Delicious food, awful decor

My wife and I and our 2 sons aged 8 and 5 popped in here for an evening meal during our half term holidays in the Lake District. Food was really excellent but let down a bit by the average service and the awful decor. They have a very strange vinyl carpet which is badly stained and sticks to your... read more

Great venue lovely food not expensive and plenty of room AND you didn't have to pre- book like some places in this town. We were soaked to the skin and enjoyed a good hot curry to warm us up. It was just perfect- well Donne team

We fancied a curry so decided to try a takeaway from here. Couldn't get a signal on mobile phone so couldn't look at the reviews, which was a pity as we would have saved £20 plus on a meal of which most went into the bin. The two tiny vegetable samosas were filled with what could only be described as... More

This was the first restaurant we used whilst staying in Ambleside and we fancied a curry and came across this place. Thankfully we didn't see the reviews before we went as it was a stir of the moment thing. Have to say that the food was very good, really enjoyed it as we haven't had a decent Indian in a... More

Food was good. The attitude of staff was nasty. 4 adults should order at least 4 dishes from main course else he cannot justify the table given to us. We never heard such a ridiculous blabber. As everyone was hungry we did not walk away. When we ask to pack the remaining food, an instant reply came saying they are... More

Spice of Bengal is the only Indian restaurant in Ambleside, and as we fancied a curry we chose to eat here despite the average reviews. On a busy Saturday night the atmosphere was rather chaotic, with waiters literally running around! Service was slow but when the food did arrive it was surprisingly delicious and good value too. Toilets and general... More

Not bad, just not stand out. There was an obligatory hair in my curry, but aside from that, there was nothing wrong with anything, I've clearly just got high expectations.

Whilst the rest of the family enjoyed the meal. Both the Tandoori Duck starter and mixed Tandoori main course were undoubtedly burnt. The service was also unattentive, overall a disappointng experience. I would never return which is a shame as it is the only Indian I could find in Ambleside and I a lover of Indian food.

We ate at the spice of Bengal as it was the only place still open in Ambleside we could find. In fairness the food was fine- not the best curry I have had but not the worst. The off putting thing is definitely the fact the restaurant is really run down. The toilet was dirty and the carpets were filthy.... More

We love eating out at Indian restaurants, and so we decided to try this restaurant while we were enjoying a weekend away in Ambleside. We ordered a starter to share which was lovely! Then we each had a curry both of these were really nice. There was a very relaxing atmosphere in the restaurant. We would definitely come back here:)
