The first thing we noticed is that the staff are elegant and thin and quite a few customers are well padded (a generalisation, I admit). When you look at the menu you see that your wallet has to be well padded too. Starters £10 and mains £20? Not at the River Cafe. While you can economise with a pasta dish,... More

In the evenings the River Café has a rigid policy of two seatings, seven or nine pm. For a celebration dinner, we elected for the nine o’clock option. Despite arriving on the dot of nine, we weren’t seated for twenty minutes, and it was maybe another twenty minutes before our starters were on the table. In the meantime the restaurant... More

Went to River Cafe with high expectations and they delivered without doubt. Liked the setting (very relaxed) and the menu. That said, I did find the prices quite steep.

Having cooked from their ubiquitous books many times and planned for so long to go, I set out for lunch trepidatiously! Would this much loved institution live up to my expectations! A warm welcome (service was terrific throughout) and two perfect bellini's eased any concerns. A beautiful sunny day allowed us to take a terrace table in the sunshine, which... More

We have been to the River Cafe for a number of special occasions over the last 10+ years, and each time worry that our next experience won't live up to the excellence of our previous visits. As always, we needn't have worried, our recent lunch was fantastic, with great food, service in a very relaxed atmosphere (we booked the second... More

Service was excellent however the food was below expectations.Had the crab to start, which was okay but didn't blow me away. Followed this with the scallop risotto which was a major disappointment and certainly didn't warrant the price associated with it. The main course (steak) was much better but again at 40 quid a go, it didn't do enough for... More

We recently visited the River Café for a friend's birthday and what a lovely experience! Food, service and ambiance were top quality. I had calamari for starter and then steak for main - both amazing flavours! Looking at the long bar is an experience in itself! It was a warm evening so the glass doors were open on to the... More

Did not want a Premier Inn breakfast so walked round the corner to this cafe opposite the Putney Bridge Tube Station. A warm welcome, two bacon sandwiches and fabulous coffee later we vowed to return again. Really fantastic value. Wished I had been the area for the lunch special.

My first trip to River Cafe after a friend who is in love with their book, not to mention the history of the restaurant was simply one of the best (though also one of the most expensive) lunches I've ever had. With a lovely view out over the Thames, a lovely lawn and comfortable outside chairs the atmosphere away from... More
