Description: This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Our first meal of a two week vacation in England was at this restaurant. The 3-course meal was the best meal I had of the entire trip to York, the Cotswold area and London.. The sauces in our meals were to die for. The food, service and presentation were impeccable. We also enjoyed the small, cozy and intimate feeling of... More

As part of our trip to York my wife and I visited Cafe No 8 and we were delighted to fine the food was. We arrived at about 6.30 without booking (as long as our meal was finished by 7.45). I ordered Lasagne (made with pumpkin, mushroom etc)' and a lovely array of beautifully cooked veg. My wife had pan-fried... More

We had sea bream with a caper and lemon butter sauce; sadly, the lemon didn't really come through. There was also too much salt in this dish. The vegetables were cooked well, i.e. crunchy. Unfortunately, the potatoes came drenched in butter. We already had a butter sauce so didn't need yet more fat. The rhubarb and custard meringue was a... More

What a great find. We all had the 3 course menu. Artichoke, cottage pie, pork belly, soup, trifle, cardoman icecream..... All delicious and memorable. Would gladly eat there again if we had more time in York.

We came across this little Restaurant through looking for a place to eat with a Gluten Free Menu. What a find. We were not disappointed. The food is excellent (better than Michelin Starred we have been to) staff are polite and attentive. Although it was busy and only 2 chefs on we were not waiting long. We will definitely be... More

What a find! I took my partner there because of all the brilliant reviews. Not disappointed at all. Food completely superb and lamb to die for. Lovely bottle of Malbec. Decor very unassuming which really underplays the fantastic cuisine. £71 very reasonable, we have paid over double that in London's West End and not had food as good! Try, you... More

Lovely atmosphere even tho it was a quiet night in January, staff very efficient and the food was delicious we had mushroom soup, hot smoked salmon, beet root and horseradish trifle both packed with flavour and served with lovely fresh artisan bread. I then had the Persian Lamb, melt in the mouth perfectly cooked with scrummy seasonal veg and potato... More

We originally ate in this restaurant earlier in 2014 having had it recommended a few years ago, by a chef I met on a train from Newcastle. We really enyoyed our visit to the extent that, when we booked a weekend stay in York, as an early Christmas treat, we decided to go again. We were not disappointed. I choose... More

This is a small restaurant so I'm glad we booked in advance. Menu is small (4/5 choices for each course) which I always think reflects fresh seasonal cookery. Food was delicious and at ~ £25 pp very reasonably priced. Drinks menu too was good for a small establishment and their gin and elderflower a nice change from plain G&T. The... More

Good selection on the menu 2 courses for £30 . I had the sea bass with butter bean sauce , the butter bean sauce was delicious, it was served with lots of veg and potato of choice . For pudding I had bannoffie pie, which was delicious with the roasted almonds on top. The house white was really nice and... More
