Description: Tucked away amongst Brighton's famous laneways on Market Street is Il Bistro, a charming restaurant set in an old fisherman's cottage only moments from the sea. Specialising in Mediterranean fare and fresh fish, Il Bistro first opened its doors back in 1975 and has been a hit with local foodies ever since. The dining room – with whitewashed walls, beamed ceilings and potted plants – is popular for business lunches and family get-togethers, and Il Bistro offers pre-theatre meals as well as a down-to-earth a la carte menu featuring classics such as Gambas a la Pil Pil – king prawns cooked in garlic, olive oil and chilli; and the Aubergine al Forno – baked layers of fresh aubergine filled with mozzarella, Parmesan and tomatoes.

We hadn't booked, and hadn't looked at Trip Advisor, so took pot luck. We saw this restaurant in The Lanes and decided that it offered a good set price lunch menu. It was all ok, but nothing memorable. It does what it says on the tin.

What a good choice! 2 courses for £10 plus you can buy extras if you like. (Garlic bread recommended, very nice). The minute steak was perfectly cooked, the chips excellent and the salad very fresh, it didn't look a huge amount of food but we were full for hours afterwards. We had one starter and one dessert (profiteroles :-), all... More

A quaint little bistro with a nice two courses for £10. Had pate for starters and fish and chips for mains. Neither were amazing but weren't bad either.

We found the food tasty and very good value if you choose from the set menu - the 2 courses for 10 pounds has quite a good range. Only one veg dish - my daughter had the veg lasagne and said it was probably the best she'd had in a restaurant. Portions aren't huge but for us were ok. Our... More

Three of us had lunch here and used their £10 menu. We all had different things from the menu and were all very pleasantly surprised by the food, which was excellent. Visit the loo upstairs while you are there !! The building was built in the 18th Century during the reign of King George 1st. Fascinating

This place looks quite nice from the outside and is in a lovely part of town. Once inside and seated though you'll find the place is soulless, the staff aren't very friendly and the food is just ok. I had a cooked breakfast and asked for a poached egg, I was promptly told they don't do them, all you need... More

Came across this place while wandering around the lanes during the day so went back in the eve to try out the 2 courses for £10 menu. Excellent service, excellent food, good portion sizes.

Pate and my carbanora was delicious-muscadet not chilled properly. Service not bad-but slow. Ambience was good. Waiter nneded to wake up a bit and do his job rather than messing about with his friend at the back. Would I come again? NO.

Food is microwaved, veg has a microwaved cheese sauce driZzled over it. Ice cream is three scoops of cheap supermarket crap. Building looks like it's going to fall apart and staff look unhygienic and unhappy. Embarrassing and shameful experience, no wonder they are shut throughout the middle of every day..

Thank you for you review Daniel.Just to inform you our food is brought in fresh daily and cooked to order with using our ovens and grill only, never using a microwave in any instance. We actually dont make a cheese sauce to put over veg, only a fresh home made tomato sauce which cannot be mistaken for cheese. Our Ice... More
