Description: The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most...
The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most successful vegetarian restaurant. Founded and operated by brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, The Gate specialises in their uniquely personal style of cooking, one they characterise as Indo-Iraqi Jewish modulated by French and Italian influences. The brothers do some of their own foraging, particularly for wild mushrooms in season, and otherwise source the freshest local and organic produce for their dishes. With its high ceilings and large windows, the dining room is atmospheric and attractive, always lively day or night and, in summer, the courtyard adds a lovely space ready to be squabbled over by sun worshipping diners. Its rare to find vegetarians so well looked after so its no wonder that The Gate has been a veggie mecca for more than ten years now. Even the wine list features organic, vegetarian and vegan wines, a perfect complement to The Gate's vegetarian cuisine.

Surprisingly lacking in flavour

As a long time vegetarian i am always on the look out for a good veggie restaurant so was delighted to have found this place. Oddly located, the building is lovely, set behind a cute courtyard. It is wonderful to find a vegetarian restaurant that produces such imaginative and creative meals. This is true haute cuisine and I cannot recommend it highly enough. We had the starter meze which enabled us to try every one of their delicious dishes. Worth doing. We've already booked to go back.

The food was great! However the service was not! Lukewarm wine served. The waitress seemed put out that we would like it cold. We had to ask for the waitress to come over regarding our order. She was quite sullen. It detracted from what was otherwise a good experience. The 12.5 service charge should not have been added to our... More

The food was very good, and the dining room is large and spacious. However it is hard to find the restaurant and the food took ages to come.

We went here on a Monday evening, so the restaurant was fairly quiet. The service was spot on right from the start, with friendly and efficient staff. I had the potato chat as a starter and aubergine schnitzel as the main and both were delicious and had interesting flavours. Sadly I didn't have room left to try any of the... More

Great vegetarian food, shame the old paintings that used to be in this ex artist's loft now appear to have been removed, they were an intrinsic part of the atmosphere of the place. Great service, shame the tables are so closely packed together.

We visited the Gate Restaurant on Mother’s day to give my mum a better choice of food from the normal limited selection of vegetarian options. Being a non vegetarian myself I was hesitant, however the quality of the food and service was top notch. Have since recommended The Gate to a friend at work, and would definitely book a table... We went here for a family celebration - we are all vegans and fed up with not being able to go somewhere nice for dinner and having to precariously pick our way through a menu. The Gate offered us lots of choices and the waiting staff were very helpful with our enquiries. We will definitely be returning to this hidden... More

Found this restaurant, tucked away from the hustle an bustle of the busy high street, completely by chance whilst wandering around Hammersmith before a show at the Apollo. There was little to fault the food and the service and they also served up a pretty tasty selection of wine. The menu was varied and offered some interesting alternative's to the... More

The Gate is a restaurant I have been visiting for at least 20 years. A few years ago it switched to a more international fusion based menu similar to a local competitor Blah Blah Blah which has unfortunately disappeared The decor would have been racy in the 1970's - raw wooden blocks in the walls, rather plain tables and chairs...
