Description: Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

This restaurant gets full marks for its personal and friendly service, accommodating us as numbers changed through the day and keeping us happy while a suitable table was found. I thought the drinks we were offered while waiting might be on the house - but that was expecting too much. The upstairs restaurant was a lovely setting for a celebratory... More

This was for a special family birthday. The staff looked afer us very well and did not rush anything they just let us have a good time. The food was good and even though there were 16 of us with different meals all the food came out in good time and was well cooked. Thee prices were OK especially considering... More

We combined the early evening dinner with the main menu across three of us and thought all the food was very good, particularly the beef Wellington. The service was friendly and flexible -two of us were late and the waitress accommodated our requests with a smile. We will definitely return!

I was in Cambridge to met an old friend from University whom I had not seen for 54 years. He was staying at St Edmunds College and we wanted to walk to a local pub, so St John's Chop House was the obvious choice. We arrived at 11.40am and were surprised to find it shut. However, it opened at 12.00pm... More

It has a good local reputation, but they really push you to order and eat quickly! We had an early (1830) slot and were asked to order before we'd sat down. We asked for more time twice before we got settled and the food arrived very quickly - less than 5 minutes. They cleared my plate within 10 seconds of... More

On business in Cambridge; just wanted a quick meal & a glass of wine. Saw this place near the ring road. Not knowing where to try I went here after loads of walking around. Service was great; welcomed with a smile. Menu is quite expensive but worth it. The wine & sparkling water was very reasonable which balanced it out.... More

This is an unpretentious restaurant with a fairly simple and traditional menu. I took my elderly father there for lunch, and the choice of food was ideal. However, the setting is very plain, more like a pub than a restaurant - not really a place you would go for any kind of special occasion, in my view. We ordered from... More

My daughter and I ate here in the early evening so we took advantage of the early diner set menu. Everything was delicious including the bottle of wine we we were helped to choose. The service was very friendly and attentive. This is my third visit to St. John's - will be going back!

We found the staff friendly and appropriately attentive. The steaks were cooked just right, but maybe a bit pricey compared to other, similar places. Nice twist on traditional food though with a selection of game. All well presented. Would go again, but perhaps try the early bird specials. Puddings good and worth sharing as they are mostly old fashioned stodgy... More

As name of restaurant proudly proclaims, very much a meat based menu, though there is also a fish of the day - price on request. Starters, mains and deserts (for the hungry students that had them ....) were all very good, and as mentioned elsewhere, modern twists on traditional fare. Unusually for an expensive restaurant, real ale was available in... More
