Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been...
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

My Birthday

I chose to spend my birthday here but was a little disappointed. While the food was to a good standard. The service left a lot to be desired. The server we had didn't seem to know the menu very well and lacked the character needed from a waiter/waitress. Also the portions were rather small and... read more

The small portion of dishes doesn't warrant that kind of price. Service so so. Along Preston Street of Brighton, you could go for China Garden, China China, or Good Friends for good portion, good taste and a fragment what you would pay in Gars.

We came here in a group of friends and the service was really shoddy. Some of our dishes failed to arrive and when we chased the up we weren't apologised to, in fact they acted as if we were bothering them by asking for the dishes that they had obviously forgotten to make! Worst thing, when we finished our meal... More

We have been to this restaurant on a couple of occasions, both of which were very good. Our last visit did not live up to our previous experience. The waitress who looked after us was fine, pleasant and helpful, but the waiter who took our order was uninterested and distracted and made mistakes with our food order, which we had... More

We decided to eat here after looking at the reviews on Trip Advisor. If I'm honest I am a little disappointed in our experience. We had pre booked but when we arrived they couldn't find our booking straight away. When they eventually did we were taken upstairs and gad a table right next to the door to the toilets! There... I have eaten here several times in the last few years and it is always enjoyable. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only downside is the ridiculous journey to the toilets, which feel as if they are in the roof!

I've been going here for years and the food is always excellent. It is definitely the best Chinese I've ever had! They have also now got a lunch time Dim Sum menu which is amazing!

We visited here whilst down in Brighton for my birthday. It was about 10pm on bank holiday Sunday but the restaurant was very quite. The food was simply stunning - salt & chilli chicken and salt & chilli Seabass were stunning starters. Main courses were also good. Service was ok, the staff didn't check if everything was ok with any... More

Went here for anniversary meal, didn't look to good from the outside (full of scaffolding) but decor inside is pleasant enough. Menus are a little tatty and old, but rather than the norm 200 dish Chinese they do a smaller amount of dishes but do them very well. Tempura batter dishes were lovely, specially monkfish ones. One of the top... More

Saw this place earlier in the day whilst walking around Brighton which was lucky as the front of the building was covered in scaffolding, looked in and it was clean and tidy with a good menu. Arrived about 8.15pm was pointed to a table and given menus, asked for a wine list which was actually on the table, think the... More
