Description: Originally a small oyster bar, J Sheekey preserves an unstuffy and intimate air which has made it a West End favourite for over 100 years. Cosy up in a dark corner in one of this fish restaurant's wood-panelled interconnecting rooms and try not to gawp at the high-profile clientele. The seafood is fresh and delivered with flair, and there's an imaginative vegetarian menu, plus a few meat dishes for non-fish lovers. An unrivalled destination for London theatre-goers. J Sheekey's illustrious 100-year heritage is enhanced by the Oyster Bar just next door, an informal extension of this great London institution. Set around a horseshoe-shaped central dining bar, its wood-panelled walls are lined with photographs of 21st-century theatrical luminaries from John Hurt to Orlando Bloom. The finest seafood includes fresh oysters from West Mersea Island, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and south-west France, along with Shetland mussels and Dublin Bay prawns or caviar and crab. These are enjoyed with an excellent list of Champagnes and sparkling wines by a theatrical and foodie clientele. All fish is responsibly caught from sustainable sources.

My friend and I have been here before and enjoy the charm and people watching as much as the food. I had a shrimp and scallop burger and she had haddock, chips and mushy peas. Both were delicious. For pudding we had a summer fruit almond tart and a vanilla cheesecake. Again delicious! The service was mostly good, with a... More

We ate here during a visit to London the food was tasty but over seasoned with too much salt. We were shocked to find that a cover charge and additional service charge had been included in the bill. Paying a cover charge (a flat fee paid for admission to a restaurant) is almost unheard of and really bumped up the... More

The atmosphere is so quaint and interesting. There was a C list celebrity across the dining room while we were there. Like other reviewers, I noticed the dress of guests was wide ranging. The food was excellent and the service was great. We had a later reservation, but never felt rushed.

After a hot walk from Covent Garden we found a cool and buzzing haven at JS. Welcome from all the staff was exceptional, not diminishing when we said we only wanted a light meal at the bar. Food is not cheap but the quality is great. We shared gazpacho with lobster in it followed by avocado and crab on toast... More

An interesting agglomeration of diners, ranging from those well attired in business dress to those in less than county club casual. The seafood was excellent, the salads reasonably good and the deserts terrific. The wine list is quite good, but, in my judgment, somewhat overpriced. There were a few relative values (but not many), such as a Gavi d Gavi... More

This could have been an excellent experience. The food is wonderful, if pricey. Our first server was terrific, but the head server (?) interrupted me in mid-oyster to ask if we were ready to order our entrees--almost unforgivable, and I sent her away, and then another server came by a minute later, clearing the oyster tray while my friend was... We had a lovely weekend lunch at J. Sheekey. Slightly hidden in a back alley next to Leicester Square tube station, the restaurant was very cosy and the staff were very friendly throughout. The food, I must say, is not particularly cheap but the quality is excellent and you are definitely paying for that. The scallop starter was good but... More

We were lucky - we walked in off the street and we were found a table outside (which we wanted), instantly, then we were left in peace to enjoy our drinks in the sun, people watching for a good half an hour before ordering. During this time we were offered several times lovely bread and given tit bits too with... More

We went for a pre theatre dinner and we were quite early so we sat in the wonderful oyster bar for a drink and then went through to our table when the restaurant opened. The place started filling up really quickly and a no point did we feel a lack of atmosphere that you often get when you go early.... More

Been here twice before and loved it but I couldn't have been more disappointed last night. The fresh crab starter was large but bland, the half pint prawns were average and the mixed fish for two was large but poor. The chips were terrible, cold and dry - they were honestly like oven chips. The highlight was the Parmesan zucchini... More
