Good ale, delicious food. Excellent and friendly staff. A very good, unobtrusive, live band including a flautist and violin playing country music which reminded us of "Pride and Prejudice" village dances.

During our stay in Derbyshire we frequented this pub. It is what one would call, quintessentially English. The landlord and all the staff were very accommodating and the locals themselves were exceedingly welcoming! The food in itself was excellent and well priced. The pub is set slightly off the beaten track, in a pretty village, but this is what makes... More

We visited this pub for a Sunday evening meal on recommendation from our B&B. The landlord was very friendly and made us feel most welcome. We were impressed with the menu...there were several dishes that looked appealing and the food that we ordered was excellent. Better than your average pub meal.

After a great family walk from Wetton to Thor's cave and back we called in at the Royal Oak for a pint and something to eat. Landlord is very friendly and knows his ales. I'd recommend the Hartington IPA for a great blonde ale. They also have a gluten free menu!! Well worth a visit and a big beer garden... More

I have visited the Royal Oak three times in recent months while planning a walk along the Manifold Valley for a group of Midland ramblers and enjoyed every visit. Ian, the landlord, has always been cheerful, helpful and, thankfully, efficient. There is a great atmosphere of a genuine country pub that is fairly rare these days. The beers and ciders... More

We visited Thor's cave nearby and stopped off here on the way back due to the sign that said 'muddy boots and dogs welcome'. We had very muddy boots, clothes and hands (thanks to the scramble into the cave) and two very wet tired dogs. We were welcomed warmly by the owners and waitress, the dogs were given treats and... We stopped off at the Royal Oak Inn for a drink after having been on a walk and we were made very welcome by Ian our new favourite landlord. Having spread out the map to plan our route for the next day, Ian was very knowledgeable about the Dark Peak and recommended a route which turned out to be the... More

Mine host, Ian, gave me a warm welcome when I came in for my pre-walk pint, which turned into two.Glad to report that both ales were excellently kept. They were the very local Whim Hartington IPA and not so local Wadworth 6X. The Whim went down a treat and the Wadworth, although not to my taste, went down well nevertheless.... More

The new owners (I believe) are making a go of this place. It's very welcoming, with a good atmosphere and some decent, reasonably priced house wines. The kitchen, however, needs work. A rustic beef stew was pretty good, but outside of this there was only rather disappointing 1980s style pub fare, e.g. breaded scampi or food from the deep fat... More
