Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been...
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

Good Food Rushed Service

Saw this place earlier in the day whilst walking around Brighton which was lucky as the front of the building was covered in scaffolding, looked in and it was clean and tidy with a good menu. Arrived about 8.15pm was pointed to a table and given menus, asked for a wine list which was actually on... read more

Went here for anniversary meal, didn't look to good from the outside (full of scaffolding) but decor inside is pleasant enough. Menus are a little tatty and old, but rather than the norm 200 dish Chinese they do a smaller amount of dishes but do them very well. Tempura batter dishes were lovely, specially monkfish ones. One of the top... More

Great food, fast and efficent service. The downside is having to check your bill in detail evetytime you visit. Last week wasnt the first time we had drinks added to our bill that we hadnt ordered or drunk. On highlighting we hadnt had 3 glasses of wine you would have thought they would have rechecked the whole bill but no... More

I was in Brighton with my other half and our 4 kids. We had such an amazing lunch. The food is of top quality and the price is not silly. I would not use any other Chinese in Brighton as a result of this visit!

We tried the new dim-sum menu and it was the best Chinese food we have ever had. There were four of us, one vegetarian who was exceptionally well catered for. Highlights included the tofu and cashew nuts on rice, gyoza and spring rolls. The staff were very friendly and there was a lovely atmosphere. We will definitely be going again.

We held a special Birthday party at Gars last weekend. We were a bit apprehensive when we approached as the venue is currently decked in scaffolding. We had booked the downstairs room and it was more than enough for the twelve of us. We were welcomed by Gar himself who made it clear he wanted us to have a great... More
