This was the second time we've been. If you like quirky, different, great drinks and wholesome food this is your place. We had the 1lb pie and the hunters platter. The pie was so good we bought two to take home from the shop downstairs! Always leave full and merry!

What a find. Such an unusual pub with very tasty strong beer on tap. Food looked very good but unfortunately i had just eaten so was gutted not to fit in one of their pies. Staff very friendly and offered good advice. The building is amazing and unusual with stuffed animals crawling around the place. Sounds odd but fits this... More

Come on. let's be clear. It's a pub which serves some food. It's almost '70's style / continental. The food is rpepared behind the very small bar. No chefs in hats, no waiting staff. just a team of people in small surroundings. Clear? (because some people clearly have misconceptions). The surrounds are great. Cramped and crooked - because it's 12th... More

Visited for the first time on Sunday and I hope to return. This has to be one of the quirkiest bars in the UK. When you enter this third floor bar you are hit with sumptuous smell of home made food and ale. The candles and shape of the bar add to an outstanding atmosphere. This bar is excellent, atmospheric,... More

With an odd name and even odder décor to match – the house of the trembling madness is a small pub located above a bottleshop on 48 stonegate road. From the street you won’t know it’s there but once you go into the bottleshop you will be re-directed. It is an atmospheric establishment with a 12th century room with limited... More

We were so happy to find this quirky little pub on our recent holiday to York. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious wild boar sausages and mash and one of the drafts on offer. An amazing atmosphere and delicious food!

We went here to look at the shop and sample a few drinks up stairs as recommended by several friends. Fantastic! I had a few different types of beers and mulled drinks for the with and some nibbles. Great atmosphere, very quirky, not to expensive. Went back the next day to buy beers from the shop

Full of character and very informal, the platters of food are excellent and it is amazing they come from such a compact kitchen! Great selection of strong European lager, and guest ales too. Don't expect big groups and Sky,this is more discerning! Sit on a bench and talk to strangers from around the world. Then buy take outs from the... More
