A beautiful pub with even more beautiful surroundings, however completely spoiled with badly kept real ale and shockingly rude staff. On approaching the bar, there was an elderly lady trying to place a food order, however the lady on the bar wouldn't take the order as she didn't remember to take note of her table number! The customer pointed to... More

Today my friend and I visited this hotel. Whilst other customers were being served food we asked for two bowls of chips but were told we were too late to order...at 2.30pm? Ten minutes later six customers at a table adjacent to us were served with six meals...all with chips! Why could you not have made 2 extra plates of... More

I have been coming to the Sun for about 20 years and it used to be my favourite pub ever...and as a hillwalking real ale lover it had very stiff competition. It used to have a cosy bar with a fantastically warm and welcoming atmosphere helped by friendly staff and having stayed here can also vouch for great accommodation and... More

Our feelings about The Sun are as mixed as the recent reviews. We stayed only a stone's throw from it's front door for a week in mid August but only eat there once after a disappointing Sunday roast; we ate in the evening and the roast potatoes were virtually inedible after being re-heated from earlier in the day. The venue... More

Offering good pub grub along with excellent real ale selection. Just what you need after a day on the fells.

This was a busy pub, but the food was worth the wait. Great atmosphere and good selection of beer/ale/cider on tap

This bar has to be one of Coniston's best kept secrets. Tucked up on the hill with great views of the surrounding hills from the terrace outside, the bar is full of old oak beams and exposed Lakeland slate walls. They offer the best range of real ales you can hope to find, many of them from local microbreweries. I... More

We've not been here for years and were very disappointed. Beer WAS nicely kept I'm told but the coffee described as a latte had not seen any milk and the steak pie had good meat but inedible pastry and poor chips. We won't go beyond a drink again. The conservatory area leaks too!!

The Sun has been a family favourite for many years of visits to Coniston. The combination of good food, Bluebird bitter and the poignancy of its association with Donald Campbell made it an essential part of our holidays. Our visit this week was very disappointing. The steak pie and fish and chips were virtually uneatable and the fact that we... More

"Fresh food - best in the village. Up the hill and well worth the walk!" Well the sign at the bottom of the road to the Sun Hotel (see photo) succeeded in persuading us! Up the hill we trudged anticipating the best food and local beers. We sat outside in the sunshine. That was enjoyable. The views are lovely. The... More
