On the doorstep of the historic town of Hertford, The Whistling Duck is a unique dining experience, complete with an A La Carte restaurant, lounge bar and tranquil riverside terrace. You'll find us tucked away on the banks of the meandering River Lea, overlooking the charming Hertfordshire countryside. Head Chef Marlon Erne and his talented team craft a seasonal menu of Modern British cuisine, full of innovative dishes and outstanding produce. Marlon's training in the Philippines and love of full Asian flavours also makes a feisty appearance in a special dish or two. Whether you're joining us for a relaxed lunch, business meeting, evening of fine food or a chilled glass of Prosecco on the terrace, we look forward to offering you a warm welcome to our riverside oasis.

Birthday Dinner

I have had my birthday dinner with family here a few times. Lovely views of the river (and ducks!!), really great food, if a bit posh. Very professional staff, lovely relaxed atmosphere considering how posh it makes me feel! Honestly I think it is very pricey, but food is well worth it. I will... read more

We tried this restaurant after a recommendation and are so glad we did. It's ideal for a special occasion but also family friendly. Not sure if it can be hired as a venue but would be great for a wedding too. Service food and ambience all excellent. My husband mentioned to the waitress as we ordered desert that it was... More

Having had a 50th birthday celebration back on 29 April 2015, they described on the menu, a rack of lamb. After a period of time, we were presented with our food, 3 lamb cutlets, is not a rack of lamb?? Having asked for a manger, was approached by a young lady, who said she was a manager. Whom proceeded to... More

We decided to go to the Whistling Duck for lunch on the bank holiday recently. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly chap and had our choice of tables. The wine list was extensive and settled on a Pinot Grigio in the end. He had the livers for starters followed by the lamb shank. For my lunch I... More

Food is below par service is amateur does not live up to reviews. Sweet chilli prawns whilst had flavour was such a small portion. Asked for basket of bread that took 15 mins too arrive they bought two baskets and charged for them. Rack of lamb was nothing more than three tiny cutlets herb encrusted and mostly fat. First visit to this restaurant on a Saturday - a good first impression gave way to a very noisy environment (combination of people talking rather than loud music) We arrived at 8pm to be told certain menu items were not available (poor management) - starters poor, avoid the mushrooms, an absolute joke - main courses also overpriced and under seasoned... Lovely evening, the true Brits wouldn't complain! The venue has most things you need for a good night out, good food, good booze, but the service is a little hit or miss. Its a large restaurant and therefore can lose a little atmosphere or cosiness! From the outside looking in, I didn't know whether I was visiting a Garden Centre... More

Have eaten here before and will definitely come again. Everything was cooked perfectly (as usual) and the new menu was good. I love the crepe Suzette cooked at the table. It was not warm enough to sit outside by the river on this visit but is lovely on a summer evening. The service is very good....the maitre d is excellent... More
