Description: The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most successful vegetarian restaurant. Founded and operated by brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, The Gate specialises in their uniquely personal style of cooking, one they characterise as Indo-Iraqi Jewish modulated by French and Italian influences. The brothers do some of their own foraging, particularly for wild mushrooms in season, and otherwise source the freshest local and organic produce for their dishes. With its high ceilings and large windows, the dining room is atmospheric and attractive, always lively day or night and, in summer, the courtyard adds a lovely space ready to be squabbled over by sun worshipping diners. Its rare to find vegetarians so well looked after so its no wonder that The Gate has been a veggie mecca for more than ten years now. Even the wine list features organic, vegetarian and vegan wines, a perfect complement to The Gate's vegetarian cuisine.

despite booking early was told on arrival I must complete within 1 hour yet waited 30 mins for fruit crumble which arrived cold, fruit uncooked, tasteless and dry, yet surrounded by lumpy custard when I had ordered vegan chantilly cream, so a further delay. each dish I tried was lacking in flavour due to the mingy, minuscule slither of sauce... Went here for my birthday meal with my other half. Not busy, probably 5 other tables. I've been vegetarian for 8 years and vegan for 3 of these. The menu wasn't impressive, not much there I wanted really. Skipped the starters due to lack of interest. Main also difficult to pick but went with the thai red curry. Perfectly fine... More

I visited the Islington branch of The Gate. Had the plantain fritters for a starter, which not only tasted great, but managed to do that thing where it makes you actually hungry for a main course! Ordered the vegan mushroom risotto, and was happily surprised by the intense flavours and creamy sauce. Tried the aubergine schnitzel and it tasted so... More

I wanted to try this place out for a while after eating at The Gate in Islington. I have to say i was quite dissapointed with the food I ordered. The wine was also very low quality... and it is not the most reasonably priced! Saying that, my friend was happy with the food she ordered and the service is... More

I've just got home from visiting this place, and I have to say what an experience! Wow! Booked last minute through open table and had a special request as it was my wife's birthday. The restaurant called me and were very accommodating and attentive throughout our entire stay - even though they had several other tables of four to tend... More

We were looking for somewhere to eat after the panto and found The Gate online and thought it looked worth a visit. We are not vegetarian but really enjoyed all the food we were served and the service was generally very good. The three cheese pie was excellent

We have been going to the Gate, both in Hammersmith and in Islington when it opened, for many, many years, since it first opened. Initially, when it was run by Adrian and Michael, it was the most fantastic restaurant, with good, imaginative food and charming, efficient service. However, since the management has been taken on by a professional manager, the... More

I had been here twice, once for dinner and the other for lunch. The natural ingredients made excellent dishes. On the first occasion, I booked a table for four. On arrival, I found that I was lucky to have made a booking as the restaurant was fully packed with patrons. The modern decor of the restaurant also made dining here... More

Very good and interesting food. Flavour pairings are well executed and dishes are satisfying. A bit on the expensive side and servings are not large, but the food is delicious and made with much attention to the preparation and plating details. A starter and main will leave you feeling like you've eaten well. Been twice in the last month, and... More

Booked this 2 months ago, had never been to this one, but really excited to try some good vegitarian food. So we arrived at 8 pm. Waited 5 mins to be seated and recognised. Sat on upper level, all very pleasant but too dark. Had to ask for candle, which came after a while. So it's Xmas with hubby, order... More
