This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Delightfull lunch.

I visited following good reviews from friends and other TripAdvisor members. The scrambled eggs were mentioned a few times and as I was having breakfast I thought I'd give them a go. And guess what they were great! Really creamy and the side veg completed them very well. The atmosphere was very relaxing with a cosy feel to it and... More

Very small restaurant but fairly atmospheric. Both starters ordered were excellent as was my fish mains. Husband ordered beef but was not too impressed as he said it was very chewy and not to his taste. Perhaps he just made the wrong choice and we would like to come again, this time asking more questions about the way a dish... More

We called up on the same day to make a reservation for around 7pm, and they were lovely in accommodating all four of us on such short notice, despite being a very small restaurant (there are a few tables at the back, and a few cosy, close-knit ones at the front.) We went on a Friday night, which I should... More

Went with a friend for lunch. I am difficult to feed at the moment as I am on a zero carb diet. This was no problem for the young lady serving us. I had the beef sandwich without the bread! Very delicious and generous it was too. The horseradish cream was to die for. A glass of wine each and... More

Five of us gathered here for lunch, having travelled from far and wide. We had a great time, spending nearly four hours at our table. The staff didn't make any attempt to chase us away, but it was mid-week, so it may be different at a weekend. We were very grateful however. The food and the service were very good.... More

First time for us, but a favourite for our younger family, we booked for a Friday evening on a weekend break with friends. Small but very comfortable and with excellent food, beautifully presented, and good service we enjoyed this place tremendously and we shall return when we next go back to York. Managed to get the window table and the... More

Having dined here many times I thought it only fair to give a review as we are all too eager to complaint but never to praise. Every visit has left me full, satisfied and looking forward to my next visit. Excellent food, value for money and great service. A must visit

Recently visited cafe no 8 for dinner with friends. Very warm welcome, buzzing atmosphere. The hot smoked salmon, beetroot and horseradish cream trifle is wonderful and unusual. Main courses and desserts were equally delicious including the black pudding lollipop. Would definitely go again.
