We had been to a concert in the Cathedral finishing at the same time as last orders at this hotel - no problem, we ordered by phone a few hours in advance, then on arrival, we were treated to great food, wine and service at this very atmospheric old pub. We all had Duck which was sensational then a particularly... More

We dropped in for refreshing ale and decided to have a bite to eat while we were there - food excellent and good value. Friendly staff and good service. Relaxed atmosphere. Lots of interesting things to read and look at on walls and ceiling.

We have booked lunch here as a couple and with a group and have 'dropped in' for a quick lunch. On each occasion, whether in the bar or restaurant, the food, atmosphere and service have always been first class. I would thoroughly recommend a visit....and such a lovely setting in this historic city.

We visited for drinks and it is definitely worth it as the place itself is full of memorabilia, along with a good selection of real ale. We went for the Goodens Gold which tasted good. The pub is in a quiet side street and the two curved corner doors are quite unique. There was a real log fire too which... More

The Tourist Information Office suggested we might want to visit this famous pub and we certainly weren't disappointed. The atmosphere and decor in the pub is outstanding. It just a place you want to spend time in. The drinks were very good (the best pint of London Pride i have had for a while). We also had lunch which again... More

If you like friendly and people chatting to strangers visit here. Very friendly, great fires in winter, always a warm welcome.

A deservedly popular pub with a good restaurant, perfect for autumn / winter lunch. Actually went in August, but the weather had turned so this seemed (and was) appropriate. Lovely, mismatched chairs and tables, excellent, friendly service and delicious food. Not huge helpings, but all very well presented. They have sensibly retained some simpler food options rather than getting too... More

We have just returned from a two night stay and felt compelled to write a review despite doing one previously as I'd noticed a couple of recent poor reviews. We ate there Friday night and Sunday lunch. The menu was full of good choices with lots of locally sourced options and in season produce. The portions were good and the... More

This is a genuine old pub in the heart of an ancient city, with wonderful ambience, history, and fantastic food. It's restaurant prices but well worth it. Alternatively in true English style you can have a sausage and a pint at the bar! It's even worth a day trip from London.

Sunday bank holiday brought a busyish restaurant but not too noisy. The menu was pleasantly straightforward with a few nice twists and a good mix of gastropub comfort food (beer battered fish and chips, luxury burger) with more inventive items (duck with butternut squash and grapefruit, scallops with cauliflower puree). The four of us enjoyed three courses each with a... More
