Originally a small oyster bar, J Sheekey preserves an unstuffy and intimate air which has made it a West End favourite for over 100 years. Cosy up in a dark corner in one of this fish restaurant's wood-panelled interconnecting rooms and try not to gawp at the high-profile clientele. The seafood is fresh and delivered with flair, and there's an imaginative vegetarian menu, plus a few meat dishes for non-fish lovers. An unrivalled destination for London theatre-goers. J Sheekey's illustrious 100-year heritage is enhanced by the Oyster Bar just next door, an informal extension of this great London institution. Set around a horseshoe-shaped central dining bar, its wood-panelled walls are lined with photographs of 21st-century theatrical luminaries from John Hurt to Orlando Bloom. The finest seafood includes fresh oysters from West Mersea Island, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and south-west France, along with Shetland mussels and Dublin Bay prawns or caviar and crab. These are enjoyed with an excellent list of Champagnes and sparkling wines by a theatrical and foodie clientele. All fish is responsibly caught from sustainable sources.

Usually dining in the main restaurant, the new Spring Menu tempted us into the Oyster Bar. The first thing to note is that this part of Sheekey's is about Oysters (I guess the clue is in the name) so the focus is on the varied selection on offer. The other dishes available are mostly small plate sized and can be... More

Fantastic food and service, I would say these are the best oysters I have had in the UK by far. Well worth a visit I would go again for sure.

No matter how good the food could be, if the hostess is rude it spoils the experience. Following our order I stated that I would write a nice review in Tripadvisor she stated "we don't read reviews, we don't need them". I informed her "perhaps you don't but thousands of people do", she walked away in an arrogant manner. Getting... More

Visited in February for my wife's birthday and returned in April for a friend's 65th. Being the creature of habit that I am, I went for the fruit de mer again and had no regrets. The whelks weren't as large as we had in February but were nevertheless very good. As was just about everything else. No regrets about returning... More

From a 1 year old, through teens to 30s, 50s and 80s we covered the age spectrum. Fish and seafood is the order of the day here and being the sister of the Ivy safe rather than exotic is the order of the day. Service was excellent and attentive, and the food very enjoyable. The atmosphere was great for our... More

Not just a wonderful fish restaurant but also a great place for a refreshing glass of perfectly cooled white wine or Champagne at one of their al fresco tables on the pedestrian side street. We stopped there on a sunny April afternoon for a glass of Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2013 from Guy Allion and half a dozen West Mersea oysters.... More

This is still the best in Central London for fish. But my friends at Caprice Holldings you need to do 2 things. One is get some more waiters because they are stretched. Two is to place on the ceilings sound absorbing white wallpaper. The noise from happy customers is deafthening. Bar these 2 flaws, a excellent rating would have been... More
