Description: Grandad Nicols is now open and serving the residents and guest of torquay with freshly cooked " old fashioned fish and chips" the traditional way. We serve only the highest graded fish from the clean waters of iceland and local specials from brixham fish market, and home made specials like Haddock & Parsly fish cakes and our famous yorkshire fish cakes. Due to a number of people thinking we have stale or old oil we have made the decision to change the type of oil we fry in we used to use beef dripping but we have had some comments saying that the oil was stale old etc. So we have now change to vegetable oil which is more commonly found in the fish and chip shops and most people are accustomed to

Having just moved to Torquay this is the 2nd time I have ordered fish 'n' chips from Granddad Nichols. The fish was a good portion and was tasty, flaky and moist, like fresh fish should be, in a light crisp batter. The chips a good colour and portion, probably not as crisp as I would prefer but palatable nonetheless. Excellent... More

We stumbled upon this chippy while looking for dinner. The menu is varied and imaginative for such a Benue. Fish and chip sandwich, potato fritters and battered chips to name a few offerings. Great value offers, children eat free offers, buy one pizza get one free. You can easily feed a family of four for under £15 and be full.... More

Great 2nd visit Lovely friendly polite staff All the food was fresh to order you may have to wait slightly longer but that's fine for fresh food rather than it all be sitting under the lights going soggy . Portion size very good for the price . I pay so much more for fish and chips back in my home... More

Chips were ok but the haddock was a big disappointment. Despite being lightly battered, there was very little actual fish in evidence and was not very white. Would not return.

The cooking fat was stale and needed changing. It made the chips horrid and greasy and the fish was inedible, even the seagulls didn't want to know. Staff were indifferent. Shame as there aren't many good chippies around this part of Torquay so a bit more effort would go a long way.

Being on holiday,I'd done some research on fish and chips take a ways and thought we'd try this one after reading the reviews. Fish nice and fresh, peas nice but chips let it down, very bitty, fatty, and I think we got the bits from bottom of the fryer. Disappointed

We ordered through just eat and were told by the website to expect our food in 45 minutes at 8pm a reasonable hour to eat dinner. But it then changed to 9pm. I rang to enquire as to why this was and was greeted by a fairly rude man who offered no apology or whatsoever. I know take always can... More
