Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

Worth a visit

The menu may not be extensive. However, what arrives on the table is worth the sparse menu. The service is efficient and friendly. I would certainly return to this establishment.

This was my first experience of dining at St John's Chop House, having eaten recently at sister establishments the Cambridge Chop House (before its recent makeover) and the Tickell Arms. Pea and spinach soup was flavoursome and creamy, and the steak and ale pudding excellent fare for a rainy February night. The sirloin steak was beautifully cooked and very tasty,... More

I visited here recently as part of a dinner for a guest at the Union. The food was really good, with a range of meat, fish and vegetarian options. The steak I ordered was very juicy and cooked perfectly, the atmosphere is nice and a short walk from the centre.

Been here a couple of times and will have no hesitation going back. Have organised New Years Eve dinner with family and a birthday dinner there, as well as attending another birthday dinner. Did not dissapoint each time. Staff are friendly and have had no trouble reserving a place compared to many other places in cambridge. This is surprising as... More

Good service, nice interior, maybe a bit noisy when full. Food great, every last bit of it, good vegetarian options, nice options on beers and lagers. Perhaps a tiny bit overpriced.

Went to this restaurant during a business trip to Cambridge. The restaurant was top notch from the start. As you walk in it looks like a very tradicional, but well taken care off, British Pub with several rooms. Since I was with a big group they gave us a room upstairs to ensure our privacy and that we did not... More

Yet another great Sunday lunch here. Staff were as per usual brilliant and the food choice and quality was excellent.

Wouldn't recommend the potted venison (didn't realise it would be a cold starter, also too much sugar and jelly and not enough actual meat, wish I'd chosen the duck starter now) but the main course of chicken and dessert of sticky toffee pudding were really lovely. The wine was good as well. Helpful and friendly staff. Also nice to see... More

There are many great places to eat in Cambridge, but this is my favourite. It's a little off the beaten track but worth it. The food is gorgeous, the staff warm, friendly and very informed about their menu and wine list etc. I see another reviewer thinks the space claustrophobic- I can see why some may feel that but I... Can't believe we had never been here before, we will definitely be coming back. Lovely cosy atmosphere. Fantastic service - made to feel very welcome and waiter very knowledgable. I had the Beef Chop and my wife had the Venison... Both were delicious! We will be returning very soon...loved it!
