Jolly Sportsman - best pub/restaurant for miles around

Have visited many times, & never let down - slow service went through a bad patch, but has now fully recovered. Tip - For the very best food, ask if Bruce (himself) will be at the stoves

Friendly helpful staff who set the tone when you phone to book and carry it through when you arrive. We haven't been for some time and wondered whether it would be as good as we remembered. In fact it was better. Lovely pub with a wonderful garden and they seem to pull off the impossible- an excellent restaurant but yet... More

We've been to the JS on many occasions, with friends; with family, with puppy! The staff are excellent, the service relaxed yet efficient. We've never had a disappointing meal, spring or summer; lunch or dinner. If I had to choose, I would say that summer lunches are just sublime with a drink or two in the garden. But the interior... Despite our being amongst the last to sit down for lunch today, as usual everything was faultless - from welcome, to service, the general relaxed ambience, to the unbelievable quality of the food and presentation. The restaurant was absolutely packed with Father's Day diners and one very large group who were celebrating a birthday. The chefs' creativity and the quality... More

Just stunning. The gardens are absolutely beautiful, the interior is really special. The food is quite expensive for us, but utterly worth it. We had pork belly (the crackling was perfect) and guinea fowl (crispy skin was just gorgeous). Posh country pub exactly as it should be. I highly recommend.

Genuinely gastro and genuinely pub (real ales, bar snacks). Great choice of wines by glass and bottle. Large well kept garden with outdoor tables, dog friendly. Large outdoor play structure for small children. Friendly staff, not always on the ball.

Been for lunch twice recently (after a break of a couple of years) and both times had the set price two course meal at £14.95. This is good value. Ordering a la carte is more expensive but the food is really good. Lovely bread and butter to eat while waiting for the meal (no extra charge - score a point).... More

This was always my favourite country pub when I lived in Brighton, always had great food here and have lovely memories of the place. Last Saturday, I went to a wedding here and it was a delight: champagne in a beautiful garden with glorious surrounding scenery, followed by a delicious buffet in the pub. The staff were polite, attentive and... More

Great lunch yesterday - well designed menu with plenty of nice touches and range of flavours. Not cheap, but in the range you'd expect for this quality of cooking. The place itself is more restaurant than pub, but is well designed, interesting and has a splendid garden. Service was friendly and efficient. This place is now on our favourite list.

You'll need a satnav but it's worth the drive. Lunch for two on a weekday in a dining room best described as 'eclectic' - you can eat in the dark of an ancient room or in the light of a newish extension (or outside if it's fine). An interesting fixed lunch menu but we spotted the fish soup on the... More
