Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

Protein fix

Perfect place if one would like a good fix of protein. The steak was great although they insisted I have it cooked more well done than I'd like. Stuck with my guns and glad I did, because everyone who ordered steak felt it was on the borderline of being overcooked as per their requests. The... read more

We booked a table for a Sunday lunch catch up with our ever extending family. The venue was extremely welcoming and even though there were a few of our party who were late, the staff said it wasn't a problem at all and we sat outside in the small but very nice outside area having a drink until we were... The food was ok. Nasty onion gravy over all roasts that took away any other flavours. V very slow service, waited a long time for starters and then even longer for main course to arrive. Staff ok, bit abrupt, forgot numerous items including tea and coffee for some of us. Not sure we'd go again.

My husband and I visited the Chop House on a Saturday evening after getting a lucky available booking. The menu choice was very good and it was difficult to pick a main course. We had the sharing platter to start so we could have a little bit of everything. The terrine was delicious, the cheese balls were tasty and we... More

The journey to the Chop House was not my finest hour, and that meant our party had a staggered arrival at prime time on a Friday in party season. But we were still made welcome by the relaxed yet attentive staff. The place was busy and noisy, but not intolerable. Good food. It serves unabashed meat of fine quality along... More

We've visited a number of times in the last three years, and whilst the food standard can be variable - as indicated in many other reviews, especially with regard to warm food that arrives nearly cold - the prices in the last six months have climbed. For a regular dinner, it's hard to find ANY main course below 15 quid... More

Had a lovely lunch yesterday. Great beers, amazing food, lovely wine and all matched by great service. Definitely a great place to eat - we'll look forward to going back again and again!

Visited here as a family group of eight including two children on a Saturday evening to celebrate my husband's 70th Birthday. I advise you book ahead to have a choice of times. We arrived at 6.30pm and the table was booked for another party at 8pm but we were told this fact when we booked that morning. The food was... More

We have eaten here several times and this was the first time we left disappointed with the food. Potted venison consisted of a sliver of meat in a sweet sickly sauce. Salmon Wellington served with cold broccoli and carrots (no potatoes or chips). Haunch of venison requested rare and presented well done. Rhubarb and apple crumble topping dry and the... More

We came here for our wedding anniversary dinner and the whole experience was the best we have had in Cambridge so far. The speciality is delicious meat! Service fantastic (1st class) and the food was soooooo tasty/filling/value for money. We will definately be back - maybe a yearly tradition from now on?!
