Looking for a good sushi place, i settled for Umu as i've been to Zuma and the likes before. Yes the food is good, some of it very good (traditional sushi) but for the 1st time in my life i still felt hungry and mind you, i'm a skinny little woman who eats normal/little portions. The place is expensive but... More

Great spot hidden in Mayfair's Bruton Place.. We didn't gofor the Keiseki menu but the A la carte one.. Very good fare, great sashimi and sushi, and the excellent service and attention make all the difference. We highly enjoyed the decadent chocolate dessert at the end of our meal..

The point here is the kaiseki menu, which is a Kyoto speciality. Kaiseki here is strictly for the experience, and not a meal. It is very refined, the presentation is amazing, the tastes subtle but and mostly delicious (and sometimes unusual.) Although the menu had many portions, some of them would not even qualify as a "nibble". Be warned, after... More

The tasting menu contained an excellent variety of interesting dishes. The service was excellent throughout. Expensive, but worth it.

I joined a small group of friends at Umu to celebrate my 40th birthday. Due to the size of our party, we all took the special Kaiseki menu which was spectacular. I'm more accustomed to sushi or izakaya-type standards and I was blown away by the variety of flavors and presentations. Each of the courses were modest in size but... More

I found the food not "differentiated" from other top-quality Japanese restaurants that are available at a much lower cost and more interesting atmosphere. Now, I accept that atmosphere is very relative and personal (perhaps more so than meal quality and service), so it's best if I describe the atmosphere as low-key, quiet (except for the greeting!) and simple but Asian-elegant.... This was our second visit, so clearly we are fans. The whole experience is different to many top restaurants, understated, buzzy yet very refined. It's a place where people concentrate on the food rather than the glitz and others around them. This is also reflected with the staff, efficient knowledgable yet informal and relaxed, an excellent combination. We started with... More

Several small portions but divinely good. Probably one if the nicest meals in a long time. Eating at umu is an experience and we would recommend this restaurant if you ever have anything to celebrate.

Amazing food, unbelievable attention to detail, an absolutely outstanding experience. Tokyo style sushi - every single piece is prepared individually, and each one is a like a little piece of art. You can check the menus and prices on the restaurant website. Look up Chef Yoshinori Ishii, he used to work in a 3 Michelen star restaurant in Tokyo, and... More

Umu is my favourite Japanese restaurant in London. It is not an entirely rational preference: there are several good Japanese restaurants in London but I am a sucker for the location -tucked away in narrow atmospheric Bruton Place - and the theatre of the entrance. Of course the food is excellent too! I have had lunch there quite a few... More
