Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

Good food,nice atmoshphere

We had an enjoyable night thanks to good friendly service, good food, nice atmosphere and a bonus of real ale from the barrel. The wine list was also interesting with some different offerings to the norm. Would go again and probably also try its sister establishment in Kings Parade.

We had arranged to meet up here with family on the recommendation of a friend. It was a great choice, with an interesting and diverse menu. The servings are generous and tasty. I had the duck, which was superb, and my wife had the pork shoulder which again was excellent. Others at the table had a lamb shoulder to share,... More

A major reason we went here was because a lot of the better restaurants in Cambridge are closed on a Sunday night. But I'm grateful for the encouragement. They started off well with superb service: not only did they give us very helpful pointers on the wine (as a good restaurant should), but offered to let us taste options to... More

This was a rather modest experience on a Thursday evening. We had two attempts at red wine (Merlot from a good source): on each occasion the waiter brought the bottle and unscrewed the cap at the table and poured the wine - ugh! The wine was cold and deeply tannic. I asked him to take away the wine and warm... More

We would have had a great experience had our waiter had experience and understood English. When ordering we had to point at what we wanted. We also had a question about the wine and he wanted to be helpful and said he would ask but when he came back with his answer it was clear he hadn’t understood the question.... More

It is a typical local restaurant, not fancy but nice and cosy. People friendly, kind and super good service, careful, talkative but not pushy. Meat one of the top 10 in my life worldwide (I'm 60+!). All food overall very good, including deserts (tried all!). The quality of the meat calls for an upgraded wine list (mainly "by glass"). Price... More

We had no reservations and there was a table across from the host's station. My mother and I asked if we could sit there and they replied absolutely if that was what we wanted. We started with a delicious plate of artisan bread slices and a very delicious fruity Spanish olive oil. Next we had bowls of sublime carrot corriandre... More

Our small group were lead upstairs to one of the smaller dining rooms (assuming there were more upstairs?!). Subdued lighting and pleasant atmosphere. We tucked in to some pork crackling and apple dip whilst perusing the menu which was a nice touch, probably not a first date appetiser though as you can’t really hear much over your own crunching! The... More

Attened for party evening meal the food was very good but with a restaurant full and two functions on they found it difficult to manage and it was noticable - we had pre-ordered and we still waited 1 hour for staters???? Shame as not cheap expected better. Maybe try when not having functons on. I had to leave after main... More

Dined here with my wife and grown up children on Saturday 21/3/2015. Had a thoroughly decent meal with good service. Unlike it's sister restaurant, The Chop House opposite Kings College, this feels more of a pub than a restaurant. The food was well cooked and well presented and much the same as at The Chop House. Good wines by the... More
