Very average roast, I cannot believe the very high rating that has been given previously. Frozen vegetables thinly cut meat Okay but average

This a quaint 17th Century pub looked away near Monk Bar on Goodramgate. Great lounge and bar with an atmospheric fire. Always made to feel very welcome here and I was pleased I tried the food at the weekend. The belly pork was cooked to perfection and the quality of the ales is perfect and well looked after. I look... More

We've visited York many times but for some reason had not visited this pub before. It was a good find. Apart from the front lounge bar, there is a cosy lounge in two sections at the rear of the pub which was really pleasant - and the bottle of Prosecco for £9.95 between 5pm and 7pm offer really hit the... On our first night back in York we decided to retry this place. The last time I was here was a year ago and as We had really enjoyed it last time decided to try it again. The restaurant part of this pub is set in the back room of the pub (the lounge) and it's very cosy and the... More

We arrived early to find that our table was ready, which was good. The service was prompt and efficient and the food was tasty and came in good portions. My venison steak was cooked exactly as I requested and the chips were definitely home made - no mass-produced, tasteless frozen things. The only let-down was the pudding: a sticky toffee... More

10 very cold ladies were struggling to find a place for lunch on a very busy day in York, after shopping on the Xmas markets. As soon as we walked in to the Royal Oak, even though the place was packed, we received a really warm welcome. The gentleman in charge found us a small function room at the top... More

I had an evening meal here along with my partner. The food was hot and tasty. There was a good choice on the menu. The dining room was a little quiet but it was mid-week. The staff were helpful and attentive. It's definitely a place I would return to. Quite reasonable price too.

Its nice to be greeted with a smile, and the beer selection is very good and well kept. A nice traditional English pub with great atmosphere.
