When I ventured in to The English Restaurant, next to Spitalfield Market, the visual appeal was immediate, a rare treat of comfortable and traditional craftmanship in keeping with the historic setting and historic building. The staff's warm welcome, and subsequently their friendly service, made me feel at home. The proprietors have created a unique setting and are, apparently, the sole... More

I have been to this restaurant for both breakfast and dinner and enjoyed the experience on both occasions. We sat in the wooden booths which had an intimate feel and the food was very good. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable.

Had dinner here recently. Good quality and nicely served. Interesting cask ale to drink. Pleasant staff in a quirky building. Went back for breakfast next morning and were very happy with choice and quality. Lovely bloomer bread and sausages.

We went for breakfast and were disappointed. The service was desultory and many of the food items were warm rather than hot. If the server had asked us how our food was we would have told them, so we will let this review do the job. There are plenty of other places in the area.

The food was good, not great. They did make an effort to cook my steak as asked (medium, pink with no blood) and got it spot on but the rib eye steak was not exactly melt in the mouth by any extent. The chips were far too hard (perhaps reheated), had little flavour and if I was going to be... More

I've been here the The English Restaurant a few times, always without a reservation, and it has been consistently terrific food. It's the stuff I imagine Jane Grigson might cook at home: seasonal asparagus with poached egg and hollandaise, mackerel pate, rabbit taurine, authentic English cooking always well done. However, it has a far more impressive wine cellar and it's... More

Quality food and lovely atmosphere with live jazz band. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. Perfect for eating in a group. We found this place by chance and I will certainly come back.

Lovely restaurant with little booths, looks antique, very appropriate to its Spitalfields setting. I had a vegetarian dish which looked great (Pan Haggerty with rainbow chard and confit peppers) and consisted of dauphinoise-type potatoes atop the peppers, and a coronet of chard adorning the pan haggerty. I do feel it was a little lacking in the taste department - not... More

Met up with my best friend for a catch up on life. It was busy Sunday and I arrived early only to be greeted with one of the best smiles I have received in "ages". Sat at my alcove table awaiting my friend.pondered the menu/wine list. She arrived and we indulged ourselves with oysters, roast of the day with lovely vegetables... More
