Description: DuelWe are deeply proud of Duel. We celebrate our passion for good, our love of ingredients and respect for classic flavours, but we do so with a smile and with an inquisitive mind as we explore how modern techniques can enhance or even challenge the traditional. Grays Court is a boutique hotel and heritage property in York that boasts over 900 years of colourful history. Nestled between the Minster and city walls. We are a one-off, a country house hotel in the heart of the city waiting to be explored. As well as seven individual luxury bedrooms, we house a vibrant cafe and walled garden which proved a beautiful and original venue for meetings, private dining and celebrations.

Grays Court is right behind the Minster. You really couldn't get any closer. We stayed in the Willoughby Suite & it is beautiful.Had the best 2 nights sleep in the enormous four poster bed. Lovely views of the garden where we watched a squirrel playing early in the morning. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff & offered lovely warm... More

we had been really looking forward to our get together at Grays Court, we meet most months and like to try somewhere different each time in York, We really felt unwelcome, we had drinks but had to find someone to serve us! our order was taken and then we had to ask if we could go to our table! going... Hello Janet, I am sorry to read your review, but just want to clarify a couple of points. I can't imagine why you felt unwelcome, as my staffs are always friendly. Your party did not arrive together, and although your drinks order had been taken, and were being prepared, the later arrivals chose to the bar to order rather than... More

Following a walk of the bar walls we chose to visit here for a late lunch due to the weather being so hot and therefore afforded us the chance to sit outside in the gardens. I must say that the location here is absolutely stunning with great gardens that afforded us the chance to bask in the sun whilst waiting... More

Dear Joseph, I was sorry to read your review, and to hear that you did not enjoy your experience. I was also surprised when I read your account of the time it took to have your order taken. I was actually working in the garden that day and saw how long it took the staff to seat you and take... More

We visited this restaurant having seen some good reviews in a Yorkshire magazine, and found it was all hype. This is sightly expensive for what it is. The views are fine, but he food is average and the waiting staff were rather short on training. When wine is brought to your table you don't expect it to be just dumped.... More

Dear Stuart, Thank for your review, we welcome all critique as we constantly look to improve. You refer to a review, written in 2012, in Yorkshire Living. That review was entirely justified, but it was a review of our tasting menu, which we have now changed to a more accessible a la carte option. The tasting menu, which was either... More

My wife and I stayed here for one night as part of quick city break. As we entered the hotel we were offered coffee and freshly baked cookies , a nice touch this , it costs the hotel next to nothing but was highly appreciated by us . Evening meal was magnificent , beautifully presented and full of flavour. All... More

After walking the walls of York we noticed a cafe situated in beautiful gardens so went to investigate. We asked to sit outside and were shown outside by a man in a suit to pick a table. The garden was empty apart from us. We waited, and waited, watched a table being cleared. Waited some more, then saw the same... More

Hello, I am sorry that you left with such a bad impression of our service here. We do try our best at all times, and your account does not read well. I remember seeing you arrive and I have and checked with the staff here before replying. You decided to sit in the garden, choosing the summerhouse as it was... More

This is a lovely, hidden gem of a place in a fantastic location in York. Whilst not cheap, we had beautifully prepared food and the hot chocolate is certainly worthy of a mention! Very surprised by some of these reviews, perhaps not to everyone's taste, but for the more discerning visitor that wants to enjoy the unique and beautiful surroundings... More

Hello, Thank you for your review, and for taking the time to post such kind comments. I am glad you enjoyed your visit, and hope to see you again. There are quite nice cakes here and the setting is superb. But the service is laughably awful. I live in York and quite often take visiting friends here for the joke of experiencing such incompetent waitressing.

I am perplexed by your review; if you truly find service so poor, why keep coming back? If it is to entertain your visitors as you say I could think of better things to do than make them watch you carp and criticise. York is full of wonderful places to visit and surely that would be a nicer thing to... More

We were really looking forward to afternoon tea at this historic venue. However, we were sorely disappointed. The food was below average. The ham sandwich quarters had so much mustard they were almost inedible. When we asked if there was an extra charge to replenish the sandwiches we were told "no" - so we did (this time we requested less... More

Old friends suggested having lunch here during our them stay with. We were not disappointed, If you want a pub or bistro style meal, but in more elegant, calm and luxurious surroundings, then this is the place for you. We sat in comfy armchairs and enjoyed freshly prepared and cooked dishes: an excellent ploughman's, hot fish pies, a beetroot with... More
