Originally a small oyster bar, J Sheekey preserves an unstuffy and intimate air which has made it a West End favourite for over 100 years. Cosy up in a dark corner in one of this fish restaurant's wood-panelled interconnecting rooms and try not to gawp at the high-profile clientele. The seafood is fresh and delivered with flair, and there's an imaginative vegetarian menu, plus a few meat dishes for non-fish lovers. An unrivalled destination for London theatre-goers. J Sheekey's illustrious 100-year heritage is enhanced by the Oyster Bar just next door, an informal extension of this great London institution. Set around a horseshoe-shaped central dining bar, its wood-panelled walls are lined with photographs of 21st-century theatrical luminaries from John Hurt to Orlando Bloom. The finest seafood includes fresh oysters from West Mersea Island, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and south-west France, along with Shetland mussels and Dublin Bay prawns or caviar and crab. These are enjoyed with an excellent list of Champagnes and sparkling wines by a theatrical and foodie clientele. All fish is responsibly caught from sustainable sources.

It will be here forever

J Sheekey has stood the test of time. It thrives on its food, its atmosphere and just as importantly is staff. I have been 3 times in as many weeks and it will be a long time before its appeal fades

Two of us for an pre-theater dinner. Impeccable service right across the board - easily the best I've had in London - and the food was very good. Our salmon came out a bit too pink but was graciously given the requested "extra minute" and returned perfect. We were actually offered a replacement piece which was generous but unnecessary. Bit... I love this restaurant. The service is impeccable and the small rooms filled with happy diners give it an atmosphere all of its own. The food is great and a wonderful variety of shellfish and fish is on offer. The Cornish fish stew is so tasty but I tried the scallop and shrimp burger yesterday which was gorgeous and accompanied... More

I opted to eat in the informal oyster bar area and the fish was delicious. I tried a variety of oysters - Carlingford, West Mersea and Fin de Claire - and each was delicious and bursting with freshness. For mains I had the fish stew which came with a number of different white fish types, salmon, mussels and shellfish. Again,... More

This place was recommended by a friend who obviously hasn't eaten here for sometime. You need deep pockets to afford to eat the bland food they serve up here. I had a 16oz Dover sole which, for £40 it's not unreasonable to expect it to be excellent. Sadly it had no taste apart from the chargrilled scoring on the skin... More

I came here for dinner a while ago it was my first visit. I have to say the sea food is fantastic! Oysters were delicious & I also ordered mussels which were just as nice. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a special treat as it is pricey but worth every penny. I will return again! Recommended to all... More

This is by far my most favourite restaurant in London. The food is always perfect, the service is immaculate and it has managed to maintain its traditions whilst moving forward with the times.

If you like oysters and fresh fish in a cool atmosphere than this restaurant if for you. Located down an alley in the theatre district, this pub like atmosphere is so much more given the food quality. Great service too.

We had booked a post theatre table for 10.30pm but the show finished earlier than we had anticipated so we went along on the off chance of having a drink or hopefully being able to be seated early. When this usually happens you get greeted by staff who give the clear impression that you're inconveniencing them, but not here. Not... More

Absolutely loved this place, wonderful restaurant with great atmosphere, brilliant food and top class service from a very knowledgable team. The seafood is seriously top drawer and wines are delicious! Great place, can't wait to return.
