Really disappointed with The Samling Hotel. We went for afternoon tea. no sandwiches just half a slice of bread with the crust still on with a choice of salmon, egg, ham and cucumber. the cakes were ok but the scones were stale.Service very mediocre. We just didn't feel welcome at all. We had to ask for more tea and coffee. We never saw... More

We were staying at the Samling for two nights on a dinner bed and breakfast package. The two 3 course dinners were great. We had a pre dinner drink and canapés in the lounge before, then into the dining room for dinner. Amusee bouche-guinea fowl terrine, truffle oil infused croutons, caviar and greens. Very pleasant. Appetisers- steak tartar with a... More

We came here for dinner as non-residents on a lovely summer evening. We were shown to the lounge for pre dinner drinks and canapés whereupon we both opted for the tasting menu. From the moment we were shown to our table it was surprise after surprise. Our table had a beautiful view of the lake and the surrounding fells. Our... More

Wonderful setting and building; very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable service; good wines; and lovely home-baked breads. But the food on the lunch-time tasting menu wasn't up to my expectations, especially for the price. Some of the flavours were more harsh than interesting (eg overpoweringly burnt onion powder); some combinations didn't work (eg liquidised radish with excessive added sugar - far... More

Myself and my partner visited for afternoon tea. We had large expectations following its allocation of its first Michelin star last year, but yet were left severely disappointed. The service was very mediocre, we felt rather neglected at times and no where near the standards that were expected. The food also matched this. The sandwiches were very very average, crusts... More

lovely location and very nice staff, great selection of teas to choose from, however, sandwiches very disappointing, bread dry and crusts left on, its hard to eat a slice of bread with a slice of ham on it delicately! It would have been much nicer if the sandwiches were cut up so that you could pick it up and eat... More

Enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea at the Samling last month with a friend. It was very quiet which was nice from our point of view and we had a relaxing afternoon in the lounge, taking our time. The sandwiches were delicious, albeit surprisingly simple! Cakes were wonderful and the tea assortment was extremely varied, with lots of options. We were... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our tasting menu the only downside was the main course which was not our favourite but overall we loved ever other course, from the canopies to the petite fours. Definitely would go back

Stunning views and gardens, slightly shabby interior, one Michelin star so high expectations for afternoon tea. The reality, apart from the beautifully presented open sandwiches and a good selection of teas, was disappointing. Only one small scone each, followed by an oversweet 'baked' yoghurt and selection of miniscule cakes. The star was obviously not awarded for baking. That said, the... More
