Description: This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

I visited on a Friday night with my boyfriend, we sat at the window seat (which is my favourite seat, and I'm on crutches so it was a bonus to sit there so I'm out of the way) We also only booked earlier that day so it was very kind of them to squeeze us in....they are extremely accommodating. The... More

Exceptional quality food and terrific value. Pros: Small menu but great choices. (We both had stuffed artichoke heart, then loin of rabbit, and rump and shoulder of lamb). Great value. All cooked to order. Good staff. Brilliant. Wine by the glass same price as the bottle pro rata. Cons: None! Highly recommended

Cafe No 8 is just simply fantastic. It manages to deliver superb service, superlatively flavoured food in a testing environment. The kitchen and food prep area is on full view in a Rachel Koo sized space, located in a corridor between the front and rear of the restaurant. If you drop in for lunch you must try anything they prepare... More

Came here yesterday night with my friend and had three courses - all absolutely delicious! Some interesting meals with a different spin, excellent service and reasonable prices, I will recommend to friends!

Had a delicious lunch here when we first arrived in York because it was near our Guest House (Mont Clare). My partner and I had a gorgeous sandwich with a beetroot soup. It was unusual and so nice! Definitely go here if you get the chance.

Cafe no8 has a nice laid back atmosphere but great attention to both its service and food. We had booked in advance of a trip to York mentioning that coeliac friendly meal would be needed. When we arrived for dinner the waitress went through the menu outlining the coeliac options and so put us at ease .Both the starters and... More

There were 10 of us on a Thursday night and without exception everyone rated this as one of the best meals we've had in York or anywhere else. The food was exceptional and the service relaxed and unobtrusive. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Great location, lovely and helpful staff, great choice on the menu. Food came quickly (kudos to the one chef on shift!), was absolutely lovely and good value (three courses, a bottle of wine plus a soft drink for £70) - I've already recommended it to family members.

I had heard good things about Cafe No. 8, but Gillygate is on the opposite side of York to where I live. However, two friends who live quite close took me to dinner there recently, so I was looking forward to a good dinner. There was a board advertising four cocktails, two gin-based and two vodka-based. I opted for a... More

Well what can I say, it was a great start to our honeymoon (stopped off in York on our way up to Scotland). We sat in a lovely little garden with our dog and had a beautiful, simple and elegant breakfast. All at a very reasonable price.
