The Square restaurant in London's ultra-smart Mayfair has four right angles: great food, wines, service, and location. The dining room is a refined space where you can seal a deal, celebrate a triumph, or simply dine incredibly well. Chef Patron Philip Howard has earned a pair of Michelin stars for his unique French-inspired haute cuisine using impeccable ingredients to create dishes capable of both gossamer elegance and vivid boldness all in the same bite. Everything is superb, though we particularly recommend the herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Square's wine list (wine bible, really) runs to 80 pages of the world's finest.

We booked The Square to have the tasting menu along with their recommended wines, to celebrate my 40th birthday. My partner and I arrived at our spacious table at 7.30 pm on a Monday evening and were served by the knowledgable and friendly front of house staff. We felt completely unhurried all evening and didn't leave the restaurant until after... More

I recently had the opportunity to attend a gourmet dinner for 18 in the private dining room at The Square and came to see why this Mayfair favorite has earned such a high reputation. The dinner was well balanced, well cooked and the wines served well matched to each course. The staff were competent and enthusiastic and the professionalism of... More

Last evening two of us hosted an important business dinner at The Square. Shame that the two hosts were female, we received very poor service, little attention from the waiters, manager, etc. Drinks for the table were drip fed to us, at one point we had to scream EXCUSE ME in the direction of the wait staff, all this and... Wasn't our first choice for the night but due to a leak in the first choice we booked here. When the starters came out after over an hour and a half, in which time we had little nibbles prepared by the chef, they were fine. Main course came soon after and were terrible. My fish, a meaty fish at the... More

We had a voucher given to us for my birthday and went for the 3 course set lunch menu at £37.50 per head. They greeted me with happy birthday on arrival. Typically french in that the presentation of the food was artistic but the portions were miniscule. However, having said that every mouthful was an amazing taste sensation, from the... More

I think i started a previous review by saying 'but i had a wonderful evening' and returning to The Square, I did, i really did. The thing is somehow i wasn't wowed like last time. One of us might be getting jaded. Look, it's probably me. The crab lasagna was great, maybe a tad cool. The lamb delicious and the... More

we had high expectations, went for the tasting menu and we were disappointed. the menu was too heavy! we have had tasting menus in other fine restaurants and they are usually designed in a way to be easy to go down. we left the place and when got home i got really sick and had to spend the night in... WE had dinner in the private dining room which I thought looked rather functional, and could have done with some flowers on the table and the blackboard on the wall could have been covered up when not being used for a corporate event. However the food was delicious. The canapes were mouthfuls of joy. Our starters seem to take an... More

Ate here recently and thought the food and service was absolutely faultless. It's difficult to find any criticism other than perhaps there's not much wow factor with the food but that being said everything I ate was delicious and perfectly cooked. This is a proper 2 star restaurant that deserves the accolade unlike the hugely disappointing Marcus waring restaurant.

Staying in Mayfair

Neighborhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
