Like stepping back in time!

What at amazing treat to step back in time. Only complaint is this place can be very popular and crowded. Even standing up you can't help but enjoy letting your eyes wander around this place. The port and Madera are great!

We last visited years ago and fondly remembered the cheese board, great wines and Victorian style underground cellar, candles and old posters. So we went back on a trip to London and we weren't disappointed, incredible lunch (it was hot so we ate outside in the quaint shady passageway that backs onto Embankment park and bandstand) great wine, first rate... This is a great place to go after work with mates from work if you can get a table outside otherwise you have to sit in the cavernous basement. Got a table out side only for 2 different groups of people asking to join the table in the end we had 8-9 people crowed round a little beer barrel table... More

Four of us visited on Friday evening packed as usual but it doesn't take too long to be served . We found a table inside under the arches I don't think this place has been cleaned since before the First World War but this adds to the atmosphere . Nice nibbles wine port and sherry no beer IT'S A WINE... More

Most wines by the glass are under £10 which is good value for London. The unique cellars create cosy ambience but unfortunately the commercial disco music coming from the bar ruins the magic. Cheese platters are generous and worth the price but the cheese server didn't know anything about the cheeses nor could give recommendations. The clientelle are mix of... More

this is one of the more interesting looking bars I have ever been in, it was absolutely packed inside and out. People going by with plates of cheese, meat etc to candle lit tables. Go and visit for the decor alone, felt like it was 200 years old

Unfortunately it is now on the tourist map and has lost a little of its mystique. Still a lovely wine bar with real character. Well worth a visit.

Good, reasonably (for London) priced wine, havent eaten there for a while but it all looks great. Unfortunately, the staff are pretty rude! When I was there recently, post-theatre, the only available barrel/table was right at the end of the passage outside, which was fine, but as more tables became free we were told in no uncertain terms that we... I was shocked to find no soft drinks on offer. They apparently do offer orange juice, but on the day I visited had run out! As a driver, all they could offer me was tap water!

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
