A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

The best Chinese restaurant in Brighton

Gars is widely recognised as one of the best, if not the best Chinese restaurants in Brighton, The food has never yet disappointed and the service has always been great. I have a intolerance to MSG and the manager always advises on what is "safe" for me and what is not. A great place to eat.

We held a special Birthday party at Gars last weekend. We were a bit apprehensive when we approached as the venue is currently decked in scaffolding. We had booked the downstairs room and it was more than enough for the twelve of us. We were welcomed by Gar himself who made it clear he wanted us to have a great... More

I visited Gars at lunchtime with a group of friends. We had dim sum- a selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes (vegetarians are particularly well catered for at Gars which surprised me as often Chinese food is very meaty). The food was delicious and the waiting staff were very attentive. Price is very reasonable for such high quality authentic... More

Really nice place, would recommend to anyone looking for delicious chinese food and a great night. The tofu in yellow bean sauce was particularly tasty, especially if youre veggie!

Probably the best Chinese food in Brighton, good service and relaxed atmosphere. Soft shell crab was fantastic!

First time visit for a few years. Must say warm welcome and attentive. Service good, pretty good drinks menu. The only downfall is that the set menu food, £27.50 a head, was not value for money. Staff appeared over keen to clear table & after a visit to the toilet, my drink had been cleared. Would I go again?

Came here tonight, on recommendation. Very glad we did. The service, decor & food is superb. Care and attention to detail on service and food is evident. We will return, definitely. Bemused by ott negative comments. We were asked how our meal was twice , so we had chance to tell the team how fantastic it was. So we are... More
