Description: The Gate Restaurant in London's Hammersmith is the capital's most successful vegetarian restaurant. Founded and operated by brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, The Gate specialises in their uniquely personal style of cooking, one they characterise as Indo-Iraqi Jewish modulated by French and Italian influences. The brothers do some of their own foraging, particularly for wild mushrooms in season, and otherwise source the freshest local and organic produce for their dishes. With its high ceilings and large windows, the dining room is atmospheric and attractive, always lively day or night and, in summer, the courtyard adds a lovely space ready to be squabbled over by sun worshipping diners. Its rare to find vegetarians so well looked after so its no wonder that The Gate has been a veggie mecca for more than ten years now. Even the wine list features organic, vegetarian and vegan wines, a perfect complement to The Gate's vegetarian cuisine.

I took my vegetarian girlfriend to The Gate as a special birthday treat. I'll admit, for me it was more a gracious abstention from meat-eating than a genuine desire to visit a vegetarian restaurant. I'm carnivorous through and through. I was swiftly enlightened from my vegetarian ignorance, as the menu was mouth-watering to read. I wanted to order everything. The... More

Sadly , and not sure why, the lovely courtyard was closed on a beautiful evening. Too many tables upstairs, practically sitting with fellow diners. Poor acoustics, very noisy...zero atmosphere. As a veggie loved the menu, think I chose badly as the gnocchi wasn't "glazed in a sauce" more swimming in it. Fellow diners food seemed better presented. Two starters (small... More

Considering that they don't have to buy meat, I can't quite understand the incredibly high prices of The Gate. I enjoyed both meals I had there, especially the starters, however the bill is always a bit of a shock to the system...It was great to be able to take my vegetarian friend somewhere she loved, and the service is pretty... We ordered the "Mixed starters", which consisted of a selection of the various starters. Some of them very good (for instance the leek pie), some of them just OK. The waiter was really nice, but forgot some of our drink orders. The prices were maybe a bit on the pricey side.

I've been coming to The Gate for over ten years now, and it never disappoints. I've taken many a carnivore to The Gate, and they've agreed the good is far from the "vegetarian" norm. It's the kind of place you need to go wearing loose clothing so that you can enjoy plenty of their exquisite food, especially courgette flowers! I've... More

Nothing special, the food is good and the presentation is beautiful, B U T all the dishes are bloody expansive and just because this place seems to be very trendy. In London you can find a lot of better Vegetarian/Vegan restaurants, i'm vegan and i know how much that food costs (nothing compared to other ingredients). If you feel posh... More

Amazing food and fantastic service, I love this restaurant!! The menu is always great and the food has never disappointed. The restaurant itself is in a rather unusual location, but inside it is truly lovely. A real treat!!

I've been a customer at The Gate for many years both in its old and new reincarnations. I'm a very big fan. To their great credit they have maintained consistently high standards of food and service since 1989. Throw away any misconceptions and prejudices about vegetarian food. The Gate serves delicious, quality, fresh food that happens to be vegetarian. The... More

I had dinner at this place with my partner, the food is contemporary vegetarian. We visited whilst it was quite busy, the waitress managed to squeeze us in without much trouble and served us in a welcoming manner. We decided to have a few different starters and two different mains and just shared the food, we particularly enjoyed the cuisine... More

Dinner for two on a Saturday night. Nice atmosphere and surroundings. Pleasant staff. Very good tasty well-presented food at reasonable price. I'm not saying you could convert a veggie sceptic but I can't see how they wouldn't enjoy a meal here. Highly recommended.
