Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

There aren't many Chinese restaurants left in Brighton these days, and this is a shame - but Gars are doing a great job at hosting premium Chinese food in the heart of the lanes. The service is a little hit and miss, with some waiters being more attentive and friendly than others, and the prices are fairly steep (if you... More

I've been to Gars before & been impressed, however this time was not good at all. Starter arrived incredibly quickly & the barbecue sauce literally tasted like sauce from a bottle with a hint of 5 spice - I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was in fact how it is made. Everything tasted far too sugary & the... More

This is a super restaurant for lunch or dinner. We went a few times recently for lunch as their lunch menu was affordable, well chosen and fair sized portions.

We have eaten at Gars many times. The quality of food and the service never fail. Try the mixed starters - exceptional!

extremely friendly and great food with wonderful atmosphere - the food is of best quality and so reasonably priced (wine however is a tad expensive if you're on a budget)

Visited this restaurant with my family on Sunday 31st Aug. We ordered crispy duck, which was overcooked and chewy. Chicken Teryaki, which was overcooked and tasted awful. Vegetable sweet and sour hot-pot, which was tasteless and boiling hot as if reheated in a microwave. It had sweet and sour sauce dumped on the top, swimming in oil.. terrible. Fried shredded... More

Wanted to go to a nice Chinese restaurant before seeing a show, and found Gars through reviews and friends. Easy to find, friendly welcome from staff, well presented restaurant. The "buts" come from mixed feelings about the food; mixed chefs starter gave good tasting chicken and prawn toasts, the ribs were in a rather sweet sauce which was not too... More

Dropped in here with the wife and the 2 kids, got a table straight away (admittedly it was early evening 6pm). Service was attentive and accomodating, and food was served swiftly and efficiently. I wouldn't call myself a Chinese food expert but I eat out enough to know what's good, what's not and most importantly what's fresh and what's been... More

I read somewhere that this is a ".......bog standard Chinese restaurant.......". Well as long as it's good that is not such a bad thing in my mind. The restaurant is easy to get to, a short cab ride from the station - you can probably walk but I do not know Brighton. Very well presented and looks clean. The service... More

When my husband and I arrived the restaurant was very busy and we had to wait for a table. That bears well, I'm thinking - popular place. However, the window seat, squashed in the corner, overlooking the extractor fans etc did not fare well for a great eating experience. Starter (chef's choice) arrived quickly. My husband and I agreed that... More
