Description: The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most successful vegetarian restaurant. Founded and operated by brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, The Gate specialises in their uniquely personal style of cooking, one they characterise as Indo-Iraqi Jewish modulated by French and Italian influences. The brothers do some of their own foraging, particularly for wild mushrooms in season, and otherwise source the freshest local and organic produce for their dishes. With its high ceilings and large windows, the dining room is atmospheric and attractive, always lively day or night and, in summer, the courtyard adds a lovely space ready to be squabbled over by sun worshipping diners. Its rare to find vegetarians so well looked after so its no wonder that The Gate has been a veggie mecca for more than ten years now. Even the wine list features organic, vegetarian and vegan wines, a perfect complement to The Gate's vegetarian cuisine.

My son and I found this lovely restaurant using Trip Advisor while wandering around Hammersmith. The location is in a quiet area by some council estates. Once through the entrance the courtyard is like an oasis. The restaurant walls are decorated with wood paneling and feels comfortable. The food, all vegetarian, is excellent. Everything on the menu is original and... More

I was taken here by a customer. I was not looking forward to it as I am not a big fan of vegetarian food. How wrong could I be!!!! The menu was varied and had lots of tempting things to eat. I had the Onion tart to start with which was very tasty. I then had the curry which was... More

Great food and relaxed atmosphere - just around the corner from the Apollo - so you will need to book on nights when the Apollos is showing something special.

The food here is excellent, it's entirely veggie or vegan, I'm a avid meateater but I didn't miss meat at all during this meal. The staff are friendly and efficient (however we went at a quiet time, not sure what they are like when the place fills up) and the food and drinks (fresh juice mixes) are delicious and well... The menu looked exciting, the place buzzing and noisy on a Saturday night, staff running round. Sadly in our case (4 of us) the wine we ordered straight away took ages to come and the service got steadily slower as time went on. The food was interesting but descriptions sometimes misleading eg "beetroot ravioli" turned out to be a filling... More

Had dinner here a few nights ago and it's one of the best meals out in a very long time! The food was creative, full of flavour, looked great and interesting. The kind of food that inspires you to try and re create it at home (I wish I was able to!)

I had dinner at The Gate with a friend on a Wednesday evening (19th Nov). As soon as we arrived we were greeted really warmly. I ordered the house white, which wasn't bad at all. Although our meal was a tad expensive, starters around £8 & mains around £15, it was really worth the money. The portions are modest but... More

I have eaten here a few times. I am vegetarian. The food is absolutely delicious. However, there is one major problem with it. The portions. Some dishes aren't too terrible, but unfortunately what I experienced last week is a typical example of my trips to the Gate. For starter I ordered the fried courgette flower. It was amazingly tasty, except... More

This was the first time I had ever eaten in a vegetarian restaurant. I am not a vegetarian, but was impressed with food I had, which was Thali for main course - a sort of Indian style selection, and very tasty. It was well presented and there was plenty of it. Pudding was also delicious, and though I've forgotten the... More

Arrived at 6:15; planned to eat before going round the corner to the Apollo at 7:50. Was told on arrival we had to give the table back at 8pm - which was fine. First course arrived at 7 pm and main course at 7:40 - giving as 10 minutes to eat and pay the bill. Lovely food - but would... More
