Description: Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

We shared the lamb shoulder (£37 for 2) and the house recommended red. Spartan surroundings with good atmosphere and astonishingly good melt-in-the-mouth food! Great value and typifies the best of British food. Very much what one dreams of but so seldom finds!

We visited here on the off chance and well worth a visit. The whole premises is spotless, from attention to detail at the table, to hair spray and deodorant in the lavatories! We had the 3 course meal as we were early eve diners and it was delicious! Looking forward to returning again

It is like The Cambridge Chop House (but Cambridge Chop House is my favority one), nice place, good food, nice steaks, you must have lunch or dinner there.

We stopped in for a break at a slightly odd time, in between lunch and dinner service. Luckily they were still serving. We only had a small snack, but it was really good and the staff very nice too. Prices are a bit on the high side for what it is, but the smoked chicken salad was delicious, and their... More

This restaurant gets full marks for its personal and friendly service, accommodating us as numbers changed through the day and keeping us happy while a suitable table was found. I thought the drinks we were offered while waiting might be on the house - but that was expecting too much. The upstairs restaurant was a lovely setting for a celebratory... More

We combined the early evening dinner with the main menu across three of us and thought all the food was very good, particularly the beef Wellington. The service was friendly and flexible -two of us were late and the waitress accommodated our requests with a smile. We will definitely return!

I was in Cambridge to met an old friend from University whom I had not seen for 54 years. He was staying at St Edmunds College and we wanted to walk to a local pub, so St John's Chop House was the obvious choice. We arrived at 11.40am and were surprised to find it shut. However, it opened at 12.00pm... More
