Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been...
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

I love this place, but hate the hen do's

We go here as a regular treat, it's expensive but worth it. Saturday accommodation of hen do's in the basement, with pumping awful music, isn't fair on everyone else dining and paying these prices. Don't be greedy, Gars, and maintain standards. It's a shame to cash in on the hen do opportunity to... read more

Me and my gf went on a Thursday night and it was not busy but was not empty either. The atmosphere was good, though it did look like they had a large area for parties so I can imagine it could get quite noisy at the weekends. Service was good and prompt. Though not at one point did we get... More

As ever the food was just great if you like Chinese this is probably the best in Brighton. Not rushed but served by pleasant staff overseen by Diane. The menu is exstensive so you are sure to find something to suit your taste, the Wine List follows suit. We were just two on this mid-week earlier evening visit, but i... More

One of the best Chinese i have ever been to. Yes it may be slightly more money than your average Chinese restaurant or take-away, however if you want good quality non-greasy Chinese food it is definitely worth every penny! also they have a great downstairs room which is available to hire for occasions such as birthdays or party's where you... Went in on a quiet night and was forced to pay service charge. I refused as it should be discretionary. The manager ( if she was , she shouldn't be as she had no customer service skills ), was utterly rude and frankly , would rather go anywhere else but this place.. AVOID!!!

Great food, we live out of town and travel with a hot bag to get a takeaway thats how much we love it! Always fresh and tasty. It is slightly pricy which is the only downer as we don't have as often as would like! It is the only chinese restaurant we eat in at locally. Service is ok. The... More

The food took a while to arrive, we were not disappointed when it did. All our party enjoyed their meals and the sides we shared were tasty and freshly made. The staff were attentive and helpful. We asked for a round table to accommodate our party of 7 and were not disappointed. I also needed to move the booking on... More

We chose Gars Restaurant to celebrate my husband's Birthday. We haven't been there for a while but we had a very pleasant surprise. We chose the Imperial Platter to share as a starter...it was really delicious and so beautifully presented...the squid was cooked to perfection. We followed this was the crispy duck and pancakes. Quite often the number of pancakes... More
