This charming eatery is one of York's best kept secrets. Located just behind the old city walls, Caf No 8 has an intimate bistro-style ambience and a delightful hidden, paved garden out the back. The super-cheerful staff and delicious menu have won this restaurant awards and local loyalty, and the caf is always buzzing with a laid-back crowd. In the evenings the menu features favourites such as salad with fresh figs, blue cheese and pine nuts served with a blackcurrant and rosemary dressing, and home oak-smoked salmon fillet served with a bubble and squeak cake with a poached egg on top. We also love the vanilla panna cotta with spiced orange and mango salad, and stem ginger ice cream.

Came across this restaurant whilst looking for somewhere casual to have lunch with family visiting York. I hadn't reserved a table but was able to be seated in the lovely conservatory straight away despite other cafes that we passed being very busy. I had no expectations so was thoroughly pleased with the the service, atmosphere and food. We had 'sandwiches'... More

Inventive food at reasonable price with attentive but not over the top service. Very enjoyable. The room at the back of the retaurant was pleasantly quiet so we could hear ourselves speak !

We reserved a table for two for a Friday evening and when we got there at 7.45 it was full. We were seated in the conservatory at the back and thought it was a lovely atmosphere, fairy lights just outside in the courtyard and later on, a lovely moon view over the spires of the Minster. The menu was great... More

I've been here before for breakfast and will keep going back. £5.50 for a lovely clean healthy looking full English, non of your greasy caf fry up here! Bacon, sausage, egg, mushroom, great bread, grilled tomato. Just right! Got a pot of fruit tea aswell. £7.60 for a breakfast in a light and friendly place is good for me. The... More

This was my first visit to Cafe no. 8 - and I loved everything about it. The food was superb, they are clearly using the best local ingredients around, cooking everything to perfection and presenting the food beautifully too. I really wish I had taken some photos of the food (which (I have never done before!) as it was presented... More

Café No.8 didn't disappoint when we decided to eat there at random one evening. The food and wine from the set menu were delicious and the service friendly and attentive. Food was beautifully presented, with a delicious range of flavours and the venue was intimate and comfortable. Will be returning soon!

This was my first trip to Café No 8 due to the fact that it is situated slightly off the centre of the main city and my mistaken impression that it was only a Cafe despite living in York all my life. Wow, what a find. Went with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday and was annoyed that... More

Yes, it's small and cramped (or cosy and intimate) so reserve your table in the conservatory to secure that view. I'm told it's always busy, and now I can see why. How on earth the kitchen brigade turn out such accomplished dishes working in what resembles nana's scullery is beyond me. But they do and our dining experience was well... More

2 courses for £10. Superb quality food. Light & full of taste. Just what you want at a lunch time. Excellent service. Well worth a visit. Better range of juices, maybe?
