Description: Originally a small oyster bar, J Sheekey preserves an unstuffy and intimate air which has made it a West End favourite for over 100 years. Cosy up in a dark corner in one of this fish restaurant's wood-panelled interconnecting rooms and try not to gawp at the high-profile clientele. The seafood is fresh and delivered with flair, and there's an imaginative vegetarian menu, plus a few meat dishes for non-fish lovers. An unrivalled destination for London theatre-goers. J Sheekey's illustrious 100-year heritage is enhanced by the Oyster Bar just next door, an informal extension of this great London institution. Set around a horseshoe-shaped central dining bar, its wood-panelled walls are lined with photographs of 21st-century theatrical luminaries from John Hurt to Orlando Bloom. The finest seafood includes fresh oysters from West Mersea Island, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and south-west France, along with Shetland mussels and Dublin Bay prawns or caviar and crab. These are enjoyed with an excellent list of Champagnes and sparkling wines by a theatrical and foodie clientele. All fish is responsibly caught from sustainable sources.

The best seafood restaurant I have had the pleasure of enjoying. Our party of 8 would agree this was one of the best meal we had over a week of eating at several London restaurants. After having Dover Sole on two previous occasions, theirs was by far the best. They serve it as a 16oz or 22oz portion, the 16oz... More

Seats outside for theatreland watching. Wine v expensive at 7gbp a cheap glass. Oysters lovely as were the snacks but all tiny portions and way overpriced despite being cooked well. One for the tourists or rich londoners really.

Have had the opportunity to visit this restaurant on many occasions and I have got to say that it never fails. I have covered all the 'services' throughout the day; Lunch, Pre-Theatre, Dinner, Sunday Etc and I always come out with a smile on my face. Lose the idea that this is a swanky snobs hang out because it's so... More

If I lived in London I would eat here every day! Even the bar menu would give me enough choice to not get bored although at some point I will make a reservation for the restaurant. This is advertised as an oyster bar so as I have some ambivalence about oysters I was glad to see a wide range of... More

My wife and I love fish and were heading for another restaurant when we came across this one. We have passed it many times and never took notice of the menu but did notice that it was always busy outside. On taking a look at the menu we realised that everything we were looking for was here and more. Service... More

I have visited both the Restaurant section and the Oyster bar. The restaurant is absolutely superb, I entirely recommend it and read reviews below. This review is for my recent trip to J Sheekey Oyster Bar which is part of the same building. We booked a week in advance which is recommended. On arrival offered a booth or seats around... More

Just around the corner from tonight's play and terrific. Has the feel of Sardi's when Sardi's was Sardi's. I have a shrimp & scallop hanburger that nobody else seems to make. It's wonderful. Dale and the others had razor clams which she said was great. As both are "signature dishes" we were in and out quickly and everyone was happy.... More

Had a late lunch and decided to try this recommendation. The staff were very knowledgable on the oysters and the four of us started with a sample of three different ones. They were very fresh as we could them being shucked. The fish pie and fish stew were fantastic. We ate in the oyster bar but want to return to... More

I ate in the restaurant last January with friends and enjoyed it so much that I made a promise to myself to return and try the oyster bar, which this time I did again with a party of friends. The bar is loads of fun with comfortable seating and witty animated but very efficient waitstaff. We spotted Judy Dench (the... More
