A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

This place is way overpriced for what you get. The food was nice enough but verging on bland. The service was good but I thought it was a bit sneaky to add on a service charge for a party of 2 people. I also left feeling hungry which is never a good sign. I could go to my local Chinese... More

I would advise you to avoid this place at every opportunity unless you have the mannerisms of a recluse. We were unwelcomed by all staff and present customers all because we had a child of five years old with us. The owners faces looked as if they wanted us to leave. I've eaten in many fancy restaurants and they have... More

I unfortunately recommended Gars to my very dear friends below Dick Charter & his lovely wife for a Valentines treat. I won't be recommending them again.

I cant understand why gars has any bad reviews i think some people are just so eager to pick up on the most minor of faults so they can spend the following afternoon sifting through a thesaurus concocting a pithy critique. Any bad reviews are just simply absolute rubbish! in the past 4 years i have visited the restaurant over... More

A long standing visitor I just love Gars the food is delightful super choice friendly service. Drop in for a quick lunchtime snack or a more leisurely dinner it always inviting. Great choices super platters to start a wide variety of main courses snd great crispy duck. A tad pricey but always worth it.

Having just moved to Brighton (11 months ago) from London, I am seeking some decent Chinese and Indian (and indeed any ethnic ) restaurants. I was recommended this restaurant after 11 months of frustration and tried it out today. Th say I was extremely disappointed is an understatement. First impressions are OK , this restaurant being situated in The Lanes,... More

My friend and I decided to try this resturant, with regret! The atmosphere was a bit silent and awkward when we walked in, which we thought was odd. Also we had the rudest waitress. We ordered two starters and 4 dishes for the main course to share. While we were still ordering, the waitress rudely closed her book and walked... More

Our starters were great. Soft shell crab and squid, very freah. Mains were clearly just microwaved. Tough, dry duck and gloppy sauce with prawns, sweet n sour which was not what we ordered. Not a vegetable to be seen either! Had better takeaways. Pricey too. We even had a tastecard and got £20 off but still overpriced for poor quality... More
