Fantasticly different

Firsly, the entrance and atmousphere is something special... nestled down one of Mayfair's quietest roads. The food is perfectly presented, with some of the best sushi i've ever tasted (on par with nobu). However, the portions (although tasty) are tiny... i am sure this is owing to the... read more

One of the best Japanese restaurants i've ever been to - everything was excellent, starting from simple and delicate home made tofu through delicious wagyu beef tataki, one of the most delicate ways to prepare it to a large selection of sushi, sashimi and other makis, with freshest and most delicious fish in town and very original and daring combinations.... I went here with my aunts and cousins as a family hen do, and due to the size of our party we were told we had to go for the tasting menu. We expected 6 courses (as that's what we were told we'd get) but there were more like 10!! Not all were delicious, but some were amazing!! The cold... More

After watching a documentary on NHK about head chef Yoshinori Ishii, we could not wait to try the kaiseki menu at Umu. And we were not disappointed. The staff was very attentive; from taking the reservation on the phone to serving the food and drinks. The kaiseki menu looked amazing and was delicious. However the drinks are far too expensive.... We had really disapointing experience at Umu. The hotel told us that this restaurant was one of the best in town, however The Chef's Menu does not worth the money you pay. Some courses were ok, but the overwall wasn't good. I wouldn't mind paying £180 per person if the restaurant was unforgettable, however that was not the case. The... More

I couldn't figure out how to get in the restaurant but that was the fun of it! I won't tell, you'll see for yourself. I've been to Japan and it has very similar surroundings here, really magnificent interior and decor. I enjoyed the way all the staff shout Japanese things when people enter and leave the restaurant. All of the... More

So expensive it spoiled the whole evening - we had never before paid £300 for a light Japanese meal and will not be returning! Having eaten Japanese on every continent (except S. America) I promise you, this is not anything special (it just believes it is!). Polite, swift service, pleasant ambience, smart decor, comfortable; both the sushi and sashimi were... More

The entrance is irritatingly difficult to find but is well worth the effort. The food and service are hard to beat. Fusion perhaps best describes the menu. Cocktails and saki are also great.

We had the tasting menu and whilst it is a very very expensive restaurant it was quite simply the best meal I have ever had. Nothing more to say really.

Having eaten in various different Japanese resturants in London and the rest of the world, I can say that Umu is not of the same standard. The food was not horrible but wasn't amazing either, it was average. It was also extremely over priced, and I have had more enjoyable meals for less money. I would not complain about the... More

Staying in Mayfair

Neighborhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
