The Criterion is an elegant and beautiful restaurant in the heart of Piccadilly Circus. Originally opened in 1874, this romantic Grade II-listed restaurant has undergone a gentle restoration, adding warmth and comfort to a renowned fine dining venue. Regarded as the most spectacular dining room in London, The Criterion restaurant exudes timeless opulence. Sourcing the finest and freshest ingredients from the British Isles, Head Chef Artan Hasa has created a modern European menu that is both simple and luxurious. The grand surroundings of The Criterion also present an inviting setting for traditional afternoon tea. A selection of finger sandwiches, homemade cakes, scones and tarts are served alongside a choice of tea or a glass of Criterion's house Champagne. Live music performances every Friday and Saturday night from 7.30Pm add to the charming ambience, whilst the famous Long Bar entices diners to enjoy various cocktails and wines, alongside half-dozen oysters, in the comfort of red velvet seating. The only restaurant in London showcasing magical Neo-Byzantine design, The Criterion Restaurant is an alluring dining experience for you to discover.

Love Criterion!

My wife's family had booked a table at the restaurant for a family lunch. I cannot express how lovely the setting of the restaurant is, and it has such a rich history too! The food was amazing, and as was the wine. One of the best dining experiences in London, if not the world. A little pricey... read more

We came here after a pretty good bus tour of London that included a boat ride down the Thames. My sisters were eager to come here as they are big Downton Abbey fans. Apparently a scene for the show was filmed here. The room is lovely and the food and tea was just right. But two things really bugged me... More

Booked the Criterion for my mum's birthday lunch. Was not disappointed, went chose the set menu which was great value for money & they even came out with a birthday dessert with candles for my mum which was a lovely touch. The building itself is beautiful, very elegant which makes it a special experience.

Impeccable food and artistic presentation in the most elegant atmosphere. Semi-Formal dress is very much appreciated. Our concierge even had champagne waiting for us at the table.

The Criterion has the X Factor interior. Incredible ceiling decor and just a stunning big setting with plenty of history. We celebrated my birthday here and the staff were so helpful and welcoming. Champagne on arrival and a ginger beer for my 11 year old (in a champagne glass) They had really thought about those finishing touches. The set menu... More

A beautiful and atmospheric restaurant with delicious food, attentive staff and lovely wine. This was my first visit here with friends and it was wonderful. My dishes (feta cheese salad and chicken supreme) were excellent and filling. The décor is fascinating and I imagine at night even more atmospheric with the tiling on the ceiling reflecting low light. You forget... More

Took my husband here for his birthday as he is a massive fan of the vintage look. Was immediately impressed by the look and ambiance of the place, you really feel that you are somewhere very special. Outstanding venue, decor and ambience The meal and service were excellent but the table was so small that once the plates and cutlery were laid, there was very little space for anything else (wine, water etc). The restaurant policy seemed to be to cram as many tables in as possible, we were almost rubbing shoulders with the couple sitting on... More

Staying in St. James's

Neighborhood Profile
St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
