Nice on a hot day

Nice old pub situated by the river, lovely outdoors area out the front of the pub and to the side, nice seating area available. Pub does a good range of drinks although it's fairly pricey. Didn't eat here but the food looked good. Staff could be more friendly but we're ok. Inside area is nice... read more

Spied a sign advertising Daura beer as I entered the pub so promptly ordered a bottle. Was delighted to find that gluten free bread was available to accompany my delicious crab salad, then delighted a second time when I discovered it was betina gluten free bread. I asked our waitress where they sourced it as I had only seen it... More

Having not visited Hertford for many years we were delighted to find The Old Barge, we ordered 'door step sandwiches' not being sure what would arrive. We were not disappointed when two of the largest sandwiches, brie and grape for me and tuna and mayo arrived! It reminded me of older time when my mother who could not cut bread... More

We travelled to this restaurant to eat outside and look over the river. Unfortunately the river is obscured from the outside eating area by a large hedge. However there are good views if you eat inside. The food was excellent and being a free house there is a good range of beers. We did find the wine expensive but I... More

Hadn't been for several years and hoped would be as good as before..not disappointed. It was about 4pm on a sunday and they'd sold out of roasts but told us straight away and given the time we weren't surprised and was still plenty of choice. We were starving and the beef burger texan style and veg burger parisian style in... More

the burgers here are so good, i haven't found another place like it that compares! it's like Christmas in your mouth. Meat Christmas! the selection of ales and cider is also good. they have a cosy fire in the winter months and in the summer you can sit by the river with a cold cider and watch the ducks go... More

Situated on Folley Island this pub is full of character. It has featured in an episode of Inspector Morse and served Princess Diana when she visited Barnados. An array of ducks and swans swim in the waterways around the pub. The pub is an attractive proposition with good food and a vast array of beverages. We were lucky to have... More

Visited with my husband and brother in law for a Sunday lunch. We've visited the pub for sandwiches before (which were lovely) so thought we'd try for a bigger meal. The pub overall is warm and the staff friendly. The menu, albeit burger-focused, offered a few main meals. We opted for the roast beef. Unfortunately this was the wrong choice.... More

Hi Kate, Thanks for your many positive comments about the pub. Apologies that your roast dinner was disappointing. I can assure you that this is not normally the case! Please, if you do come by again, make yourself known to me and we will be happy to get you a complimentary meal. I notice that the 2 puddings you opted... More

Lovely pub, nice warm fire, perfect setting. Staff are friendly but there are never enough, always find that we are waiting a long time to be served. We ordered food (have eaten here a couple of times) and each time we're disappointed. Too much frozen and not enough fresh prepared food. I always feel disappointed when I cook a better... More

Hi, Sorry to read of your disappointment. Our staffing levels are based on how many bookings we have, the weather forecast and a general level of expected custom, all of which are somewhat unpredictable so sometimes we don't get it right! Thank you for the comments on how nice the staff and pub are. I would be interested to know... More

I enjoy the Old Barge and often visit for lunch when in Hartford. It is so nice to get away from the busy shopping area and the noisier pubs / restaurants. Even when busy the pub has a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are great, friendly and helpful. There is a good selection of beers to choice from and a pretty... More
