Excellent food, good value but needs some TLC

Popped in to the Spice of Bengal for an evening meal having just climbed Scafell Pike and although it was early evening, the place as pretty busy. The initial impressions at the reception area are favourable, but once seated, it is pretty obvious that the place needs a refit. The carpet was very... read more

Real fancied some spicy food so despite the mixed reviews on trip advisor decided to give it a go. First impressions were not great, dirty salt mill on the table, staff polite but quiet, very sticky floor and empty restaurant (it was 6 o'clock). However, we soon began to relax and found the service to be prompt and friendly. Food... More

Tikka masala was lovely but Korma was disappointing. Could do with a make over inside to give it an extra star.

We only popped in for a takeaway and were clearly not welcomed despite the place being empty. The carpets were worn and sticky, the toilets unhygienic. The staff (especially the younger members) were surly and unhelpful and the food very pedestrian. Asking for poppadums while waiting for a beer seemed to be a big inconvenience to the establishment and even... More

Food was not good, the steps going down to the toilets were disgusting and sticky under foot and only one toilet this was disgusting too. The main carpet in the restaurant was stained and also sticky under foot. Won't be going here again. If this is what...... everyone can see........What is the kitchen going to be like ????? NOT GOOD

Found the food tasty and the service relaxed. We have been twice here and enjoyed it both times. I would happily go back another time!

Visited here on a Saturday night, it was fairly quiet when we arrived (18:45) but got quite busy as the evening progressed, we had poppadoms to start, them I had Chicken Tikka Dupiaza while my wife had her usual Chicken Tikka, we shared a rice and a portion of Bombay aloo and also a peshwari naan. Both meals were very... More

The only reason this restaurant is still open is due to the fact that 99% of customers are holidaymakers and they don't depend on them coming back again. I've eaten in many many Indian restaurants but never had I experienced anything so disgusting as the slop I received from the 'Spice of Bengal'. There was certainly nothing 'Spicy' about it!!!!!...
