Having previously had a pleasant visit here just before Christmas we returned for lunch and weren't disappointed. A reasonable selection of comfort foods and interesting platters and some good beers. The biggest attraction is the quirkiness of the whole place, in a medieval type setting with various artefacts adorning the walls and a view out of the window of York... More

Went here several times during a week long stay in York. The upstairs bar has such a lovely atmosphere. A fantastic choice of beers await, even more in the downstairs shop. Many Belgian and German beers, some of which are a little pricey, but not more so than when we stayed in Bruges last year. The food is very reasonably... More

A fantastic small bar. Loved the beams, stuffed animals, the furs on the back of the seats. We shared a pie and pickle and a wonderful salad. The salad dressing is amazing as is the cooking area. Expensive beer, Yorkshire war cry 'how much !!!' But worth it for the eclectic experience and lovely friendly staff. Will be returning soon!

We dropped in to this place on a Monday lunchtime for a swift drink and a bite to eat. Vegetarians and PETA supporters would probably go a odd shade of green with the stuffed animals on the wall, but you can't please everyone. Drinks, a tad on the expensive side, food well priced and delicious. I can imagine it gets... More

This place is amazing. It's so old and authentic, the entire place looks like it's been pulled straight out of the history books untouched- high beamed ceilings, sagging creaky staircase, an entire wall filled with taxidermy animal heads, fur pelts to wrap around yourself as you sit and eat, old wobbly-glass windows looking out over York's skyline, it's so atmospheric... First of all, it is small. This is very common for York and just embrace it. Secondly, the interior looks like a natural history museum. Thirdly, service is very lovely and I am amazed how well they cope in such a small kitchen. Fourthly, the food is very good. The portions are massive, so I recommend to try out some... More

What a fantastic place, an old style building that sells beer etc downstairs as a shop and then has a fantastic bar upstairs although the amount of customers is limited its worth waiting. Dont think i have ever seen such a range of beers for sale but some of them are quiet expensive, high ceilings, wooden beams, stuffed heads, wooden... More

Really enjoyed visiting this quirky and friendly bar. Difficult to locate as it is found via a narrow staircase at the back of an excellent off licence. The bar is small but we were lucky enough to get a seat and to sample some well kept and unusual beers served by the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The place was very... More
