My son and I were visiting friends in Yorkshire last month and one day we all took a road trip to the lovely town of Whitby on the North Sea coast. It is well known for it's ancient Abbey, Dracula, and fish and chip restaurants. Our friends told us the best one was the Magpie Cafe, but they had never... More

We have been visiting the Magpie for many years so for our mini break my wife and I came here two nights running...many people just have fish and chips but look beyond this and you will have a fantastic meal. The squid starter and crab parcels starters are wonderful....look on the specials board...we had hake in a wonderful coconut curry... More

Visited at lunchtime, lucky for us, no queue. Ordered the crab salad, coleslaws and a large portion of chips, big mistake, the salad arrived and it was massive, it was beautiful, the chips looked really nice but we were too full to eat them. The staff were friendly and the food was delivered pretty quickly.Absolutely no qualms about going back.... More

Being a vegetarian I ordered leek and tomato pasta and garlic ciabatta for £10.95 from the magpie restaurant. When the food arrived I was disappointed to see the ciabatta was infact just a t-cake that was deepfried in oil!! I told a member of staff, and received a reply 'what do you want me to do'im a rude and abrupt... More

Had a fantastic meal here recently. Great mussels for starter - obviously well selected as everyone was open and in a delicious cream sauce. Companions had coquille st jacques and pate which both went down well. Main course could not decide between haddock or skate so had the menu option to choose both. Delicious and v large portions with freshly... More

Must be our 6th visit or so and it never fails to impress! I had the lobster with Parma ham on toast to start whilst my husband had the sea food pot and they were both amazing, our mains were even better! We always book weeks in advance to make sure we get in and don't have to queue outside,... More

We consider a trip to the Magpie to be an essential part of a visit to Whitby. This time my wife enjoyed a lobster based starter from the "blackboard video screen". I conservatively opted for Haddock and chips. I was slightly disappointed as I found the batter too thick and the fish was slightly under-cooked. I wish I had been... More

Really enjoyable fish and chips. We each had a medium cod and chips, the fish was massive, I think the small would have easily filled me. Like I say it was really enjoyable but I couldn't honestly say that it was any better or worse than my local, very good but not exceptional. I'd have another fish dish if I... More
