I visited this establishment by chance last Friday mid afternoon. Very interesting decor and layout tho very small. I ordered a pint of cask ale, with only 2 on offer I opted for "comfortably numb" (thebadbeerco.)!! What I was presented with resembled a thick cloudy soup, slightly orange in colour. I thought it may benefit from resting so I gave... More

Recommended by a friend who loves his beer and not disappointed. Quirky surroundings and slightly crackers staff who were friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, Small menu at modest prices and belting beers/spirits etc. Wish I lived in York!

I had so much fun here! A delicious pint. Brilliant food - tasty starters, delicious burger, and the Hunters platter were all awesome. There is such a nice atmosphere. Quirky decorations and well worth a visit. I can't wait to go back! Will definitely be visiting the beer shop below too- such a good selection.

Had read a review so knew to go upstairs in what is a shop selling beer downstairs, and was there at 12 noon so got a seat before it filled up as the room upstairs is not large. Tried the local new beer from the beer festival which was named Black Jesus and it really was a religious experience....absolutely fantastic.... More

Up the stairs -- over to 1 of the maybe 12 tables -- stare at the stuffed animals on one entire wall -- look at the tattoos on most patrons --- and THEN --- walk up to the bar. But don't ask for a drink list as they have over 100 and it changes so often it is 'not worth... More

We spent a couple of hours here yesterday and had a great time. The staff were very friendly, particularly the dark-haired barmaid who was quick to fix a mistake over change. It has a great atmosphere and selection of drinks and the food was pretty good too. We will definitely come again.

Found by chance for lunch on Monday; food & atmosphere so good we returned on Tuesday evening & weren't disappointed. Staff cheerful & offered tasters of the beers on tap we weren't familiar with, despite being busy, & the 60's soundtrack was an added bonus. Worth a trip to York on its own. Spirits in shop very well-priced; came back... More

HOTM is worth visiting for the name alone! It is a creaky old place with not much room for manoeuvre unless you manage to grab a table. There are a few decent beers on tap and food is available. The two unisex loos are downstairs in the shop section which is quite bizarre although I suppose they had to work... More

I am one of life's must laid back people and sometimes I look at reviews on trip advisor which are not good and think some people are never pleased with anything in life. I went to this place yesterday as I had been recommended it and was looking forward to going. We saw the sign which said bar upstairs and... More

Tiny place very lucky if you actually get in and sit down but when you do it's very atmospheric and impressive food for a little place with no kitchen! We do like to try and get in here when in York and the trick is like most places try to avoid the peak eating and drinking times. Friendly staff who... More
