Visited for the first time without knowing anything about this place. We both ordered burgers - one chicken, pulled pork and bacon the other the bourbon beef brisket with bacon and cheese. Very evocative frontage just inside the old walls. Inside, it is a proper old pub with good ale and decent food. I read somewhere that John Lennon's grandmother was born there, which is probably not the most important event in six hundred years of history, but amused me.

Half a dozen hands pumps and 11 others give a good range of draught drinks. I had three 1/3 pint glasses of the ales as a taster then drank one of the ciders :-) Didn't eat, but the menu is quite wide ranging from soup to corned beef hash, pies, fish and burgers.

Was impressed with the first visit. Food was loverly and a good price. Only downfall was a member of staff who really didn't seem as she wanted to be there. Not very enthusiastic. Wouldn't put me off going again.

This pub is like walking back in time as I understand this is one of the oldest pups in Chester. Located under part of the walls and a very short walk to the river Dee and weir. Its a traditional pub offering a good choice of beers and home cooked food. despite being very buzzy, the staff were very attentive... More

While enjoying a short break in the countryside, my partner and I didn't know where to eat in town and just fancied some nice pub grub, so went into the first pub we liked the look of. A nice warm and welcoming atmosphere, a good choice of drinks on the bar & a polite n friendly barmaid. We quickly found... More

Good beer, good service and good ambiance... All you could want from a pub. Built in the 1600's, a nice place for a beer and close to the river.

A fine piece of Chester heritage with service and a welcome to match. Excellent staff,a terrific range of beers, all very well kept, as good as any CAMRA member could ask for. The food is of a standard you should expect from any good pub. The manager really knows the business inside out and has organised a knowledgeable and very friendly... More
