The food was ok, though not outstanding, and I appreciated it was opened late and the staff was nice, but the bill was sort of expensive for the quality.
Don't expect The River Cafe or Jamie's Italian. The only concession to trendiness is a 'Focaccia' that is actually a disc of pizza dough with rosemary and garlic. Bloomin' lovely though, as was the immense dish of lasagne verde, that was creamy, meaty and so comforting. We found the service wrm and friendly. All in all, an old fashioned eating... More
What a delightful find! My group of five walked over from Montague on the Gardens. When the extensive menu didn't provide anything of interest for my mother-in-law, the chef graciously accommodated a special request. The service was attentive and friendly. The food rocked!
I'm so sorry that I didn't discover this fantastic place before! It's like being in Rome! Massive portions, delicious homecooked food, very reasonably priced as well. Service is really great too, very italian! Highly reccomended!
When it comes to executing the treasured dishes of Italy, one can find some of the best chefs in many an Italian Restaurant in and around London. Il Fornello in Southampton Row is one of the most popular offering small or large dishes, very conducive to sharing. We were seated near a window giving us ample view of the movement... More
Starter poor, main very average, dessert - no idea since we weren't offered one, nor coffee. Our waitress preferred to spend around 25 mins talking to the people on the next table who were clearly friends of hers. Easily the worst service i have had in a very long time.
I first came to Il Fornello in 1976, when I was a student. In the next 5 years, my pal and I visited regularly as it was always cheap and cheerful with tasty food. So, Fast Forward to 2013, and my pal and I decided to re-visit on the spur of the moment, taking my (grown up) daughters with us.... More
Visited early on a Friday evening after an exhibition at the British Museum. Very friendly greeting, quick arrival of menus and subsequently our main courses, generous platefuls of an excellent saltimbocca, huge sea bass and tasty chicken dish. House red wine very acceptable, white a bit underwhelming. However, after removal of the empty plates, we were ignored. Practically had to... More
We decided to try Il Fornello because it was within walking distance of our stay. This was a great restaurant. Our server was very attentive and the food was very well prepared. The calamari was good, as were the pasta dishes were ordered.
This restaurant is a hidden gem! On a very busy street surrounded by other restaurants, coffee shops and such like. We happened across it looking for a tasty meal before getting the train home after a weekend in London. Me and my partner both ordered a simple cheese pizza and it was amazing! The best pizza i've eaten in a... More
