Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

We have been going to Gars for over ten years! Not only is their food the best Chinese we have experienced.... but their service is unbeatable! We left a bag in there a week ago with our nephews Xmas present in.... realised tonight.... phoned them.... and they had not only found it and kept it safe for us, but they... More

Reasonable food and good service. Found it a bit overpriced but you are probably paying for its central location. Found the menu quite small compared to other Chinese restaurants I have been too. However I would go there again.

My partner and I visited Gars on the recommendation of a friend. We had the mixed hors d'ouvres to start - prawn toast (very nice), spare ribs (over sweet), vegetable tempura (very greasy) and quick fried chicken. The chicken was really bad; dry, overcooked, tasteless; pretty much like poorly cooked chicken nuggets. The main courses weren't much better - kung... More

Won Tun Soup, grilled pork dumplings, barbecue ribs, satay chicken, fillet beef in black bean soy and noodles. All as a take away and all very good indeed. It's fair to say that take away food does not necessarily reflect the restaurant but this food was very good indeed . Very little sweetness and not greasy. One of my favourites,... More

OK, its a bit on the pricey side but we've eaten a lot of Chinese food all around the world and this does rank pretty high up in terns of quality of food. excellent flavours and an interesting and varied menu really sets its above the outdated Chinese restaurants we've had... Great food we had an amazing table. It was our wedding anniversary but they didn't know that. We choose the emperor banquet and it was great. I would definitely recommend this restaurant

The flavours in many various dishes are exquisite. The lovely atmosphere puts everyone at ease and the service is fantastic. The manager was kind enough to offer a drink to our table. Will defiantly becoming a regular customer to this establishment. All I can say is fantastic!

Ordered takeout tonight as was too exhausted to go out. Between us we had five spice bbq ribs, grilled pork dumplings, won ton soup, satay chicken, beef fillet with soy and black bean (cooked medium rare) and Singapore noodles. None of it was greasy, all was tasty and well cooked. I would definitely eat in there and would recommend.
