Drinks with a friend, great atmosphere

A friend of mine took me to this amazing wine bar, which until now I had not known. Just a stone's throw from Embankment station, this wine bar claims to be "the oldest wine bar in England". Whether or not this is accurate it cannot be denied that the place exudes history. From the news clippings... read more

Gordon's is about the cellars of old London. You could be walking into the 18th or 19 centuries. Serving wine and fabulous port. Tables just lit by candles so lots of atmosphere in the vaulted, damp cellar. Fabulous cheesboard with glasses of port.

Loved it & had a seating in the cave part but £20 for a cheap bottle of Rose that's £3.99 in the local supermarket sort of made feel as though I'd been ripped off. So because of this reason only I down marked it. The wine bar is unique & defo well worth a visit though

I've been here twice now and walked past it many a time. When I've walked past, it's been really busy. The two times that I've enjoyed my visit have been around or just before midday. I've enjoyed a glass or two of port and a plate of cheese. Both have been superb. Both times, we've managed to sit inside the... More

Experience London from Dickens' day, sipping fine port under the arches of this wine bar tucked below Charing Cross. Here the rumble of trains from some subterranean, chat over the flickering of candles in old wine bottles, casting a warm glow across ancient brickwork and dark, stained tables that could tell a few stories. Lose yourself in the mists of... More

When to Gordons on 25th July, the place was packed but they have added more tables outside. They also now have a bar outside as well, so getting a bottle of fat bastards is a doddle. The bar used to be a bit of a secret and eventhough the secret is out its still retained a friendly cosy atmophere.

We took a guest there on Friday afternoon. It was extremely busy, waited about 10 minutes and found a seat. As usual the ambiance and wine was great. We decided to have something to eat - yuck - ordered 2 x lamb & 1 fish curry, we got 4 cubes of dry lamb and 1/2 plate of rice. The curry... More

One of my favourite places to drink in London. Really interesting selection of wines all topped off with assortments of cheese and meets. If it's sunny you can sit outside but the real experience is downstairs in the converted cellar. Can be difficult to find a table at times and to be honest you've got to be ruthless at times... Abridged: Staff not good but otherwise worth a visit. Warts N All : This is a good place for a social business meet. If the weather is good then there is a large area outside in the form of a long pavement corridor, but it is a pedestrian area so no vehicle disturbance. The house Red was okay but I... More

What a way to while away an afternoon... get there early if you want a table but the wine is cold and delicious and the cheese platters are terrific

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
