Seriously good food in dull surroundings

The restaurant at the Abode Hotel is solid, comfortable and dull. The floor is stained oak. The tables are too dark stained wood. The chairs are brown. It’s spacious but there isn’t space to walk between the tables. For starters, I had Loch Duart salmon with water cress soup and fried capers... read more

I went their with my girlfriend during Lunch time and we had a wonderful time. We had a taster menu and we both were very pleased with the dishes. The dishes were verye exciting and beautiful to look at, the flavors were great and the service was very good too. Very satisfied andthis is the best and most sophisticated place... More

Michael Caines no longer has influence here and it shows. No reasonably priced set lunch, portions which surely can't get any smaller and even the bread is charged as an extra. This used to be a welcome addition to the Canterbury dining scene. It has lost the edge it had over competitors and if one has the time to search... More

We ate at the County Restaurant a week ago and we can honestly say it was the best meal we have had for a long time. It equals very good restaurants in London. The food was presented so beautifully; it was certainly a delight to the eye, followed by a delight to the tastebuds!! The service was impressive and the... More

Still the best food in Canterbury, on its day. The tasting menu with matching wine was sublime: highlight being the most beautifully cooked cod which I remembered for days afterwards. Complimentary champagne and a birthday dessert. A very special evening. Ask for table one if you're a couple.

Hotel with a restaurant attached? I’m never really sure; I’ve had too many disappointments for that one to be repeated often. So Abode was an off chance, one of those try it out and see how it goes Saturday lunchtime sort of things. We tried it out, and it went so well we have returned regularly, sometimes even during the... More

We had a delicious meal here celebrating a friend's b'day. The starters were amazing- beautifully presented - my crab starter looked almost too pretty to eat! My daughter's quail was mouthwatering. My son's beef and asparagus tasted spectacular. My only criticism was that the lamb main was ordinary. The desserts however, were all top notch they looked and both tasted... More

What do you expect from a £55 a head tasting menu? Something a bit special. Reassured culinary mastery. Waiters that are not just attentive, but know where each bit of the food came from. A sense of occasion and a connection with the food and its process of construction. For this kind of money I want to know that the... More

Ate there as part of a stay and eat deal. Tasty food, though perhaps could have been larger portions.

We had the pre theatre meal, which seems like excellent value, but I do somewhat agree with a previous reviewer. By the time you add the wine, water, bread, coffee and one side dish, the bill wasn't far off £90! The food was excellent, and whilst I recognise it's fine dining, it was incredibly small.
