A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

Delicious Chinese!

Last night a friend and I ate at this restaurant. I had been before a couple of years ago for lunch. We chose the 'Chefs Feast' and both thoroughly enjoyed it. The dishes are not overly filled, but the food is very well cooked and tasty. The lamb shank fell off the bone and the super crispy... read more

Had a delicious beef in black bean sauce here. Very nice indeed. Not cheap but good quality. They lose a star for adding a service charge but still asking if you want to leave a gratuity. Watch out for that.

Went to Gars for the Dim-Sum lunch menu with a couple of colleagues for a quick midweek lunch. Enjoyed an excellent dim-sum menu with a great variety. Particularly enjoyed the fluffy char-sui buns, squid and prawn dumplings. Good service and reasonably priced. Great to have a high quality dim-sum available in Brighton (something i've been hankering for).

Expensive food but no very good quality is our experience (13th aug 2015 ) we decided having looked at the menu that we would eat here as we assumed the high price would reflect on the quality of our food but we were wrong as the food was barely hot & the quatity & quality was very poor. Having seen... More

My husband and I went to Gars earlier this year and enjoyed a great lunch so decided we would return for dinner there last Saturday evening. We booked the table for 7.30 but actually arrived fifteen minutes late so the lady who greeted us when we arrived told us off for being so late and said she they would fit... More

Went there on a Tuesday evening and it was quite busy. The food is excellent and includes lamb shank which is not something that I have had at a Chinese restaurant before. It was a bit pricey - our bill came to £150 for three people - although that did include 2 bottles of house wine.

Me and my gf went on a Thursday night and it was not busy but was not empty either. The atmosphere was good, though it did look like they had a large area for parties so I can imagine it could get quite noisy at the weekends. Service was good and prompt. Though not at one point did we get... More

As ever the food was just great if you like Chinese this is probably the best in Brighton. Not rushed but served by pleasant staff overseen by Diane. The menu is exstensive so you are sure to find something to suit your taste, the Wine List follows suit. We were just two on this mid-week earlier evening visit, but i... More

One of the best Chinese i have ever been to. Yes it may be slightly more money than your average Chinese restaurant or take-away, however if you want good quality non-greasy Chinese food it is definitely worth every penny! also they have a great downstairs room which is available to hire for occasions such as birthdays or party's where you...
