I said it in my last review and I will say it again, the service lets this place down! This weekend we visited for lunch on Saturday and dinner on Sunday and we do love the pub, the menu is great, the food well priced...but the service leaves us so frustrated we have reached the point of wondering where else... Placed on the edge of the Southampton Common, The Cowherds offers excellent food in nice settings. Beer and food are excellent. Families are welcome.

This week I visited this watering hole on the edge of the Southampton Common where everyone and their dog passes by and had to sit outside with my dog for a drink as they don't allow dogs inside which is their prerogative of course. However they have an unimpressive outdoor seating area with picnic benches only, so having a meal... More

The food was OK but the service was very slow..... It seemed to take an age to get the condiments to go with your meal. The children's food portions seemed a bit on the small side.

The Cowherds has recently been decorated and it seems larger. Two of us went for lunch on Wednesday. We didnt book. Wednesday is pie day! There were 6 pies on offer with choice of potatoes and sides. I had Fish Pie, my friend a Veggie had the Cheese and potato Pie. She thought it was great.. I had sweet potato... More

We were looking for somewhere to get a decent lunch before embarking on a ship, so time was of the essence. When we arrived the carpark was almost full so we were a little concerned about waiting times, but inside, the place wasn't crowded and it was a very nice environment to rest for a while. We only ordered bar... More

Always difficult to find a decent pub lunch in Southampton - there seems to be nothing in between a full restaurant and the horrible food court at West Quay, so it is worth getting out of the city and going up the Avenue. The Cowherds is a nice pub, and our food was tasty - we had roast beef sandwich,... More

First visit (early evening) with four of us was really good, even though one of the group had to wait a short while longer for their main course. The waitress was very friendly and very helpful which helped. Second visit (late afternoon) with just two of us was a let-down all-round. However, the third visit (late afternoon again with just... I am disappointed again with the Cowherds, food has improved, surroundings are great but the tables were not clean, nor were the ladies toilets. Along time to get served even though fairly quiet, no attention to detail as far as the customers are concerned.

we initially stumbled on this as the hotel we were staying at didn't provide an evening meal and having the family dog with us we needed somewhere to eat outside luckily it was a warm weekend The pub was packed as we had expected due to the nice weather and its fabulous location next the huge common but we were...
