We found the Hairy Fig while wandering round York, We had had some Balsamic Vinegar bought as a present, and had a look round both shops, fantastic service and a great range of coffee, tea, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and much more, Should be one of these in every town.

I go by once or twice a week to buy breads (terrific selection), cheeses (also great), olives and other special food items. I get the balsamic vinegars occasionally for us and as gifts. Have eaten in the cafe a few times - always very good.

Had coffee with a friend here the other day, we had hoped to have lunch but such a small space you need to book. Sat outside and whilst on the path with some occasional traffic not a problem. We did ask for cushions after a while as the metal bistro seats a bit hard after a while. Just had coffee... More

How do they cook such a variety of delicious menu items in such a small restaurant? We'll have to come back to try to investigate! My son had the duck salad (delicious) and the "Color Purple" soup (not sure if Alice Walker got any royalties) which had an inspirational combination of beetroot and horseradish. I had the homemade gnocchi with... More

It has rightly got a place into the top 10 places to visit in York! That is how I discovered it back in August 2012! With its versatile character, it is both an excellent deli, with its range varrying from its house ham, cheese and sandwiches to age-old balsamic vinegars; as well as a coffee/restaurant place with a cosy and... We went into the store because of the oils and vinegars. I never thought I would enjoy tasting vinegar, but it was a wonderful experience. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. I wish that we could have eaten in the restaurant, but it had just closed. We are going to try again in Sept.

We had walked past the hairy fig on a number of occasions and thought we would have a look inside and what we found was a little gem of a cafe. The menu is small and simple full of delicious home cooked food and local produce. This place is tiny and only sits aprox 10 people. If you can't get... More

A must. Only 4 tables in the back of this café/deli but what the two ladies produced was excellent value for money. Pot of tea for 2, oinky pie which came with minted mushy peas, slices of new potatoes, green beans, broccoli, fennel and a side salad was great. My husband had the meat plate which consisted of lots and... More
