Not what it was

I initially dined here in 1976 on an early visit to London. Then it was the model of a traditional top English restaurant in London with staff who had worked there for years. This time it was not. Previously the dining room was on the first floor, a room with light, now it is a room on the ground... read more

We went to Simpsons on a celebratory weekend visit to London. It was Sunday evening and was not very busy.I asked what was the the chef special soup was and told that it was carrot which I did not find very appealing and I was offered the lobster which sounded just right. We were then offered a selection of brown or white... We wanted to meet friends in London for lunch and they booked a table at this restuarant. We met up and they took us there. The entrance looked rather daunting, quite "Private Club" like. We would not have wandered in off the street. Once inside we were made very welcome. Our coats were whisked off to the cloakroom and we... More

Friendly staff, very traditional location. Excellent roast beef carved at the table. Small portions of vegetables with my duck breast. Expensive wines - £12 for a glass of Sancerre rose from a bottle which had been opened for more than a day. Two main courses, two glasses of wine and a cup of the came to nearly £100 (including 12.5%... More

My husband asked my father for my hand whilst lunching at Simpsons. I like the old-fashioned way of service with the famous trolley with roasts of all kinds and the pudding trolley - oh heaven ....oh hell!!! Simpsons is true blue establishment dining and certainly worth a visit - I prefer lunch to dinner.

I disagree with some other recent posts about this restaurant. I was there with my husband on a Tuesday evening in February, for a pre-opera meal. We had never been before (as we live in Scotland), but had heard a lot about it, and we loved the whole experience. The setting and the food in this restaurant are unique, and... More

Monday lunchtime in February may not be the best time for any restaurant. It certainly wasn't last Monday at Simpsons in the Strand as we made up a maximum of a dozen in this epitome of British eating houses. We first lunched here some 42 years ago and have come back over the years not, admittedly, very often, but often... More

Enjoyed the high standard of cooking at reasonably affordable price. Traditional ambiance, service and interior decor with charm (in need of upgrade in places).. Definitely recommended for foodies and good wine connoisseurs!

Gosh, I hadn't been here in years and the years have not been kind to the old place, and the staff goes through the motions and the food is still very good but the furnishings, the walls themselves actually, are in need of a freshening. This place gets busy enough so... Hope it sticks around and gets a second (third,... More

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
