This restaurant is one which we have been meaning to visit for quite a while (we've lived in Balham for nearly 2 years!). So last night we visited for my boyfriends birthday. The staff were so welcoming, really friendly and provided great recommendations. The food was delicious! The thali approach to ordering food is great as you get to try... More

I'd never tried Sri Lankan food before and thoroughly enjoyed the way in which virgin diners are introduced to the cuisine. The menu is written in a light-hearted and unintimidating manner, encouraging customers to try something new. It recommends ordering a variety of mini "tapas-style" dishes to enable you to sample a range of different meals. This was a fun... More

Seduced by the web page to expect something ethnically authentic and reasonable portions this was a depressing experience. There is nothing remotely Sri Lankan about this "trendy" bistro. The menu has few Sri Lankan dishes and those that there are do not taste as they should. This is Sri lankan cooking massacred to appeal to a palate that does not... More

My favourite restaurant in Balham - the food was very tasty, though you definitely pay for it (for two people, one course each and one beer each, it came to over £40 in total). It was my first time eating Sri Lankan food and the waitstaff was very knowledgeable - they made some excellent recommendations in terms of dishes and... More

Pleasant enough little restaurant. The menu showed a bit of imagination and food was reasonable quality. Main dishes were expensive at around £16 each but that included rice and a little pot each of mango chutney and raita. Side salads at about £4 seemed really expensive as they came in tiny little metal dishes.

This is a fab place. Contemporary decor , great staff and the food and service was excellent. They recommend you choose around 6 dishes between you but we couldnt decide and so went for their suggested set meal and werent disappointed ! It was all lovely and with 2 bottles of wine and a drink at the bar the total... More

Hop and Spice is probably my favourite restaurant of all time, and I've been to a lot. It has consistently astounding food at very reasonable prices, a great relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and most importantly a shot glass of smarties with your bill. The menu is extensive and everything is super-tasty and almost oil-free. I find it extremely difficult not... More

Always welcomed with a beaming smile and a pat before being treated to consistently amazing food. It doesn't have huge amounts of salt in leaving you gagging all night and if you like a bit of heat get any of the devilled dishes. Also recommend the aubergine. Hard to pick individual dishes out when they're all amazing. First delivery from... More

We walked into Hop and Spice on Saturday night and were a bit surprised that the place was so quiet. With only three tables occupied, it was in stark contrast to the other, surrounding restaurants, but we really fancied giving this place a try so we asked for a table for two. My partner pointed at a free table near... More

This is easily the best place for a curry in Balham, partly because it's so unique - the Sri Lankan curries are really different and the thali options let you choose several to try in any one meal. Great place, we come here again and again and have never been disappointed. Only thing missing is some background music to give... More
