Location stunning, food underwhelming

The restaurant has an unrivalled location and a stunning restaurant - the food however is hit and miss, which is a real shame.

Severely disappointed in our experience here at idle rocks today, expecting a fun atmosphere in such a pleasant setting we where horrified by the treatment we received. We came in for lunchtime cocktails and where made to feel so extremely unwelcome by the staff and owner, we were forced to leave. After overhearing the bar staff being questioned on how... More

.....to quote the overtanned antiques dealer! Yes you can take a deep breath and have fish and chips for only £7.50 at The Idle Rocks at the moment. {June 2012] The fish was very nicely cooked and the tartar sauce was home-made. The atmosphere in the dining room is a bit stuffy but if you ignore the blazers, club ties... More

Me and partner did not stay at this hotel but popped in last night for dinner. Considering other reviews have stated the food was ghastly we were initially a little worried on arrival but how can such ghastly food achieve TWO rosettes??? The food was indeed absolutely fabulous! And we were pleasantly surprised to receive an amuse bouche ( a... More

We booked this restaurant for a special romantic birthday lunch. From the disappointing lunch menu we both chose tapas with fish since we had eaten good fish tapas elsewhere that week. The squid and octopus had no dressing or any sign that it had been treated in any way once defrosted. They stank so badly (we couldn't work out of... More

Went to this restaurant on a lovely sunny day and sat out on the terrace. One of the only things going for this restaurant has going for itself is the setting! The lunch menu was limited with only about 10 dishes and a selection of sandwiches. The Potted crab was £10 and when it arrived was the size of a... More

I went to the Water's Edge restaurant in late August for my anniversary and although not quite what I expected, I'd definitely visit it again. Starting with the food, the Water's Edge is definitely aiming itself at the top end of the market. Exquisitely presented, interestingly combined, extremely rich food, all served in smaller portions. Several ‘in-between’ courses (amuse bouche’s,... More

It's rare me to forgive an average overpriced meal, but a crab sandwich & a shared bottle of sauvignon, on a sunny terrace, with a harbour view to die for, just begs forgiveness .. . . so I'd do it again.
