Super Fish & Chips

Had often read about the Magpie Café so when we visited Whitby, I felt I had to give it a go. Very busy even on a weekday in March, short wait for a table, quite cramped but I suppose that was because it was so busy. Cod & chips lovely, not exceptional but good. I think it is a case... read more

We never come to Whitby without eating here. It is a real experience and you have to book. They literally have hundreds of covers a day. The building is lovely with lots of floors and hideaways as well as possible sea views; the staff, the majority of whom seem to be older women, are lovely and the food is incredible.... More

We always go to Magpie when in Whitby and it never disappoints. On this occasion food was as good as ever and service excellent.

I've had takeaway from here in the past and it was very good, this time we ate inside. Not disappointed! A short queue to get in, service from our waitress was good and timely. I had the plaice which was the best I've ever had, good chips too. Finding it hard to make any non-positive comments, but I suppose it's... More

Ate here during the week, hadn't booked, but we were accommodated very quickly upstairs. Venue itself is definitely cafe style rather than fine dinning. Menu is vast, most dinners were having fish and chips, but hubby and I opted for a Magpie Medley. This was supposed to have Tubot in it, but Turbot was off, so we chose Monkfish as... More

We queued outside for a whole hour to get fish and chips. They were very average we ate at fish in a box the day before and they were better. It seemed that the staff were trying to rush because of the queue and this compromised the quality.

Lovely welcome on arriving, staff very friendly. Great décor, our 5 year old son was made up with all the crab/lobster pictures, clean and homely. We had traditional fish & chips which was just yummy and the mushy peas were the best we've eaten, more expensive than your average chippy but definitely worth it, lovely atmosphere, would love to return.

This is without doubt the best fish restaurant in Whitby, despite there being about 30 or 40 more. The staff are very efficient and friendly and most have worked in the restaurant for years. The fish menu is extensive and reflects what has been caught locally in the last 24 hours. The haddock and chips are sublime, so fresh you... More

Friends told us to visit the Magpie and we were not disappointed. The quality of the cod and chips is way above what we are used to. The service is good with much chatter to all the customers.
