done, not just a bit over cooked, completely the opposite to what... More

We've eaten here twice before and always been delighted by the quality of the food. It's a small, cramped, not very exotic restaurant close to the centre of the York, and their food is fantastic. I started with hake in coconut batter, followed by pig's cheek and roasted belly pork. It was amazing. But for those of you who are... More

Called early on Saturday night without a previous booking and got in just before the evening rush. Having eaten here a number of times before we knew what to expect. Small menu with well thought out and interesting dishes. Something for everyone - meat, fish and vegetarian. Decent choice of well priced wines. Friendly, helpful and unobtrusive staff. Pleasant surroundings.... More

We visited Cafe No. 8 after hearing good things about it whilst living in York for 8 years. We were made to feel very welcome and the atmosphere was great. Cosy little restaurant, but the real thing to write home about is the food. It was delicious! After perusing through the well-put-together menu and deciding that we actually wanted EVERYTHING... Food was excellent and a little unusual, service efficient but friendly, I had pigs cheek and black pudding with choritzo which was amazing, hubby went for the lamb which was also great, our starters and pudding were also very good, A set price for 2 or 3 courses and wine was good value with a thoughtful selection.

Having visited the restaurant before I made it my choice whilst in York last Sunday. Unfortunately I was left really disappointed. The roast beef was almost in edible and I was left underwhelmed by the rest of the meal. I even felt the restaurant not as pristine as it should be. Sadly I won't return.

I ate dinner at Cafe No. 8 three of the six nights I spent in York in June. Food is locally sourced and perfectly prepared. Atmosphere is cozy and friendly.
