Wet and windy winter day

Visited the castle on a typically English winter day. Cafe was warm and comfortable with wifi. Nice selection of food and drink on offer, the Croque madame was superb. Friendly with good personal service in an out of the way location, the food was fresh and well prepared.

Wonderful Sunday lunch in very atmospheric setting. The log burner and excellent staff provided a very warm welcome. The food was amazing - just like home cooking. It was roast pork this Sunday and it came complete with all the trimmings and especially crispy roasties. The Apple Tarte Tatin with Earl Grey ice cream was a perfect ending to the... More

It's unusual to come across a place like this at the entrance to an English Heritage site in the middle of a wood but the beautiful setting is not the only reason to come here. Do not be put off by the outside "shacky" appearance because inside you will be warmly welcomed by both the friendly staff and a wood... More

We were in a party of eight friends on a Saturday night. It was like having our own secret dining room in the woods. Located next to Berry Pomeroy castle the shack or Berry castle cafe as it is described will give you no idea of what is in store. It is a unique dining experience. The title Cafe does... More

Three of us popped in for a light lunch having had the cafe recommended to us. The smell of wood smoke as we approached and a fabulous log fire was welcome on a cold damp November day. Excellent choices on the menu and my fish soup was excellent and of course came with all the accompaniments one expects in France.... More

My elderly mother treated myself and my husband to a coffee and a pot of tea for two in the cafe at the castle. I did not find out until later, that she was charged £12. Really cross, will not be returning!

A pot of tea for two and a coffee costs £4.70. This is an obvious and regrettable mistake on our part and we apologise. If you wish - you are welcome to pop in to the cafe again. We will refund you in full and offer you a free treat. Apologies again from the team. More

It would have been 5 but my order got messed up by the chef, a bit, on reflection I should have had the soup as that look, and smelt, great but plumped for the burger, which being supplied with home made relish did not suit my tastes. My wife had the cream tea which was very good. Service was friendly... More

We visited on Sunday and had marvelous roast lamb with all the trimmings and divine chocolate tart for pudding. The staff were helpful and polite and the whole experience was excellent. The atmosphere in the cafe was lovely with the wood burner lit and the friendly staff. I think I shall be popping in again soon for a cream tea,... More

What a fabulous find... Right next to Berry Pomeroy Castle, the "cafe" is nestled in the woods. Outstanding chef Philipe conjures up some wonderful dishes, we had a magnificent Croque Madam and the best watercress soup I've ever eaten. Lovely hospitality as well as excellent food. Well worth popping in, follow the signs for the Castle and you can't miss... More

Booked for a table of four on Sunday, the wood burner was glowing and the atmosphere was truly amazing. The staff were happy and helpful and catered to our every need. The roast beef arrived, home cooked Yorkshire puddings the size of the plate, vegetables cooked to perfection. The chocolate pudding was to die for, looking forward to next Sunday...... More
