Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

Everything seemed pre-prepared and just covered with sickly sweet sauce. The only exception was the duck. In fairness the waiter did deduct one meal from the bill, but will not go back.

We made another visit to Gars as we feel it offers the best Chinese food in Brighton. My only criticism is that in this occasion our food was served within 10 minutes of us ordering (this may benefit some) so we felt a little rushed. However, we didn't rush and took our time chatting and we weren't rushed out so... More

Just back from a fantastic meal here. We were heading to another restaurant but this caught our eye on the way and so decided to see if they could fit us in and I'm so glad we did! Contemporary, stylish surroundings and the service was attentive but not suffocating. The staff were friendly, happy and so very helpful. Our starter... More

Have been to garrs a few times and never been that impressed. The prawn toast is the best I've ever had but the menu is a bit limited and flavour not quite there wi th other dishes such as salt and pepper squid and pork dumplings. Best night I've had here was a friends birthday where 40 of us did... More

From start to finish this was an excellent lunch, served with a smile and nothing was too much bother even though the restaurant was very busy. We went a la carte but i did notice an excellent 2-course set lunch for £10.00 with which you also got a choice of rice or noodles and a large plate of pak choi... More

We have been holidaying in Brighton every year for the last 5 years. We always pay a visit to Gars and always look forward to it. The service is prompt and the food exceptional. Last week we ate here as a family of 7 and a baby. The upstairs restaurant is much nicer than downstairs. The Hors D'oeuvres are consistently... More

I am surprised how few reviews there are for this well established higher end Chinese restaurant, my understanding is that it's been on site for some 20 years, but maybe I am mistaken? Regardless, to my review- For me a Thursday night with work friends we originally booked for 10 but were sadly only 8, on arrival we were asked... More

We booked a table on a busy Saturday night, for our Anniversary dinner. We have been going to this restaurant for many years, but this is the first time after its recent refurbishment. They have obviously spent a lot on the refurb, and it has been done in a contemporary way, they have a guided tour on their website if... More

Good authentic Chinese food, portion sizes fairly big so don't over order as I made this mistake and ended up leaving quite a lot.

We really enjoyed our meal at Gars. Food was fantastic, wine was good and service impeccable. Hasn't changed a bit since we lived here 20 years ago - amazing to keep such a high standard for so long
