Description: Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

we visited the pub as members of the wine unearthed tasting day. Lunch was delicious (awesome fish pie) and the service was very good too. But my favourite thing, and the reason I want to write a review, is the brilliance of piping BlackAdder into the loos so you have some amusement whilst doing whatever it is you do. I'm... More

Odered their Steak Chop which was recommended by the waiter, although quite expensive at 27.50 it was a very good large steak. Service was good and attentive, a very good meal

We had an early evening dinner on Sunday which was excellent. The food is very good indeed & the meat in particular was superb, although the roast potatoes could have been a tad crisper! The sweet potato rosti was also very strangely & overpoweringly flavoured. There is a decent wine list which is not excessively priced. The tables are well... More

This is one of the best meals I've had this year - great imaginative food with something for everyone. Loved the lamb shank - the meat simply fell off the bone - perfect cooking! Rather unusually for a Saturday night in Cambridge, we felt we had plenty of space around the table (no cramming punters in like sardines here), we... More

Visited the St John's Chop House for a post-meeting work meal in a group of about 30. We had booked in advance and the restaurant provided a suitable semi-private room for us. Unlike some restaurants, they did not ask us to select our food choices in advance and said the whole menu would be available on the night. Service was... More

Ate here for a special birthday meal. The food was outstanding, there were 5 of us and we had 4 different dishes between us. Two of us shared the half shoulder of lamb. There was barely room for dessert! Service was excellent too, friendly and attentive but not too much.

Went on Tuesday for lunch, pleasant service very average food. Had heard good things but maybe lunch isn't up to the evening offering. Would not go back, I got the impression that is was just a case of someone in the kitchen heating up stuff delivered by 3663, as pointed out by another reviewer. Sad if that's the best they... More

Dear Tony Pullen, Thank you for your review. It is of course disappointing to hear that you did not enjoy your meal. We are continually monitoring the quality of the food within the restaurant and we are, on the whole, very happy with the quality we offer. On this occasion however we obviously let you and ourselves down, and for... More

St. John chop house is the same as chop house in Kings parade and the one outside cambridge at whistleford, are same restaurant. Both of them use 3663 frozen food. For this kind of food no chef it's a bit pricy. I don't blame them using this company so is Gordon Ramsy as he said to the media: at least... More

Dear Emmahoney42, Thank you for your review. I am glad to see you enjoyed your meal and gave us a 4/5. However I do not need to clarify an error on your review. As a small independent restaurant group we try and use independent and/or local suppliers. In none of the restaurants do we use 3663 as a supplier. We... More
