The Square restaurant in London's ultra-smart Mayfair has four right angles: great food, wines, service, and location. The dining room is a refined space where you can seal a deal, celebrate a triumph, or simply dine incredibly well. Chef Patron Philip Howard has earned a pair of Michelin stars for his unique French-inspired haute cuisine using impeccable ingredients to create dishes capable of both gossamer elegance and vivid boldness all in the same bite. Everything is superb, though we particularly recommend the herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Square's wine list (wine bible, really) runs to 80 pages of the world's finest.

Each wine is introduced by the sommelier who is unpretentious but knowledgeable. Overall the differentiator here is the service which hits exactly the right note: attentive without being intrusive, completely lacking in arrogance, friendly without... More

Booked a set lunch menu at The Square for my birthday. Service was impeccable from the start as you would expect. The food came in decent sized portions snd as always my favourite was dessert. Anything with popping candy will win me over! My understanding is that they change the set menu everyday so you never know what you might... More

Langoustine to start and beef to follow were excellent, the former delicate but wonderful flavour while the latter, which I rarely order outside of a steakhouse, had terrific flavour. The dessert (the soufflé) I thought was light and summery but somehow didn't quite push my button. The service was professional, welcoming and helpful but there were VERY long breaks between... We had the set lunch menu. Limited choice. Both of us had the chicken wings as starter but thought the skin should be more crispy. I had the plaice as main and my husband had the duck. You can't find any fault with the plaice it was very tasty. We thought again the duck skin could be more crispy. Portion... More

We have been to La Trompette in Chiswick a number of times and have always enjoyed the experience. We thought we would like to see what the two star version would be like and we were not disappointed. There is a very limited choice on the set lunch menu but don't let that put you off. The quality of the... More

This was a birthday treat and was such a lovely meal. We were treated so well and even given a quick tour of the kitchen! The food, as you would expect, was outstanding and we enjoyed the whole experience. Worth every penny!

I went there on the 21st of July (my birthday). Upon entering the restaurant the restaurant manager took our coats and new it was my birthday ( they must of done a debrief beforehand) and had us sit down with ease.We were given the menu quickly and the sommelier came over and asked for drinks. After the drink order were... More

My family had the truffle set menu, which was really lovely. They were extremely accommodating as two of us are pescatarians, and one doesn't eat dairy! So we made it very difficult for the chefs, but they found no problem at all and assured us it would be fine - which not a lot of Michelin restaurants do. Apart from... More

This is the second time we've been to this restaurant and again was left extremely impressed by the food and service. As before, we opted for the tasting menu with wines. The crab dish was easily the standout (as was the langoustine dish last time out). I love this place because although it is two star, there is a lack... More

My wife and I had lunch here for my 30th birthday, having had it recommended by David Everitt-Matthias of the incomparably fantastic Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham. Ever course was flawlessly executed; a fascinating take on modern European but with subtle Asian influences (e.g. a lamb ravioli sat in a lamb broth with a very rich, deep seaweed base -... More

Staying in Mayfair

Neighborhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
