This place really has two parts - the speciality foods out front (teas, special balsamic vinegars, deli meats....) and a small cafe in the back for lunch. They have an incredible selection of speciality foods including baked savoury pies and breads. The cafe seats perhaps 4 tables and has a daily changing menu.

A friend recommended a cup of tea here. The Hairy Fig delivered a great cup of tea, lovely home made scones and a peaceful oasis of a garden in which to enjoy it. We were here with friend son the weekend of Le Tour and York was extremely busy. A cup of tea in this hidden away deli, and cafe was... More

We always pop in to the Hairy Fig for some delicious interesting food . Today was a Sicilian loaf , cheese herbs all baked into a delicious loaf , and what a cracker , best bread ever tasted and is a perfect accompaniment to a warm gooey Camembert . Thanks Hairy Fig .

Delicious olive tapenade and Epoisse cheese. Plenty of choice in cured meats and cheeses, as well as a large selection on breads. Very good value for money

The menu is simple & tasty. It's all heated without the use of a microwave, which is fab in my book. If you want lunch I would highly recommend booking a table as it's quite a cosy place & only has a few tables. In the good weather you can sit in the gardens of Merchant Adventures Hall. The staff... A lovely, characterful cafe-restaurant with a deli next door. The toasted sandwich I had (salami and cheese) was one of the best I have ever had. Friendly, welcoming service, too. All in all, a delight. Will definitely return.

A friend who used to live in York recommend this place for lunch and I'm so glad we went. The cafe is very small at the back of a delicatessen. I had the pate platter, with generous portion of chicken liver and duck with fresh bread, crackers, salad and conserve. It was fresh and delicious. My husband had the Yorkshire... More

Didn't eat in the restaurant but did make sure I stopped by before we left York to get a bottle of the 50 year aged Balsamic. They were very nice to let me try before purchasing. The balsamic is outstanding!

We ended up eating in The Hairy Fig Cafe after visiting the deli & we were really surprised! We had a small wait (5/10 minutes) until we managed to get a table, but it was worth it. I just had the bruschetta with mozzarella & my boyfriend opted for the Yorkshire platter & both were beautiful! Really different & fresh... More

Popped in on one of our regular visits to this quirky cafe, only has four tables but is a great place to visit. The toasted cinnamon bagels are excellent, they have a good variety of food available to meet most peoples requirements. It also has a delicatessen with a great variety of deli to choose from. It is located in... More
