This place was recommended to us so we paid a visit. Great atmosphere, good choice of drinks & nice food too. But got to say, the decor is out there. Some will love some will loath but it is very warm & inviting. But tiny so be prepared to wait to be seated. But its a must visit place

A friend and I visited the House of the Trembling Madness last night. As it was getting late the barman started going round and putting out candles in a very unconventional manner splashing wax all down my favourite black top. When I told him about this he laughed it off and dismissed it as a joke, I awoke this morning... More

Went to this place after recommendation by a friend and so glad we did. We didn't eat but had a few drinks and enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere. It was lively and warm and the building oozes history. Bar staff were really friendly and we were able to relax and enjoy our surroundings. Also the shop downstairs selling all the different... More

After reading the reviews on TA I decided to try this place for dinner; the menu posted outside looked like typical pub food with a choice of small or larger portions. The downstairs is nearly like a beer library, filled with every conceivable beer possible then you climb the steps to get to the small dining area with the feeling... More

I visited the House of the Trembling Madness with my Italian boyfriend who was visiting England for the first time, and, on recommendation, thought that taking him here whilst in York seemed a good plan. It certainly was! The Medieval theme, animal furs and game mounted on the walls is fantastic, as well as decent beers and ciders on draft,... More

An enchanting place - quirky, unique, and some beautiful beers. So good to be back in York and visiting somewhere civilised (unlike The Lowther where the doormen / bouncers are like jackals). Thanks House of Trembling Madness! Had a great time.

You know, there are some places so good you almost don't want to share because it'll get so busy you'll never get in again, but honestly, this place is a treasure. The atmosphere is medieval, heads of boars on the walls, bear skins on chairs, stunning view of the Minster out of a crooked window. Phenominally busy, but hard to... More

Okay, so thanks to the likes of Tripadvisor it isn't as secret as it might be! But basically this is a bar which is tucked away above a beer shop, and unless you knew it was there you'd be very unlikely to ever find it by accident. It is great for esoteric beer, but having eaten there tonight I have... More

Was recommended this place from a friend. Read reviews in here and mostly positive, always read negative to see why and most complained about time it took to get food. Don't let them put you off. I went in at 1.30pm and sat down easy and food came pretty quick for what I ordered. Had a Yorkshire platter and a... More
