Went here for lunch and to be honest the food was ok. However if I'd visited the ladies toilets first I would have left immediately. The sink area looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a very long time it is really filthy. This also goes for the walls around the hand dryer and radiator.

I can recommend the Beef and Ale Pie in this pub absolutely delicious and filling. The pastry was done exactly right and so much meat I couldn't believe it also the vegetables which accompanied the pie were excellent This us a 13th century pub and had so much atmosphere as well as a real fire which adds to the character... I guess this is what you would call a real old fashioned English pub. It has old world charm in bucketfuls and a fine range of real ales although the lager/cider side of things is not as good. With fires burning in the old hearths and the warm glow of the ancient timbers this is a most pleasant venue in... More

I call into this pub at least once a month, I love it. The landlord and staff are very friendly, chatty and the pub has a good vibe. The beer is always perfect. I have not had a meal there but quite often have one of the pork pies that are on the bar. This is alway a treat and... More

A big pub with lots of space. A decent pint of hobgoblin. Varied clientele but shame about the language from the teenagers.

Called in for a pint. Nice friendly staff ( some nice background music - not too loud either). Good selection of beers and some quirky features.

Since I last reviewed this pub a year or so ago, things seem to have gone downhill quickly. The beers aren't as varied or well-kept as before - many favourites have disappeared from the pumps altogether. The new manager has tried to update the interior and added a garish sweet dispenser which has detracted from the charm of this old... More

As frequent visitors to York we always make time to have a drink at the Red Lion after a days shopping. We loved this pub - always assured of a very warm welcome from the landlord, John and his excellent staff. We visited York this weekend and made our way to the Red Lion for refreshments .......but no John and... More
