A Lovely Roast

A visit to Simpsons is never complete unless you have a Simpson Roast it is well worth waiting for. My lady and I were invited to a literary afternoon which included lunch and wine we course went and thouroughly enjoyed it. Almost resigning myself to reluctantly dining in a fast'ish food joint, I literally stumbled into old world establishment and what a pleasant surprise awaited me. The restaurant is a real throw back in time and is both sophisticated and welcoming in equal measure. Dining out alone is not always fun, but here I comfortably melted into the surrounds, and over... Faded glory? Evaporated glory, more like.. Inattentive staff who appear more interested in clearing lunchtime service rather than creating a decent atmosphere. Food is good, but £53 per head for potted prawns, roast beef and Welsh Rarebit, excluding drinks, is pushing it. So seriously overpriced and not good value. Try the Gavroche for an altogether better experience.

This grand old restaurant retains all the old style that goes back almost 200 years - it started out life as a chess club and coffee house. The joints of meat are brought to the table on antique silver-domed trolleys and carved at the table according to how rare or well done you like your meat, with fresh gravy, excellent... More

Simpson's is up for sale and may soon cease to exist. After four of us dined there Sunday evening May 10, 2015, it became clear why. It is a hollow shell of its former self. Only the elegance of the room and the high prices remain. An ersatz maitre d' showed us to an end booth despite our desire to... More

Wonderful service from all those at Simpsons, despite a couple of hiccups, which they rectified with the minimum of fuss leaving us feeling very spoiled. The food is always of high quality and having the beef/lamb or other joints carved in front of you makes the experience all the better. When we did have a problem, with my main course,... More

By far the greater number of co-diners were Japanese or Americans and perhaps this is why Simpsons can get away with such showy but ultimately disappointing food. It's definitely not British or English cooking at its best. A starter of baked crab with a Parmesan crust was judged rather good; I ordered veal sweetbreads. Three thin small slices were so... More

This is the absolute for Englishmen who require old style class. Massive meat dishes served by waiters in full uniform. No " Hi Guys" here but " good afternoon" no frills, no flash, nothing too much trouble. A dress code that is enforced no matter how much the " jeans" cost. Just brilliant. Lunch started at 13..00hrs and ended at... More

Went for dinner last night and was not impressed. The food was just ok and the service was terrible. Simpsons was recommended by a tour guide. Went there wanting the whole prime rib trolley experience. The restaurant was not real busy and I couldn't understand the lack of good service. Spend a little more and dine at the Savoy!

Simpson's is a pre-theatre tradition, and it's rather sad for it to be a disappointment. Arrived in plenty of time for the set, pre-theatre 3-course meal, yet service took far too long. First the lobster bisque, which was fairly tasteless and bland. Followed by salmon in puff pastry (unsure why two seafoods in a row) which also held little appeal.... More

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
