Description: Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

Booked a group of 7 in advance. Lots of small rooms Asked to move rooms because of a loud group having a reunion. No problem. Excellent range of good food. Good traditional ale.

Price-wise perhaps not an everyday place but if you're lookijg for something special, this is it. The service was excellent, attentive but not overly so, and the food was magnificent. The suet pudding (steak and kidney when we went) was just melt in your mouth and the venison haunch cooked to perfection, as indeed was everything else. A good and... More

We shared the lamb shoulder (£37 for 2) and the house recommended red. Spartan surroundings with good atmosphere and astonishingly good melt-in-the-mouth food! Great value and typifies the best of British food. Very much what one dreams of but so seldom finds!

We visited here on the off chance and well worth a visit. The whole premises is spotless, from attention to detail at the table, to hair spray and deodorant in the lavatories! We had the 3 course meal as we were early eve diners and it was delicious! Looking forward to returning again

We stopped in for a break at a slightly odd time, in between lunch and dinner service. Luckily they were still serving. We only had a small snack, but it was really good and the staff very nice too. Prices are a bit on the high side for what it is, but the smoked chicken salad was delicious, and their... More
