This is a fantastic place to eat and the best fish I have ever tasted anywhere in the world! You really must eat here despite the long queue, because it is really worth the wait! more

Someone suggested that we wouldn't be disappointed eating at the Magpie. We had to queue for 15-20 minutes before we were seated at lunchtime. Service very friendly and efficient. Fish really was excellent - if you don't like fish this isn't the place for you. Good wine list - we greatly enjoyed the Pure Pinot Grigio. No one hurried us... more

We had heard of the magpie's reputation for excellence and arrived in Whiby off the steam train from Pickering eager to try it. We were not disappointed. Yes, we had to queue but this added to the anticipation and whetted the appetite, the old fellah coming out said "beware the portions are huge!" and he wasn't kidding. I have a... more

We went on a quite Monday night in the early evening. We had a choice of tables and did not have to wait in a long queue. Food was excellent, particularly the seafood salad with lobster. Choice for children excellent. Healthy options too which makes a change in a fish and chip restaurant. Would recommend going at a quiet time. more

Have been to Whitby before and know how popular the Magpie is, we timed it to avoid the worst queues. As usual the food was superb and the waitress as friendly as one has come to expect of this little gem. We were lucky enough to get a window seat and enjoy the views over the harbour. Will certainly be... more

There is no finer fish and chip emporium in the British Isles than this place. Even the young girl puking up in the corner (stupid parents should've taken her out) didn't put me off my meal. Lord knows how someone eats the special in there as it must be about three feet long. The service is first class and if... more

I've visited the Magpie Cafe a couple of times and both times I've walked out very full of superb food! The portions are large, and the quality is superb. The service too is very good and we had a lovely waitress who looked after us. Highly, highly recommended and worth the wait if you have to queue up outside. more

The Magpie has nebver been quite as good as its reviews suggest. But these days the constant queues outside seem to have produced a complacency within. The food is okay although the fish is invariably over battered and the service lurches from the acceptable to the dismissive. Go to Trenchers for better fish and chips and better service or for... more
