Looking at reviews on booking com, 3* is about right. First, you need independent travel arrangements as busses and trains won't serve this place or area. What they got right was a clean, comfortable warm (as we went in January) and spacious room. The building...looks ancient, old worldy fitting in with what ever it means to be Cornwall in age - loved it. We had bath as opposed to shower, bathroom was massive offering plenty of space and light. Complimentary tea coffee and bottled water replenished ever day. The location is somewhat isolated, plenty of parking set amongst beautiful natural surroundings including a brook. Food gorgeous and delicious what was served to us. Breakfast and evening meals, especially Thursday steak night. Nice to see locals using the establishment. What we think they could improve was WiFi dropping out regularly or just not working in room 1. All times of the day. When we approached staff, there appeared to be little empathy or anything they could do as they talked about how WiFi works on their device. We were left exposed. But no biggy as WiFi isn't essential to us, but it left some communication difficulties unless you were in communal areas. Also, we were one of the last guests to use the rooms (we were reminded of this more than three times!) some of the menu was restricted. We are 2 out of 3 nights (to lend support to local businesses) so for instance: the dessert choices on our last night was ice cream or cheese! On breakfast we were offered anything cold, but the day before it had all been placed out to help yourself. No yoghurt because there hadn't been a delivery, no real empathy given just that's the way it is. I think we were victims of the winding down season, but if we had been informed beforehand, we would have made different plans. We did on our last day by withholding breakfast, it was convenient as we had lunch appointment at home... So we can't really give it much more than a 3* rating even though staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Not a place to stay for disabled or hard of walking, too many stairs to navigate....but if just for drinks/meals, then I thoroughly recommend...More
