Description: The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most...
The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most successful vegetarian restaurant. Founded and operated by brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, The Gate specialises in their uniquely personal style of cooking, one they characterise as Indo-Iraqi Jewish modulated by French and Italian influences. The brothers do some of their own foraging, particularly for wild mushrooms in season, and otherwise source the freshest local and organic produce for their dishes. With its high ceilings and large windows, the dining room is atmospheric and attractive, always lively day or night and, in summer, the courtyard adds a lovely space ready to be squabbled over by sun worshipping diners. Its rare to find vegetarians so well looked after so its no wonder that The Gate has been a veggie mecca for more than ten years now. Even the wine list features organic, vegetarian and vegan wines, a perfect complement to The Gate's vegetarian cuisine.

Blown away!

A group of friends and I went to The Gate for birthday celebrations and wow! We all absolutely loved the food, which was the highlight. Heard about The Gate from a friend and as a vegetarian wanted to give it a try. Took my mum (also a vegetarian) for her birthday lunch. Food was absolutely beautiful and the service was great - unobtrusive yet helpful and friendly. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and would definitely go back. The polenta chips are a must!

We had very happy memories of The Gate as a vegetarian restaurant. So when we returned we saddened to find that the food was not of the quality we expected. Concentration on presentation appears to have made the quantity and quality to suffer. I left hungry.

I have wanted to go to this restaurant for years. Finally, as a birthday treat, we went on Friday evening. The menu was surprisingly unexciting. If you don't like mushrooms, you might struggle. That's probably an exaggeration, but that seemed to be the dominant theme. However, when our food arrived it was very tasty and visually attractive. Not big portions... More

I have visited this restaurant twice now and have both times been blown away by the food. the first time I visited was a Monday evening and the restaurant was pretty quiet as to be expected - I feel this worked in our favor as our waitress took the time to talk us through some options with wine and made... This vegetarian restaurant in the heart of North London was a true pleasure to visit. Every dish was a pleasure to look at as much as to eat and I was not the vegetarian in the group! Midweek lunchtime so was rather quiet. the service was attentive without being overly so. A must for all veggies are pleasure for this... More

Blown away by the food on offer here, everything was cooked to perfection, and such choice! It is so refreshing to find a restaurant offering such a variation of vegetarian/vegan dishes, all perfectly presented. The desserts were simply wonderful. Only negative would be the decor which is somewhat bland, cold and uninviting, and a bare white wall would benefit from... More

We were staying at the guesthouse next door, so it would have been silly to not come here, and I am so glad we did. The layout is simple, and the decor is clean and modern. There is a good drinks menu including some very nice teas and local beer, but the food is where this place shines. All the... More

We had booked a staff lunch for 9 people, following a fantastic experience a few weeks ago. When we arrived we were told that we were not able to have the £10 lunch special menu, but that we could choose from either the a la carte or set menu. This was supposedly to reduce the pressure on the kitchen. However... More

Table for 4 on a packed evening, of which 3 practicing vegetarians and one that just enjoyed great food, vegetarian or not. Presentation and variation is great though the menu is not vast. We were impressed with the same dishes done vegetarian or vegan with no fuss. It was my third visit to The Gate. The venue is a short... More
