Surprisingly poor

We love trying out new places and after having Clowns recommended, we had to try it. Oh how disappointing! The place is quite dark and dingy inside, but it smelled nice so we didn't back out slowly hoping nobody had noticed us. In hindsight I wish we did. I believe in supporting independent cafes, I really do, and hate to write negatively about one that has become a bit of a local treasure in Cambridge. I visited at around 11.45 on a Saturday morning, the place was pretty empty. Inside is scruffy and sticky and the loos are unpleasant, although the effect was exacerbated by a toddler sitting... I started going to Clowns years ago, it was great then. For a few years I missed out on the delicious food and great service. Then recently went back. It's still GREAT! Service with a smile, great food, great atmosphere and above all the tastiest freshly made lasagne I have ever eaten! This is one of Cambridge's best cafés, if... More

Nice busy Italian Cafe - resonable prices and quick service - the Beef Lasange was very meaty and tasty the cafe latte was generous - not rushed - if your looking for somewhere quiet then go elsewhere this is Italy at its best

A noisy Italian bar-style cafe. Good range of food, good value. Have to queue and wait at busy times but it's worth it. The platter of parma ham, mozarella and tomato was the tastiest I have ever had and extremely generous - converted me to a mozarella fan.

Clowns is the best cafe and restaurant in Cambridge. The Clowns family are the only people in Cambridge who know what real coffee is. They make amazing pasta (try the Gnocchi Sorentina, and a tiramisu for afters), their meals are inexpensive (£9 for a giant bowl of pasta and giant glass of wine, where else?) and delicious. The boss is... More

Clowns, on King Street in Cambridge, was a particularly popular haunt in my student days. A very good place to congregate with friends and chat until midnight (although it later changed to a 10pm closing time). The food is OK but the hot chocolate with cream has always been a hit.

I have been to Clowns many times over the years and have always found the service efficient and friendly. The food is not gourmet, but it is okay and very reasonably priced.- you get what you pay for and should not expect more. One can take one's time to eat and soak up the atmosphere of a laid back place.... More

Another good spot in Cambridge, busy but always friendly. Carry your food upstairs if you need to get work done. Good for large groups.

I think it is the best cafe I have ever been to. Very friendly. Lovely full fat coffee and a very unique aura. What kind of idiot would go to a cafe called clowns if they have a phobia of clowns.
