Old world charm

My wife and I had a pre theatre dinner here recently,so we probably didn't fully enjoy the experience. The "Divan" is a vast room and I'm sure with lots of diners it would have a wonderful atmosphere, but we were so early in the evening the place was almost empty. Having said all that we really... read more

My husband and I had had lunch there last Sunday. From start to finish the service was tremendous. ~The ambience and the old fashioned charm just added to the experience. The food was brilliant. I had the roast which was carved in front of me and my husband had the sea bass which had been cooked in what I believe... More

My American guest Margo and I had been trying to meet up for several years. When I was in New York, she was elsewhere and when she was in London she either had a mad schedule or I was busy. As we had a very strong mutual interest - contemporary silver (only British in my case) - we had a... More

One goes to Simpson's for the history and the legendary trolley beef, which it certainly delivers; but to receive these distinct pleasures, one must endure a certain amount of haughty (if not downright unfriendly) service and a really punishing amount of noise. We were four well-dressed and reasonably sophisticated seniors. We arrived exactly at the time of our 7:30 reservation.... More

I started going to Simpsons 40 years ago. My boss at the time rejected my expense claim for lunch as being beyond my pay grade. i was not deterred and continued to enjoy Roast Beef at Simpsons. Many years later, I was lucky enough to be a regular dinner guest with one of the Savoy Hotel Managers, who sadly has... More

I was taken to Simpson's for a pre-theatre dinner for my birthday. The restaurant is well located, elegant and beautiful. There is live piano playing during your meal in an unobtrusive way. The food was excellent - I had a pork main which gave my husband serious food envy. What sets Simpson's apart is the outstanding customer service. We were... More

We had Sunday dinner at this wonderful old restaurant. Of course, we ordered their signature dish of prime rib and Yorkshire pudding! The carver comes to your table with a silver trolley and you tell them how you want your meat cooked and they slice it thinly from the appropriate piece of beef on their cart. Excellent!

When I visited here in 1963, an extra helping of roast beef was a half-crown (1/8 of a £) and now it's £12, but still worth the price. The carver wanders around with the huge tray and Yorkshire Pudding can be had. There are other items on the menu, but for me, it's the RB every time. Next to the... More

Elegant dining next to Savoy Theatre in what used to be a Chess Club. Great service and very good food. This was our 30 th anniversary dinner, and exceeded our expectations. We were taken care of from the moment we arrived.

Simpson's started as a chess club in the 19th century, and the carved wood and beautiful ceilings march on with the beef carving trolleys with Yorkshire pudding, as well as very good seafood....the smoked Scottish salmon to start was excellent. It has that old London feeling. Always a tasty place for lunch. Immediately adjacent to the Savoy, thus also a... More

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
